IWC is a great brand and is becoming one of the top luxury watch brands (they open luxurious new stores everywhere in the world, two in Paris within the last three years).

I have since three years a Big Ingenieur Mission Earth. This watch is huge Ø 46mm. For big guys only. It is definitely a gorgeous piece that mixes sobriety, modernity, class (the guilloche background is really beautiful), great presence at the wrist and obvious quality and robustness.The rubber strap is superb and adds to the modernity of the watch IMO.

Got 20% discount at the IWC store after 30 seconds of discussion. Granted, it is still expensive, but admittedly, crisis has its benefits.

The eye-catching fancy watch sends IMO the right message. It is a weapon that is very effective in FSU. It may attract attention, but personaly I find the attention attracted to be positive.

OK, do any of the watch aficionados here have any ideas on a watch brand that has fashionable watches for less than $500. I don't currently wear a watch and just rely on my cellphone, but realise this is a bit lame. From the limited amount I've seen I like A. Lange & Sohne's designs. There's an example below, but is a wee but more than $500.

Of course. Your strap MUST match with your shoes AND your belt. A stainless steel strap will match with any shoes color nonetheless.

Hah. Good guess on my part, I am getting better with this fashion stuff. I was thinking about the watch matching the belt too but when your standing your wrist is going to be pretty in line with your belt. This is ok to do?

The belt must anyway match with the shoes, so if the strap match with the shoes, it will also match with the belt (wink).

Personally, I always wear black shoes, belt, socks, watch, ect, and would not even consider to wear brown (or walnut, or chesnut, ect) optical glasses. Even glasses must match with the rest. As the gloves in winter for that matter.

The Lange & Sohne is a great looking watch. Similar to Jaeger LeCoultre, but both in Rolex and beyond price terrority.

As mentioned before, when you're dealing with anything under $2000 or so, it's more about looks than anything. You won't be buying an heirloom or a piece from an esteemed watchmaker for that price, obviously.

Look around for an affordable automatic piece, I know a few makers have entered that market lately but I can't think of the names at the moment. Otherwise everything will be quartz for that price.

Best place to buy is online like Princeton watches or second hand off of rolexforums or similar. Don't be afraid to buy second hand, there's no reason a well taken care of watch should be passed up for a retail-priced and tax included new one. There's still a preowned market for the sub $2k range, granted it's smaller. Most sellers should be reputable on a site like rolexforums, just check their references and prior transactions.

Both my parents used to spend big bucks on timepieces so I'm kind of a watch snob... Lately, I've kind of come around and have been looking at sub $1000 watches as a fun way to branch out.

Strangely enough, I wear my $3 timex just as much as my Hublot Big Bang or JLC Reverso nowadays.

I only buy watches if they are solar power and have atomic time, which limits me a lot brand wise to mostly Japanese brands like casio and seiko. A lot of people poo poo Japanese watches as being cheesy, but they make some amazing stuff for quite cheap. You have to look at the domestic japanese models though. A lot of the coolest stuff they have is only available in Japan. Japanese consumers are very picky about quality and style, much more than others, that's why the best stuff is usually only sold there. One of the coolest watches and one that is no longer made is this Japan only model that came out about 5 years ago, and was then quickly discontinued. I've hunted online for one, but can only find fake chinese versions. It has solar power, atomic time, and ion plating. Looks wicked and expensive, but was only about $400 I think.



Seiko makes some OK looking solar atomic ones but not nearly as nice as the above Casio. They also now make GPS ones.



In the end I got this one in the video below from Japan, it is all black including the reverse screen, atomic, solar, big and heavy and landed cost was about $285. I still hunt for the first watch I mentioned though. It looks very cool and is high tech yet dressy enough.

Just a general question. Is there a minimum price point on watches for someone who is upgrading their wardrobe?

If I get a $600 suit, will a $100 watch stand out and look cheap?

I definitely don't have bankroll for a rolex or anything like that. I found this one on ebay for $600. Is it worth it to get a higher end watch?

They run quite well! the 20's one looses about 3-5 minutes a day, but I can live with that. I think it's pointless to buy omega replicas when you can get omega vintages quite cheap.

One Seiko chronograph. Quite cool IMO. Sturdy, reliable with that aviator look. Big and perhaps a bit to heavy. I like it but don't use it that often anymore.

And also this Stuhrling, which is a chinese brand with german name. It has an automatic movement (charges with wrist motion) that is superbly accurate! However It has a nice classier design and gets the most attention even though it's the cheapest. It cost 90€ on amazon.co.uk
They have other good looking watches and if you want something with expensive looks and cheap, you could search there.

I have an Omega Seamaster from 1962. It's an amazing watching and winds up too. I like the older watches more because they're easier to fix. I can go to any watch shop and get it repaired since I tend to go through watches a little too fast.

So far, just the purchasing costs. 500€for the gold 250€for the silver.
The silver one has been worked recently. and the gold one has never been opened. They are good machines.

The silver one gets more attention, because its bigger and brighter. It surely makes a young guy stand out from all the other guys with oversized and overcrowded watches.
The were definitely two good deals. Classy, timeless, sharp, cheap and with a respectable name.

I own a Rolex Submariner...I get a lot of shit from "watch guys" about buying the brand name but it is the only watch i've owned that girls regularly notice. Women are dumb about stuff like this and so they will not know anything about great watches like IWC, Omega, etc. even though they may be of higher quality...so if your really into watches then of course get one of those brands but don't be bummed out when women think it it a $500 watch. Be prepared for women to compliment your friends $50 digital hipster watch and ignore your $5k IWC as this will happen. I personally feel like if your going to shell out for something this expensive it should be impactful to women and not just something male watch geeks understand but to each his own.

I actually could write forever on the topic of women's stupidity about men's style and the mistakes men make by getting too nerdy about this stuff...dressing to attract women is way different then getting the highest quality stuff...you almost have to get good stuff but dumb it down a bit so they understand and this is a good example of that IMHO.
