Between:
- SJW's framing this as a "White Supremacy" issue(before hearing the kid was Black, they've been reticent since).
- Alt-Right people making snarky comments re: the gorilla "dindu-nuffin"
- White nationalist expressing sympathy until hearing the kid was Black(google "harambe storefront"). Then the consensus is the gorilla should've been spared at the expense of the kid.
- Keyboard jockeys on facebook calling for the parents to be charged,
It's seems that no one gives a shit about the kid or the gorilla. And it's not just the SJW's...nearly everyone is using this incident to confirm their biases and prove that their ideological bent is "correct". That's why I don't identify as a liberal, conservative, red pill, whatever...anyone who needs an ideology to interpret and frame events and the world for them 100% of time with no room for nuance or extenuating circumstances is intellectually lazy to me and isn't someone I'd freely associate with.
As a proud member of category number 2 above, I can tell you that my objective was not to "confirm bias". I was trying to have some fun and generate a few laughs. The irony of the similarity of the joke to what Obola and all the BLM crowd did with the Trayvon Martin case (and other similar cases) is
inescapable and if you don't find that funny well, you need ta git outta here.
If you think the death of a gorilla is so grave an event that we should all hang our heads in grief and shame each other for making jokes about it, then you are buying into the "Year Zero" nihilism that LOZ so eloquently describes. Look man, this situation had a HAPPY ENDING. The kid is safe, and the crisis response team did an outstanding job of fulfilling their duty. That sniper deserves a raise and a commendation. Yes it's a sad end to the animal's life and the loss of the gorilla is certainly a huge financial loss to the zoo, but that animal's ENTIRE LIFE was sad and zoo's are cruel and unusual punishment to a big animal like that to begin with.
I once read a book called "Bravo Two Zero" (
https://www.amazon.ca/Bravo-Two-Zero-Har...0440218802) about a British special forces commando captured in Iraq in 1991 on a mission to take out SCUD missiles. He wrote that after his release and return to Britain, he could no longer go to zoo's, because the treatment of the animals disturbed him. If you really have a problem with how this gorilla's life ended, you should have MORE of a problem with how his life was going in a cruel prison.

I have three children, and I do blame the mother. I took my children to the zoo and aquarium a number of times when they were toddlers. At times they tried to do something silly, but I always was watching and caught them, for example:
Once we went to an aquarium that had a huge tank with whale sharks and manta rays. We signed up for "behind the scenes" tour where they took us into the facility that maintains the tank and feeds the animals. We were standing on a catwalk above the tank, with the huge fish swimming around beneath us. I was holding my two-year old daughter tight. Suddenly, she gets this mischievous look on her face and tries to hurl her blanket into the water. I knew she was about to do something, so I was watching and caught the blanket in mid-air. If the blanket had hit the water and been swallowed by one of the whale sharks and killed it, I fully would have expected the aquarium to bill us for the damages.
When your children are in that situation and indicate that they may do something rash, you double-down on your watchfulness. If your kid does end up screwing something up due to your inattention, you should expect to be billed. The zoo should be billing that mom for the cost of a new gorilla.
As a dad, I completely empathize with what you are saying C-Note, but there are two important factors here. You are a man and you are clearly K-selected. (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R/K_selection_theory)
The mother here was a woman who, I assume, does not enjoy the benefit of a man's presence in her parenting operations. And she's clearly r-selected. If she were K-selected, she would have jumped in after the kid. As it were, her r-selected brain just figured, "Fuck it, I can always have more kids." Those two factors have an impact such that she does not have the security awareness and assessment skills that you have as a clearly excellent father. She is not your equal as a parent is what I'm saying. As such, she cannot be expected to parent as well as you do, and shit happens, as they say. Shit happened here and the little guy got in the gorilla pen and the park sniper saved his life. LOZ is right... the reaction people are having over this event is a clear indicator at how far the cancer of Year Zero nihilism has metastasized. This story had a happy ending. The people that don't see that fact need Jesus.
