The Paleo Diet

Not breaking news, but this is a good article on why your should lean away from processed factory foods:http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2011/10/food_labels_may_not_tell_you_e.html

I've mentioned I've been on a strict paleo diet for a few weeks now, no exceptions. Interestingly I had some acne flareups and I think it may have been from a sugar-free energy drink mix which had a ton of random unidentifiable ingredients in it.

I've cheated off paleo a few times now, moreso with processed stuff rather then sugar/wheat and so far even with many servings of fruit in my daily intake, I'm still losing weight, gaining muscle, and feeling great.

I'm convinced, this is it for me.

Eat meat. Eat Fruit. Lose Weight. Cant beat it.

Glad to hear it.. I am in the preplanning stages. Trying to switch over to real/homemade food first.

I'm curious, how many calories do you guys eat per day?

Between 2000-2500, usually.

I honestly haven't done any research of my own on the paleo diet thing... but from what I've heard you still are missing out on a lot of nutrients.

Aside from disease, vaccinations, extreme temperatures, predators, etc... there's a reason our ancestors only lived to about age 30 on average -- I think diet has a lot to do with it. Besides, I prefer more of a variety... so I don't think it's for me.

The only obviously nutrients you don't get is calcium but I never really drank milk to begin with so I'm not to concerned

That whole Ancestors living to 30 is a myth perpetuated by ignorance which works to the benefit of corporations. Is there any reason why Americans are the most medicated group of people on earth ?

Our ancestors lived just as long if not longer than we do.

As far as nutrients. Paleo Covers all the nutrients you need. Calcium is NOT required in large amounts. If you eat any kind of spinach regularly you are getting enough calcium in your diet. If your worried about bones, you need to focus on ingesting or topically absorbing cholecalciferol

Well magnesium is very hard to get with any diet. Its just not in the soil anymore in significant quantities. Omega 3 is also hard to get enough of, or you have to keep your omega 6 really low.

Interesting stuff there, but it looks like there is still a lot left to speculation... considering the paleo era was roughly from 500,000 to 6,000 B.C. I think I'll stick to a wider variety myself, just in case you guys develop deficiencies later in life. [Image: lol.gif]

now when you say a wider variety, what do you mean specifically ? What are you currently eating that can not be found in the paleo diet ?

I already eat a lot of meat and fruit, and that was long before I'd ever heard of this diet. I also eat a lot of carbs but I've been trying to cut back lately (pasta addict). I've packed on about 30 lbs in muscle over the past year and a half but I've got about 5-7 in fat on my gut thanks in part to all the drinking I do. I also probably consume too much dairy (cheese, milk, yogurt, etc.), but I'm not about to change my eating habits over it. I'm in great shape already, being able to eat what I enjoy is a huge plus for me. The occasional chocolate or ice cream doesn't hurt.

Our ancestors did die really young, but it wasn't because any of the "lifestyle diseases" or "diseases of civilization" like communicable infections, obesity, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and so forth. Usually you'd get bitten by something nasty or mauled by a predator before you had the chance to develop any illnesses related to your diet. I'm not super gung-ho on the whole "don't eat anything a caveman couldn't have eaten" thing, but it does make a certain amount of sense that our digestive system would have evolved to deal most efficiently with the kind of nutrient balance that our ancestors had available to them. And there's a growing amount of morphological and physiological evidence to support that notion.

Personally I just eat whatever the hell I want and make sure I'm consuming an appropriate number of calories relative to my activity level. If you don't overeat and you exercise regularly you've already put yourself light years ahead of the typical American.

Dead on.

This is the key point most Americans miss.

Cool, so I can eat Pizza, pasta, Microwave Dinners, candy, soda and maybe 1 banana. I just need to make sure I exercise and not over eat and I should be "Light years ahead of the typical American" !! GENIUS ! "dead on genius"

Actually you can. Calorie intake is everything. Google "twinkie diet experiment."

I'm sure what Gringo meant by his "light years ahead" comment was that Americans consume too many calories daily by making poor life choices (not exercising, snacking, binge eating, etc.). By not doing that, you're way ahead of most Americans.

You sure could. On that diet you'd probably have to either eat very small portions or do cardio like a motherfucker to not gain weight, though. Eventually nutrient deficiencies could come into play too but in the developed world you'd really have to take it to extreme to see that sort of effect, especially if you take a multivitamin.

How much you eat is much more important than WHAT you eat.

I stick to a vague paleodiet during the week, and then eat carbs to achieve an insulin spike over a 36 hour period on the weekends. Supposed to help for muscle gain, only been at it 2 weeks, will report.

DISCLAIMER: I don't know what I'm talking about and my posts are opinion, not advice.

Funny how you guys talk about nutrient deficiencies yet claim its OK to anything you want, just so long as its in moderation.

Prowl, what is the reason for spiking your insulin on the weekends over a 36 hour period ??

First of all, I didn't claim to eat garbage. I said that you COULD lose or maintain weight by eating virtually anything as long as you limit your calorie intake.

I don't agree -- Quantity of calories is important, yes, but 1,800 calories of big macs every day will have a much more negative effect on my body that 3,000 calories of lean proteins, fruits, and veggies.

Will be interested to hear more as you learn about this. I personally can't switch so rapidly between paleo and non-paleo because it fucks with my body. Right when your body gets used to a different fuel type, you fuck with it by adding heavy carbs back in.

side note: I think people in general are starting to use the term paleo loosely when they really mean low carb. Paleo is naturally lower carb, but it's not just a low carb diet.

Paleo is not a low carb diet. It says you can eat all the carbs you want.

...not all carbs are created equal

and you are correct, WHAT you eat is THE MOST important component of nutrition.

I completely disagree.

I've lost a combined 50 pounds using the Atkins diet and I was eating close to 4000 calories a day, but I kept my daily carb intake under 20 grams.

On paleo I'm eating about 2500-3000 calories a day, but eating no dairy and no starch, and I'm still losing weight.

For those who eat "whatever" they want, yet still lose weight, or for those who apply the science of a specialized diet, I wonder how much emphasis there is on cholesterol levels, triglycerides, etc.? Are you getting your blood tested once a year, once a month? These things probably are not taken into consideration for the short term , but then again, neither is Diabetes, or High Blood Pressure, in the long term. All these things are pre-cursors, which usually occurs over time. With each person having varying metabolic rates, it is quite easy to see how you can eat 3 full grown pigs complete with entrails, daily, and not gain a pound, yet, you may have arteries so clogged up, that only a root-rooter specialist could render help. Point is, poor diet, (even in moderation), temporary healthy eating, or insulin spikes / yo-yo diets, are at best, gratifying, but they can produce nasty habits, that lead to long term irreversible damage. It's hard to be patient when you wanna "look" and "feel" your best.

The cholesterol theory is bunk. Cholesterol itself is used to transport fat to cells that need it. Its also used in cellular walls as well and brain mylein sheething if I remember biology correctly. The reason you would have really high cholesterol is that your doing something that damages the walls of the vein constantly. High blood pressure which can be caused by too much sugar and water. The thing to watch for is the type of cholesterol present. The one type I think A of the LDL, is tiny and tends to get stuck in things. The other is fluffy and harmless. The standard cholesterol test only measures overall cholesterol and HDL, so the LDL tends to be calculated. There are test like the VAP which specifically test the type which are more useful. Also A1C for inflammatory markers, and thyroid tests are worth having. I will be having test often since I have an IBD which are more severe than IBSs.
