80 Vaccine Dodgers Catch Chicken Pox

Saw this on Reddit, I have had vaccinations, I just don't know what the deal is about not having them.

Not trying to make too much fun of them, but 80 out of 320 pupils at this school caught chicken pox apparently all within a day or so. Some of them may be students who were vaccinated but with a vaccination there are fewer spots. Apparently, the vaccine has an 80 percent success rate.

A partial quote here. There is a video that I can't embed.

Eighty children who attend a Brunswick school that calls for tolerance for vaccine dodgers have contracted chickenpox.

Up to 80 of the 320 pupils at Brunswick North West Primary in Melbourne's north have become ill with chickenpox in the past fortnight.

The school says it respects 'the rights of every family to make choices about immunisation'.

It is understood the illness spread though grade 6, before making its way through the lower levels to grade 2.

"There are no firm figures on the number of students who have contracted the illness since then, but we've been advised that over the period there has been an absentee rate of about 25 per cent on any given day," a department spokesman said.

Just wait until polio and TB start becoming a thing again too because people don't want to vaccinate properly. I view the immunization kooks like I do the guys who want to ride motorcycles without helmets. It's all on you, buddy. Except the parents who choose to do this are fucking their kids up too.

I had no idea you could be immunized for chicken pox.

I learned something new I guess.

I didn't know there even was a chickenpox vaccine, heck, there used to be chicken pox parties to get all the kids infected in an area. It's better to have it as a kid, because if you get it when much older, it can kill you.
It's not deadly for kids, but hey with a vaccine at least they won't have to deal with shingles later in life.

TB is exploding.
The powers that be are keeping a lid on it because of antibiotic abuse. They would rather let people die than develop atibiotic resistant strains from not following through with a complete regimen.

The problem with people not vaccinating their kids is that they put other kids at risk. Vaccines work by providing "Herd Immunity" to a given group, which is dependent on a high rate of vaccination. This helps protect kids who can't be vaccinated for bona fide reasons and protects vaccinated kids, since not all vaccinations are 100% effective, because there are fewer opportunities for the disease to spread.

Chalk me up too. I always thought Chicken Pox was more or less a 'mandatory' disease when you're young.

Who gives a shit if kids get chicken pox?
When I got chicken pox it kinda itched, and I got a week off from school.
Overall it was a pretty good deal.

At first I thought this thread was going to be about the L.A. Dodgers getting chicken pox.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

I had the chicken pox too when I was growing up without any long term concerns, though I've been told that shingles hurting like a bitch is an understatement.

It would be a little more worrisome if the kids without the chicken pox vaccine weren't vaccinated against other diseases like the measles, polio and whooping cough. It would only take one child travelling to SEA or EE and bringing it back to school to cause an outbreak.

My mother did something like this when I was five and my sister was eight. One of her friends kids had chicken pox and she took us over their, scratched our forearms and had the kid rub her pox blisters on the scratches. We both got really bad pox on our arms that never spread to the rest of our bodies. She did it during summer vacation so we wouldn't miss school.

I also had no idea there was a vaccine.

The chicken pox vaccine was first licensed only in 1995, I understand. Probably why a lot of the guys here haven't heard of it or weren't given it.

Chicken pox is a virus that stays in your body, and there's always the chance of reactivation via shingles due to advancing age or a compromised immune system. Your 'good deal' now means you have a 1 in 3 chance of this happening to you at sometime in your life, with the potential for blindness if it attacks your eye, and a 50% chance if you live to 85.

It's always extremely-painful, and, sometimes, catastrophic.

The baby in that article is now guaranteed to have these complications later in life due to its age.

I had chicken pox in my twenties, and I was so weak with pain and fatigue from postherpetic neuralgia I could barely get out of bed for 2 1/2 years. It's part of the reason why I'm very emotionally-resilient man, and live very, very healthily.

There is no excuse for this kind of selfishness. The tool exists to prevent it.

I'm not looking forward to (the possibility of) shingles, an elderly neighbor of mine had it for a month or so, sounded very very painful. If I had the option of getting the vaccine as a child, I'm sure my parents would've done it. I'll get it for my kids, when they are old enough, and after I make some. Cart before the horse so to speak.

My uncle has the shingles in his 60s a few years ago all across his back and shoulder - he mentioned the pain and was unable to play golf for several months because of it.

AB, sorry to hear about your experience.

There have been ads for a shingles vaccine all over TV in the US recently. Not sure how old you have to be, but sounds like it's worth checking out.

Even if vaccines "worked" by providing immunity against their particular target, they wouldn't be worth the damage done by injecting foreign DNA, metals, toxins, directly into the bloodstream.

My great grandmother got shingles in her eye socket and they had to sew that sucker shut. Thank god for vaccines, and god bless those little kiddos whose parents are too fucking ignorant to give their children such protection.
