Whatever happened to "Excuse me sir/madam/ young man/whatever, would you very much mind taking a picture of me and my friend" You wouldn't? Thank you so much." Is that really so hard? I know the Catskills are near New York, but I'm sure she could have found someone willing to take her picture.

It just hit me that people might not want to give their phone to strangers because the phone contains all sorts of personal information - photo gallerries/ nude shots/ adress book/ internet history etc. You are never quire sure what the stranger is doing while taking photos. He could even change your screen lock. Un unlikely possibility but it could make people uncomfortable. If you lose your phone you lose more then just a camra. Some phones contain a life's work of contact list that literally makes you unable to reach some people if the phone is lost.

It was different when we took more pictures with photocameras instead of phones. These cameras only held other photos that were regularry uploaded to computer and deleted from the memory of camera anyway. Plus you could see if the stranger is pushing the wrong buttons, but on a touchscreen you can't exactly see what is he doing.

It's not that I excuse fatal narcistic selfies, but I also think that some blame goes to the technology not just peeple.

Ja, that's possible. Also, the modern smartphones are really expensive (around $1,000 for an iphone) and the screens break easily.

Good point. You've spotted a gap in the market.

An app that lets you keep your camera open while locking everything else down would possible be a good sell.

If you think about it the whole selfie thing is a good way to murder someone. Just encourage them to pose for a selfie, timestamp it, and then kick them off the cliff. Claim it was all an accident.

edit: Not that I would condone such a thing.

No, if I was really evil I would have proposed something like this

1) Marry some obnoxious American cooze.
2) Get long joint life insurance policies from the beginning
3) Wine her dine her, treat like a spoiled fat queen for all to see.
4) Wait a couple years to establish plausible deniability. go on a trip to some beautiful canyon somewhere
5) Profit.

So does my Android (Sony).

There's something to a stranger running away with your expensive and important phone though. It's not a coincidence that the selfie stick was developed in Asia, where you can't really trust a stranger to take hold of your phone even for just a short while.

Having said that, data security isn't really an issue for most people. You can remote-wipe a phone in a flash, and most data (like contacts) should already be synced to the cloud.

I climb mountains, we jump up and down on the peak, and do stupid shit, but noone ever fall down. I just can wrap my mind around they manage to do it.
They are literally like lemmings marching down into the abyss. This is how nature manage overpopulation, turns on the lemming "selfie" gene?

As an avid hiker I've always warned whoever wanted to hear about the danger of fucking around right on the edge of a mountain/cliff for a stupid photo opportunity. I try to explain that in that situation the tiniest slip could mean plummeting to death. Of course I was always dismissed as a killjoy. Predictable copycat lols come before basic safety, apparently.

You are also #ParkourShaming.

Next you will be telling women they can't slip into zoo enclosures to take selfies with their favorite big cats!

Or that if they have to swim with sharks, or use a dolphin as a midwife, they shouldn't do it while menstruating.

I stand with the #DeathWhisperers.

Now this quote finally makes sense:

Non solum eventus hoc docet - iste est magister stultorum! - sed etiam ratio.
- Livy

Literal translation: Not only does the outcome teach this - this is the teacher of fools - but also reason.

Paraphrase: Experience is the teacher of fools when the same thing could have been learned from reason

I've never tried to take a selfie with flip-flops before. Always used a phone.

If you look into killer whale related deaths at Sea World, etc...there was one moron that got naked and jumped into the pool at night to be one with the orca. The orca bit off his junk and drowned him.

Think it was mentioned in the movie Black Fish.
