The mainstream media in the west and ivory tower academics always try to divide foreign policy into men wearing white and black hats. Let's put it this way every single arab muslim sunni could be playing for one side or the other from one day to the next depending on the political and social climate.

The idea of conviction, morality, and principles are culturally entirely different in that region. Trying to look at things in black/white is what led to training up mujahadeen and lionizing men like Bin Laden only for them to turn on the U.S. later. It's the same shit over and over again.

You look at that region like you're dealing with people from the medieval era because that's exactly what they are. That's why when people start singing praises of various muslim figures it's always a laugh. What is their background? What is their specific culture? What is their worldview? What is their agenda and the specific actions they have taken to fulfill goals to mark that agenda?

Examine those things with specificity and you start to get a clearer view of who these people really are.

The western Kurds need to attack the "moderate" terrorists north of Aleppo soon to slow their advance east against Islamic State. The US and Turkey changed tact and are using them to build a buffer in the north. Looks like the Syrian military will soon attack northeast of Aleppo which will help cover the Kurds.

The writing is on the wall... Islamic State is toast. The US, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia are positioning and advancing the "moderate" terrorists (green at the linked map) on the Turkish border north of Aleppo, maintaining them in Ibid, expanding them in the southern desert on the Iraq and Jordan borders, and using some sort of Kurdish-allied quasi-force of them by Raqqa and Deir ez-Zuir.

Syria needs to capture the Jordanian and most of the Iraqi border and the Shias in Iraq need to bridge to the Syrian border for the Shia crescent.

Syria (with Russian support) is moving on the moderate throat-slitters in Aleppo (North) and is pushing from Palmyra (East). Obama just announced an increase of US ground troops in Syria from 50 to about 300 if the numbers don't lie, much of which will be special forces. The stated goal of US troops is to assist with the liberation of Raqqa (ISIS stronghold in Northeast Syria), likely with the help of the Kurds.

The problem the Kurds have is if they overtly proxy against Assad for the US, then Assad/Russia could probably fall back to working out a deal or understanding with Erdogan to either jointly target Kurds or allow Erdogan to escalate things against the Kurds. Erdogan considers the Kurds a bigger problem than Assad. The US would have a hard time propping up the Kurds under those circumstances. If that were to happen, the Kurds would literally be fighting everyone there... IS, rebel terrorists, Assad, Turkey, and possibly Russia.

The Kurds are doing a good balancing act between the US and Assad/Russia. They need to continue that course and not swing too much towards the US. I'm sure Russia has done a good job impressing upon the Kurds the situation they're in. But the situation in Syria is fluid and things happen (like the dust up between Assad forces and Kurds in NE Syria this past week).

Excellent article in Huff Post from Alistair Crooke, a former MI6 Agent. he basically argues that the constant goading of Russia by NATO in the Baltics, Syria and Ukraine could lead to war. Also he argues that a Trump Presidency could be the breakthrough that we need although Trump needs to go further and nail his colours to the mast.

The train of thought by the warhawks and leadership in Israel is that ISIS is too primitive to mount a serious offensive against a well trained 1st world developed army. The Israel thinktank believes that plunging the entire region into backward extremism and perpetual civil war is better than having a collection of competing secular economies with a grudge against Israel. It's classic divide and conquer except more insidious since millions of lives are directly impacted through this type of foreign policy which is enabled by the current U.S. administration.

Syria is being used as a proving ground for all of the Russian forces, as an internal and external signal of strength, and as a way to test the forces' effectiveness after the recent (and ongoing) reforms.

Just to let you guys know.
I've read the whole text of what Erdogan said in Turkish, but I couldn't find one word of apology to russian authorities.
He addressed the family of the dead pilot when he said he was sorry for their loss.
He also commented that if a russian plane enters turkish airfield in the future the same engagement rules will apply.
But its nice to see things are getting ironed out between Turkey and Russia.
