If you could be fluent in only 5 languages (including Eng.) which would you choose?
07-26-2014, 05:00 PM
Five languages? I'd be happy with three. On top of English, Russian and Spanish would be nice because they're widely spoken by beautiful women.
If I could really learn five, I'd learn French and Wu. I've heard the Shanghai chicks are meant to be insane.

Spanish - Spoken by a large number of people and some of the most beautiful women in the world.
Japanese - A beautiful and interesting language spoken by some of the most feminine women in the world. Useful for my line of work.
Vietnamese - Spoken in a country I love and would love to live in some day. It is my vacation destination of choice.

English
Spanish
Russian
Mandarin
Arabic
French doesn't make my top 5 because the places it is spoken have English equivalents e.g. In west Africa; Ghana and Nigeria (biggest economy, Lagos; biggest city) people speak English. Europe and Canada have the same situation.

Speak English, mandarin and cantonese already. Learning Russian at the moment.
After Russian I would like to get Arabic and Spanish and perhaps Turkish under my belt because of their usefulness.

Since I'm now based in SEA and never plan to leave my list would be something like:
English
Thai
Tagalong
Vietnamese (or whatever language would help me in Vietnam most)
Cambodian (whatever language would be most useful there)
Right now I'm native level at English and Polish, intermediate in Thai and French with a tiny bit of German and Spanish.

English, Mandarin, Spanish, French, Russian
Why would anyone choose Cantonese? Everyone who speaks it also speaks Mandarin (in Guangdong Province and Macau) and/or English (Hong Kong and overseas Chinese).

Honestly the only reason i'd become fluent in a local language is really to show off to the locals (mostly women). but i agree with being happy in 3 languages; actually already know 3 but not quite fluent.
1 - English
2 - Japanese
3 - Thai
4 - Arabic (for business reasons)
5 - Portugese (for Brazil)
.

You could access to most of the worlds women with 4:
English
Spanish
Russian
Chinese
The tough one to choose is the fifth and comes down to preference. I would go with french because it unlocks a bunch of Africa. Love those big booties.

I speak English , French and Spanish and that's enough, I don't really have any desire to learn others but would consider Portuguese if a work opportunity in the oil biz came up somewhere like Brazil or Angola. Don't forget guys as the old saying goes, with languages: If you don't use it, you'll lose it. Ten years ago my French was at near native level (BA in French and certified bilingual by the Canadian government), I was going to school all day in French then working at a bilingual call centre at night, people on the phone knew I wasn't Quebecois but many assumed I was French African, which I though was hilarious. Then I moved out west and stopped speaking French on a regular basis, I can still hold a conversation but I'm always searching for words and my vocabulary is simple. Also, I often mix up French and Spanish, the worst is when I meet a French person in Colombia and switch between the two its a big mess but if their Spanish is decent then they understand.

1. English = language of the world.
2. German = most spoken native language in Europe and an esteemed language of science and literature.
3. Russian = language of the most beautiful women.
4. Spanish or French or Italian = language that sounds beautiful to speak.
5. Mandarin = language that sounds disgusting to my ears, nor am I particularly fond of the culture but I suppose this language would be very useful for business purposes.
