I'm curious as well, but I think it just comes down to the collagens, whether from fish or cows.

I believe Collagen is easier to digest and can be mixed into virtually anything (protein shakes, smoothies, water).

Gelatin is only soluble in hot liquid, like soup, hot tea etc.

I use this brand to try and help me with joint and back pain. (I have degenerated discs and instability in both my shoulders): http://www.amazon.com/Great-Lakes-Gelati...ydrolysate

Not sure if it's working … I also just added L-Glutamine and Serrapeptase for joint health…I was always under the impression that Collagen was great for joints + connective tissue…nice to know it helps skin and hair too.

Quick question:
I bought Meiji amino collagen from Amazon. The packaging is in Japanese. What's the usual serving size?

Does anybody here take type II collagen? It seems the most common type is Type I & III. From what I can tell the type II is made from chicken sternums, and apparently it shouldn't be taken with type I & III or it will form a complete protein and get digested as protein instead of collagen.

Directions: Using the spoon given only in the can version of the Meiji Amino Collagen, take one scoop - worth 7 grams - and mix it in water, coffee or juice. It is one scoop of the provided spoon with a flat top, so scrape off the rounded top using the edge of the lid - as shown in the picture.

I just ran out yesterday. Dammit. Looking into switching over to the beef gelatin capsules:

http://www.iherb.com/Now-Foods-Beef-Gela...psules/393

~$11 for 550mg in 200 capsules.

For the record, however, I do firmly believe the best way to get collagens is though bone broth. However, those of us that travel need other ways to get it.

That thread needs bumped, as the holidays is the perfect time to make some batches and freeze. And MidniteSpecial gets a +1. I didn't realize he'd started that thread.

Being a cheap ass, I bought the refill pack which doesnt include a scoop. I can probably work out 7 grams on my kitchen scales.(no I'm not a drug dealer.)

This is barbaric, but sometimes I eat the cartilage right off the end of chicken bones.

I figured the powder would be more elegant.

Where did all those who said they'd report back after three months go?
I'd be interested in hearing about results from a larger sample size. Either way, I'm gonna order Ali's 350-tablet pack and let you know my thoughts in a couple of months.

Where I'm from you strip the bone. I ate three chicken legs yesterday and crunched away at everything that wouldn't chip a tooth. Men were born with teeth for a reason, which is why I'm not a fan of juicing as an adult. We come into the world getting our food through a nipple, and usually die that way, but everything in between? Naw the bones and enjoy being a carnivore.

I do refrain from eating like a Alisaurus in a 'proper' social setting, as I've made females gag chewing on pork chop cartilage.

@ pointbreak- I'm ordering the gelatin capsules tonight also. Can't find a bad review online. Lot of positive from old people like me. My joints are fucked.

What's the main difference between collagen I & III vs type II? Is it only about the source of the collagen or is there any difference on the effects? Is one type better than the other for anti-aging? I usually always bought type II, but the type I & III was on sale from the same brand so I bought it. It looks way different than the type II and calls for taking more tablets.

I don't like referencing Wiki, but it links to a bunch of studies. Read away.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collagen

Quote:Quote:

Collagen occurs in many places throughout the body. Over 90% of the collagen in the body, however, is of type I.[39]
So far, 28 types of collagen have been identified and described. The five most common types are:
Collagen I: skin, tendon, vascular ligature, organs, bone (main component of the organic part of bone)
Collagen II: cartilage (main component of cartilage)
Collagen III: reticulate (main component of reticular fibers), commonly found alongside type I.
Collagen IV: forms basal lamina, the epithelium-secreted layer of the basement membrane.
Collagen V: cell surfaces, hair and placenta

Would assume most supplements have both types I and II.

Quote:Quote:

Type II collagen and rheumatoid arthritis
According to a study[54] published in the journal Science, oral administration of type II collagen improves symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. The authors conducted a randomized, double-blind trial involving 60 patients with severe, active rheumatoid arthritis. A decrease in the number of swollen joints and tender joints occurred in subjects fed with chicken type II collagen for 3 months, but not in those that received a placebo. Four patients in the collagen group had complete remission of the disease. No side effects were evident.

