Woman falls off a cliff after taking selfie with flip flops

The problem here is not the Selfie per se. This shaming selfies trend is getting kind of ridiculous too. Like if selfies started just 4 years ago...

The problem is that the thought of taking appropriate gear for the situation (in this case, a good pair of hiking shoes) never entered her little brain, hence the outcome.

The best way to make someone feel shit about taking a selfie is to take the piss out of them in a non-aggressive way when you see them taking one.

Shouting "selfiiiiiiieeeeeee" in a stupid voice usually does the trick, or imitating the person in an over exaggerated manner. Makes people feel like the idiots they are.

If she is stupid enough to wear flip-flops to go hiking, it follows she'd be stupid enough to die by selfie.

id quod sequitur.

Don't tell women to be careful, tell selfies to stop being so tempting.

I've seen people take their boots off to swim or wade in streams and rivers. It can be especially enjoyable to do that at the base of a waterfall. I can imagine a scenario like:

Hike to the waterfall, take boots off, wade in the water, put on flip-flops, eat lunch, climb up to the top for a selfie while your flip-flops are still on...

Doesn't make it any less stupid, but it's at least conceivable how it might have happened.

This and never fails to get a chuckle while making a girly pose.

Darwinism at its finest. Can't beat nature.

Reminds me of the moment Gollum falls into Mount Doom adoring The Ring in the fall. Someone should edit a smartphone into that clip.

Whatever happened to "Excuse me sir/madam/ young man/whatever, would you very much mind taking a picture of me and my friend" You wouldn't? Thank you so much." Is that really so hard? I know the Catskills are near New York, but I'm sure she could have found someone willing to take her picture.

As for flip-flops, that is just crazy. Apart from the danger it would be very uncomfortable to hike and climb in flip-flops.

While I agree with you, I don't think the selfie is about capturing where someone was and appreciating a location/moment. It is an art form/style/all about me thing that asking a stranger to capture the moment cannot do properly. From angles, to selfie style, etc. a stranger won't meet the high narcissistic needs demanded by the typical woman.

I guess it was inevitable…

Man shoots himself while posing for a 'selfie'

A young Mexican man has died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while posing for a “selfie” with a loaded gun.
Oscar Otero Aguilar, who worked in a pet shop, is said to have been drinking with friends in Medero, in the north of the capital, Mexico City, when the accident happened.
A follower of the “selfie” craze - in which people pose for photographs they take of themselves - Otero Aguilar frequently posted pictures of himself on social media sites.

Must've been around too many hamsters at that pet shop.

"Unmarked section of the trail"

I'm sorry, I have trouble having any sympathy for someone that goes off the trail to do something stupid. Those trails are marked for a reason.

This is why selfies are not amongst the list of approved, safe memes.

It just hit me that people might not want to give their phone to strangers because the phone contains all sorts of personal information - photo gallerries/ nude shots/ adress book/ internet history etc. You are never quire sure what the stranger is doing while taking photos. He could even change your screen lock. Un unlikely possibility but it could make people uncomfortable. If you lose your phone you lose more then just a camra. Some phones contain a life's work of contact list that literally makes you unable to reach some people if the phone is lost.

It was different when we took more pictures with photocameras instead of phones. These cameras only held other photos that were regularry uploaded to computer and deleted from the memory of camera anyway. Plus you could see if the stranger is pushing the wrong buttons, but on a touchscreen you can't exactly see what is he doing.

It's not that I excuse fatal narcistic selfies, but I also think that some blame goes to the technology not just peeple.

But it is the type of technology involved that determines how stupid was that behavior exactly. Some types of technology forces people to make more risky decisions than others.

Just turn on the camera funtion before hand and hand it to them, show them where the button for taking picture is, I did it all the time before even when I didn't know any better, is it that hard to do that in America?
