Towson University Students Report Mother Seeking Dates For Son

Ahead of Valentine's Day, a woman is trying to play matchmaker on the campus of Towson University.

Campus police say that on Feb. 6 and 7, students near Cook Library and the Center for the Arts reported being approached by an older woman who attempted to show them a picture on her cell phone and ask if they were interested in dating her son.

The woman is described as appearing to be in her 50s, with glasses, jeans and a striped long sleeve shirt with red trim, a multi-colored scarf, brown shows and a dark-colored coat.

After receiving multiple complaints from the mother's picks, campus police issued an "incident advisory" that included a link to pictures of the woman so that she might be identified. Chief Charles Herring said her reported behavior "may cause concern."

University officials say the woman isn't being sought for a criminal investigation, but they do want the third-party propositioning to stop. Anyone with information is asked to call campus police at 410-704-4444.

Poor guy. That has to be incredibly embarrassing. This is an old school mainland Chinese thing. In cities in China, there are "marriage markets" where parents meet and network with each other to try and find significant others for their children who are, as far as they know, too busy working and/or studying to do it themselves.

This Asian mother is based. Strangely enough I assumed it was an Asian mother to begin with.

All things considered, I admire her-- much better for her to do things the traditional way than for the son to try his luck on Tinder or navigate the minefield of drunken dorm room sex, it's like playing Russian Roulette.

This is the type of tiger parenting I can get behind!

Seriously if the son tries to approach girls he may get a Title 9 complaint. As I always say, "get the women to do your dirty work for you."

Of course they're not going to arrest a Chinese woman who's not culturally calibrated, but if a dude tried, he'd at least get banned from the campus.

The china marriage market and matchmaking concepts are pretty smart. Whatever town I'm in I always wonder if there's a girl out there who's very compatible with me but I'll never meet her because we'll never cross paths. It's a more efficient, honest version of online dating.

Every young man and woman past age 16 should get potential matches in their area to at least meet. At highschool debate tournaments going to different schools and walking past tons of girls from the other school I always wondered there's way better matches out there but you don't get access to them and it made me sad. Who knows how many failed marriages would've been prevented if more thorough searches were possible in your youth.

I had no idea about this practice in China, but I imagine if this were a white American woman with a good-enough looking son, this may not even be a story. Or perhaps the girls would find this "cute" and the story would be praising the mother.

Yeah, as soon as I started reading it I knew the mother would be Chinese. If you go to any major public park in China on a certain day of the week (Saturday IIRC? Maybe Sunday) there will be dozens or hundreds of parents out there with personal ads set up.

Massive insensitivity. Those females caused his mom (an elder) and him, as well as his family, to publicly lose face solely because the mother was practicing and inviting them to practice their traditional custom in a non-violent and non-threatening way. She gave them a huge compliment by suggesting that they were good enough for her son and they responded by reporting her to the police for essentially just being an old FOB (Fresh Off the Boat) and treating them nicely. The poor woman must feel terribly heartbroken and unwelcome. This is simply wrong and it should not be the image that we present to the world. Such vicious racism and biggotry has no place on campus and neither do they.

You all have my permission to copy and paste this into emails to the Towson University administrators.

If she broke no law, and the university is on public land, what right do the officials have to tell her that she should stop?

Why is campus police getting involved at all?

The chinese that are about the parent's age and older still retain the traditional notions of arranged marriages. And how marriage is a family affair and not merely between the partners in question by themselves.

Western males disgusted with the current dating/marriage scene in their countries might find the Chinese "marriage market" appealing, but as a guy from a similar culture (Indian living in India), I have another viewpoint.

Similar things/mindset exists in India where parents try to find a match for their sons and daughters. The problem is that both the families bring a very materialistic mindset to the discussion. It's like a business deal. Even if one side is poorer than the other ( and not poor poor, just not as much money as the other), the "deal" is off. People here talk about female hypergamy, but the reverse is true as well. Guys and their families want a woman from a well-off family or as is the trend nowadays, a woman with a good education so that she has good career prospects ($$).

I find the western mindset more natural. Union based on mutual interests, similar personalities or at least some level of physical attraction.

Overall, seems like a case of grass is greener on the other side!
