Most people have this thing where they always want to eat something that "tastes good" instead of opting for food that is filling but not exactly tasty. Nothing wrong with that feeling, except in the US, anything that tastes "good" is most likely going to be calorie-dense and rich.

Let's take Subway sandwiches, for instance, a favorite choice of the average suburban yuppie. A 6-inch turkey breast sandwich at Subway, pre-toppings and dressing, clocks in at about 250 calories. Not bad. But we all know the yuppie is going to choose to slather mayo on there, add some bacon, and American cheese. Now we're up to nearly 500 calories with over 1100 mg's of sodium. And don't forget most people get footlongs, so I'm being generous here. I didn't mean to single out Subway, just using it as an example.

Up until about 6 years ago I was basically a fat guy. At 5'10", I was just over 250 pounds. With a pretty serious lifestyle change, I slowly lost between 60 and 70 pounds.

Now that I'm far more weight conscience, I've noticed something in restaurants - massive portions of starches and carbs. There's a local gourmet burger place and the amount of french they serve is shocking. I watch the tourists devour good burgers and piles and piles of french fries. That's just one place. Every restaurant I go to has entre side portions that are massive and the patrons are happily munching away. Unlimited breadsticks?! Seriously?

Yeah, I know that it's just business. I know that KFC has to earn a few bucks. I know that restaurants need patrons. But we're killing ourselves. Diabetes is not a fucking joke. I am watching my demographic peers sweat over blood sugar levels. Fat people don't need shame necessarily. They need to talk to the medical specialists who see the direct health consequences of being overweight.

"Healthy at any weight" is a criminally bad message to send out. It's a flat out lie perpetrated by mostly fat, unhealthy women trying to get their hamsters to spin faster and force high SMV men to be attracted to them. Not gonna work, cupcake. Obese women might attract some fetish-oriented guys but those men are few and far between. The rest of us guys are still attracted to the original feminine form that includes the "discernible waist". Lady, once that waist disappears, so will the men.

Potatoes are much cheaper than...well...anything. So every restaurant will gladly jack up the prices and add a "complimentary side of french fries!" Even though it actually makes more money. After a while...you start to find which places serve side steamed vegetables/salad or which straight up don't have sides that come with it.

I love Waffle House...but holy shit. How is a meal with bacon gonna come with grits, hash browns, AND toast? WTF WF?

If more people ate better, there would be more demand for side vegetables or healthier options. Therefore - make it a point to go out of your way to support local salad or juice joints. Even if it costs a few more dollars, it goes a long way.

If the bloody medical field wasn't so ripped apart by various profit motivated interests, then everyone would know how to do things better.

Potatoes can be done in an extremely healthy way - just put them in the oven as potato wedges on the grill. No fat necessary at all - some seasoning and baked on the grill instead of the pan - you can even ditch all fat.



You can literally stuff your face with that and most people will lose weight. The difference between a healthy nutritious diet food and fast food is never as stark and clear as with potatoes.