Hydrolyzed type II collagen and osteoarthritis
A published study[55] reports that ingestion of a novel low molecular weight hydrolyzed chicken sternal cartilage extract, containing a matrix of hydrolyzed type II collagen, chondroitin sulfate, and hyaluronic acid, marketed under the brand name BioCell Collagen, relieves joint discomfort associated with osteoarthritis. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) enrolling 80 subjects demonstrated that BioCell Collagen was well tolerated with no serious adverse event and led to a significant improvement in joint mobility compared to the placebo group on days 35 (p = 0.007) and 70 (p < 0.001).

Quote:Quote:

A preclinical study investigated the effects of oral ingestion of hydrolyzed collagen, along with vitamin C and glucosamine, suggested that the moisture content of skin, its viscoelastic properties, and smoothness benefit.[7]
The mechanism of action of ingested hydrolyzed collagen on skin may be the increased density of collagen fibrils and the fibroblasts' density (the fibroblasts being the main cells of the dermis, and those producing collagen).[8] It may be that that the peptides of ingested hydrolyzed collagen have chemotactic properties on fibroblasts[9] or an influence on growth of fibroblasts.[10]

And some info on gelatin:

Some of the posters on Amazon are saying that type 1 and 3 are for beauty purposes, and type 2 is for inuries.

That's interesting. How does collagen specifically target scars?

Its combined with dermarolling, basically needling the face to create micro-wounds which supposedly induces the skin to produce collagen to heal the skin.
The amino collagen is there to create an evironment where the wounds heal fast and nicely.

Status update on this? I have some connects in Japan that can bring me stuff to the USA. There's so many different types though, pills, creams, drinks, etc.

Of course I can get product here in the states, but would Japan's products be better or not? Please let me know what you guys think. I will be 30 in the Fall and trying to ward off wrinkles (mostly brought on by stress).

I've been taking this brand since mid-December, but haven't seen any discernible results. It may be working, but I can't determine.

I may try Alis brand next.

Paleo "guru" Chris Kesser has an article posted today about why gelatin/collagen is so beneficial to health:

http://chriskresser.com/5-reasons-why-ev...ed-gelatin

In short, the big benefit comes from glycine.

Like Ali, I prefer to get it from bone broth I make myself. I buy grass fed soup bones from local ranchers at my locale's farmer's market, and make batches of broth overnight in the crockpot, than freeze for use in making soups, stews, gravies and sauces.

Because I do this regularly, I've never tried any of the supplements ya'all mention here...but if, like Ali, I were to go on an extended trip without the ability to make or acquire bone broth, I'd probably give this stuff a try.

I was thinking about trying this out since as a white dude, skin quality is the single greatest limiting factor for keeping youthful appearance as long as possible.

But, I just can't square the circle here from a metabolic perspective. Collagen is just a protein, and so it gets broken up into its constituent amino acids long before it enters the general circulation and reaches the dermis.

That being so, wouldn't it be much more cost effective to look at the amino acid composition of collagen and buy the raw AAs?

I've been taking those big pills but didn't notice difference in my skin. I'm just taking it as a hope for hair loss and skincare.
Its pretty big pill and you need to take 5 each day.
Its cheap so just give it a shot.

Huh, I sometimes deeply crave gummy bears and sure enough it has gelatin in it.

Couldn't I just eat jello and get the same effect?

Based on Ali's feedback I've decided to start ingesting collagen. I'm going to do the 28-day program from Meiji. It's one of the most expensive out there, but I figure if any of these products will work, then it will have to be the Japanese. I'll report back in a month.

I'm just about finished with the Meiji collagen.

I actually do see some change. What I notice the most is that my nasolabial folds are not as pronounced. The second biggest thing is that the fingers on my right hand, which are generally achy all the time, have stopped hurting.

Otherwise my face's skin appears a little bit dewier. And my skin is not as dry as it used to be. The last one could be on account of the changing season, so I'm sceptical if the collagen had anything to do with it.

All-in-all, I'm impressed since I wasn't expecting any change at all. I've had no apparent side effects but didn't anticipate any since this is basically a food stuff. I'm going to reorder and see if there are any further improvements.
