If you could be fluent in only 5 languages (including Eng.) which would you choose?

English (native language)
Russian (for business and women)
Spanish (for business and women)
Polish (for women)
Ukrainian (for women and an honest interest in the country, especially current events)

Honorary mention to German, though given the high level of English in the country I'll continue to pursue the others first.

English (Native language)
Spanish (same as above)
Japanese (The most practical third language I could learn for cultural/nerd reasons)
Russian (cultural reasons)
Can't make my mind as to the fifth, a toss up between German, Turkish and Mandarin.

1. Spanish- because so many damn people speak it and it covers so much of the map, especially places I like to travel. - I speak it pretty well now

2. Portugues- I love brazil, the culture, people, and the women. Plus, for me it's the best sounding language in the world. I speak it best other than English

3. Russian- it is pretty widely spoken throughout most of Eastern Europe. Seems to be a pretty useful language.

4. German- also useful throughout Europe, plus easy to learn other languages like Dutch and sweedish.

5. Chinese- strictly for monetary reasons, though I don't have much interest in the country itself.

2. English - most useful language.

3. Spanish - most spoken language in the world.

4. Japanese - cause Japan is awesome and I'm a goddamn geek who loves watching Japanese cartoons and shows.

5. Russian/French/Mandarin - can't choose to be honest.

1) English - The whole world speaks it
2) Mandarin - The whole world will speak it one day, largest economy in the making.
3) French(Quebecois) - The most beautiful language EVER, plus well needed in Canada if you do business here.
4) Spanish(Latin America and half of the US)
5) Russian - Gorgeous women, China's big brother[Image: wink.gif]

This, except Spanish and Russian for the emerging market potential as well as the amazing girls. Speaking multiple languages just has so much of a "James Bondness" about it that you've gotta do it.

Glad to see this has been a popular thread and got some discussions going, exactly what I wanted for something fun.

For those just joining us, I would point you to Espresso's great summary and graph of the results, thank you sir:

I wanna take this in a new direction now.

Let's assume you're now fluent in the 5 languages you selected.

If you could instantly learn some completely random ones (again, like The Matrix), not based on practical value (i.e. business or # of speakers), but purely for curiosity, culture, scholarly study, or even just liking the way it sounds, which ones would you pick?

For example, I like the sounds of Welsh, and the history of the area is interesting to me:

I would most likely also want to learn an aboriginal language like Inuktitut (spoken by the Inuit people of Canada's far north):

According to the new criteria:

1) Irish Gaelic (absolutely awesome language)
2) Swedish (for music mostly, I love Viking metal)
3) Finnish (same as above, plus it is almost completely unique)
4) Akkadian/Babylonian (to be able to read cuneiform tablets, highly underrated stuff, plus would greatly add to the exotic factor)
5) Ancient Greek (to be able to read the classics in the original)

Honorary mention to Faroese (basically a time capsule for Old Norse, much less visited than Iceland and thus more authentic)

1. English (British) - the international language, everyone speaks it, few (non-natives) speak it fluently
2. French - arguably the most beautiful language, considered the language of high culture and romance
3. Japanese - for the exotic factor
4. Chinese (Mandarin) - for economic purpose
5. German - no particular reason, just sounds badass

PS I already speak the first two, studied Japanese and Chinese for sometime but gave up, now I'm studying German

My revised list:

1) English (by far the most useful and dominant language in the world).

2) Mandarin (love Asian girls, it is the language with the highest number of native speakers in world, widely spoken, China will become the largest economy in the world soon).

3) Japanese (love Asian girls, poor English penetration in Japan, cultural/nerd reasons).

4) Spanish (very widely spoken).

5) Indonesian (enormous number of speakers, poor English penetration in Indonesia).

I would go strictly for geographical area. In no particular order:

1. Mandarin
2. Spanish
3. Russian
4. Arabic
5. Hindi

You pretty much have the globe covered with those. Only thing I would add would be French, which will cover broad swaths of non-Anglophone Africa. I dislike the way it sounds but hey, it's a language and all languages have their own beauty.

I'll hasten to add Hindi isn't necessary, since India speaks English, so perhaps I should have replaced that with French.

I already speak Mandarin, German, and Greek but, with the exception of the first, they are not the most commercial languages.

1. English - Already a native speaker.
2. Russian - My work involves Russia and I really need to knuckle down and get from holding basic conversations with dodgy grammar all day to being able to express myself/understand people in great detail.
3. Korean - I was considering putting Mandarin here but the whole tonal aspect of it just frustrates me, so Korean would be interesting as it's a wealthy Asian country. If the North ever breaks down the walls then having a grasp of the NK dialect would be a massive advantage for a foreigner.
4. Javanese - I prefer Asia to Africa/South America/Middle East, so it would be a good secondary language for the region.
5. - Some kind of barely-spoken language, maybe from an ethnic group somewhere in Russia like Yakut. It might not be as useful globally, but it's something unique you can drop into a conversation rather than something more common like Portuguese or German.

Russian - for some great Russian rock music and because I wanna live there one day
Dutch - I already know a bit and want to improve it
Indonesian - living in Australia, I feel it may be important one day
Bulgarian - for the music and because I might go there (I know the Macedonian (FYROM) dialect as well as standard Bulgarian)

English,
Spanish
Russian
French
Portuguese

This covers most of the classically big booty women on earth as well as many business opportunities. Also, 3 of the languages are romance languages and therefore relatively easy to learn for an English speaker.

This goal is quite attainable.

English- Native language and most spoken language around the world.

Spanish- widely used around the world much like English, especially in America and because the language itself is darn sexy. The women and divine, the food is heavenly and the music and dance is awesome too.

Japanese- getting notches in Japan is hard without some Japanese skill. Also because I'm a huge fan of Japanese anime and manga, as well as the fashion scene and drifting scene of Japan. The history and culture is awesome too.

Korean- The women are beautiful and the fashion and bboying scenes are second to none. Also for business opportunities. I really like how Korean sounds.

Mandarin- have many Chinese friends and a huge love and appreciation for the culture and history of the Middle Kingdom (my favorite book is a Chinese novel; Romance of the Three Kingdoms)

It sucks that I cannot play Cherokee or Seminole on this list (because I love my Native American peoples and want to keep the culture alive), but it's usage is obsolete. No European languages either is a huge crutch but I'll just run on exotic American play and hope for the best lol
