If you'll forgive me, I'd like to share some random thoughts and anecdotes about my interactions with the Philippines that hopefully add some complexity. Many of these thoughts will be off the cuff.

- I have an ex whose the only daughter out of 9 kids. Her mom left her and her brothers when she was very young. Her dad and a lot of her brothers are hooked on shabu and living in the province. They guilt her into sending back money while doing nothing for themselves. She got herself to college and worked hard to get an information technology degree and eventually made it into the BPO field. She works nonstop, gets yelled at by people all day, but bites her lip and does it regardless. She dreams of finding a foreigner who will take her out of that reality. None of her brothers are willing to do any work, meanwhile. She's barely supporting herself but still sends back money to home. I know she's impulsive and would make a terrible wife, but I still admire her devotion to family. She usually puts others before herself, and I respect her for it.

- After typhoon Yolanda, I had a chance to talk with the manager of a resort in Boracay. His attitude was that it's not their problem, it's the government that should be doing more to help repair the damage. This is a strange attitude compared to post-earthquake Japan, who banded together and took the repair process into their own hands. When I later found out how much Filipinos pay in taxes, and how much of it was wasted, I then began to understand the frustration.
Many of the donated goods never made it to the victims, they were diverted to Manila and sold for profit while thousands of people suffered and died in Tacloban.

- The same manager somehow found out that I was american, and was vacationing during thanksgiving. Up to this point I never mentioned my nationality. He must have looked up the tradition, and prepared a big feast to surprise me. They didn't have a turkey, so they bought and roasted a whole pig instead. He later said they went through all that trouble just so I wouldn't feel homesick. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. Filipino hospitality.

- I once dated a woman whose mother was Waray. She came with us on our way to the airport, and hailed a cab for the last leg. We were early, but for some reason she said we're going to miss the flight if the driver doesn't rush. What followed was the most nailbiting taxi experience I've ever lived through. She laughed at my terror.

- I went to the divisoria to help my ex's mother (I'll call her tita) get supplies for her pharmacy. While checking out, I noticed one of the salesladies staring me up with passion in her eyes. She asked tita if I was single and how she knew me. Tita looked at me fondly and said "He's my daughter's boyfriend, my future son in law." She/he also does a good job outlining the chronology of the birth of critical thinking in the west (the 90's). We in the west had never even heard of a scams before. We should really thank these ingenious Thai girls for correcting the naivety in western civilisation? people have really weird views on women marrying up in general, It's almost as if some people think these girls shouldn't want to improve their lives and their families lives and personal finances/class should be static at birth.It sound almost communist?
