Budapest vs. Belgrade:
I lived in Budapest for about a year and I'd say it's easily on par for quality. For long term living, I agree with Buddha's point that it is probably harder with the upper echelon, which can probably be chalked up to the cultural/linguistic barrier which also stifles making friends and building a social circle. In Budapest I ended up hanging out with almost exclusively non-local friends where as in Belgrade it's more the reverse. That being said it is very easy to make limitless expat friends in Budapest while in Belgrade the foreigners are mostly transient.

To be fair Belgrade is a bit of a hole in comparison to Budapest. It has a few features (e.g. kalemegdan/boat nightlife/the rivers) that somewhat redeem itself, but the building facades are almost universally unpainted and literally crumbling. The restaurants and nightlife also come up short when it comes to variety and sophistication. The heavy smoking will be an issue for some, particularly during the fall/winter when virtually every venue becomes a bona fide hot box. I guess the upside to this is the less intense tourism draw keeps the drunken foreigner "stag party" element smaller, and keeps the foreigner reputation somewhat more intact than it is in Budapest.

Is Belgrade Oversold?
The women and people in general are probably the best thing the city has going for it. Serbians in Belgrade (the center specifically) are pretty happy and very friendly (save the occasional cab driver who puts you on a guilt trip about NATO's involvement in the civil conflict). For that reason the guys who are most well liked by Serbian women are going to be huge proponents of the city and I think it does create a selection bias to some degree. It's certainly much easier to gloss over a city's major flaws if you're thrilled with your dating life.

I was getting a lot of attention from women here so I sold Belgrade pretty hard to some expat friends as a long term destination only to discover that Serbian women weren't reacting to them as well despite being otherwise good looking suave dudes. Most guys are going to be hating life if they're stuck with 6s and 7s when they have to see jaw droppers on a regular basis. High quality Serbian women are discerning and smart so generally they make guys work for it, probably largely due to Serbian men being pretty big players. They definitely sniff you out well enough to know if you aren't living here long term.

Belgrade might be a good fit if you are well above average attractiveness/height and planning to live here long term with an international source of money. Since Serbians are very capable people, it's also not a bad place to woodshed a skill like guitar or particularly tennis without breaking the bank. I play at the Novak Djokovic Center and it's a nice perk being able to hit with some world class talent cheaply (hit me up if you're in town and solid). I do think in general some guys get a little over excited on first impression by the niceness/curiosity of the women and the rave reviews only to get super frustrated when things consistently come up dry or move a lot more slowly than they were expecting.

Cliff notes:
Budapest is more international, much nicer aesthetically and wins in quality of life and sophistication but there's more of a cultural/linguistic barrier. The people of Belgrade are just as attractive, kinder and more welcoming, but the city as a whole does get oversold by the well above average looking foreigner contingent that also happens to be willing to live here long term and put in the work.

It's fine, I'm just saying that logistically the field starts to shrink pretty fast with each extra inch shorter you are below average since a very significant percent are 5'7-5'8ish+ and wearing big heels to boot. Being well above average looks is of course a lot more important than being way above average height but with the latter you definitely have a bigger field to play on, especially here.

I met many serbs in Budva, a lot of them are indeed extremely tall, muscular and pretty alpha..more importantly the girls are also equally as tall, many taller than me (i'm 184 cm) even without heels.

I found the girls to be pretty alpha too in a way, there are not many petite girls like in Italy, France and even Russia has way more of these type of girls. Some of the facial features can get pretty masculine as they age up, they wear a lot of makeup and a lot of them dress like sluts or strippers/prostitutes in a city like Budva. A serbian guy told me its mostly the village girls who dress like that for their big night out but still. Their look can be very intimidating. I call these girls mafia type girls since they often have fake lips too and are hanging out with guys twice as big as me. Every guy would fear approaching these girls because of the guys that were surrounding them.

The biggest thing one will notice though is that many people go out in groups and get a table, then drink on the table with their friends, mixed groups or only female groups but it still make the approaches difficult in clubs and bars. Thought i'd introduce myself. Been a lurker here for a while but just my account activated. hope to contribute.

It's my 3rd time here. I can confirm that the girls here aren't the easiest compared to most parts of Eastern Europe, but its not like Spain or Argentina, where it feels like you're pulling teeth. (Lived long term in both and I speak fluent spanish). I've never pulled here in Serbia (last 2 trips were less than a week, but I did get some numbers, make out with some chicks at clubs, so its not impossible to pull I don't think, but you do need to put some work into it)

Staying you're saying here long term and knowing a few serbian words and making it clear you aren't a backpacker goes a long way here.

It seems the dudes are really tall but the women are not freakishly tall like Holland or something and they don't usually wear heels either (its not practical). Have not seen one fat chick anywhere in the city, though it seems every girl on tinder on belgrade is fat (perhaps they hide in basements?)

Besides women, Belgrade is an extremely livable city. There is a cafe on literally EVERY corner, and if you earn USD on the internet here, you are KING (avg salary in Belgrade is about $700 month). I am living in a beautiful 2br apartment with a friend here, we got a 6 week lease for 450euros each, has A/C, all the amenities.

However, as poor as the girls are here, they won't be seduced by your "foreignness." As far as I can tell it doesn't work in your favor, but doesn't work against you either. If you show some interest in Serbian culture they really like that (and don't dare compare Serbia to Croatia, don't even mention if you've been there)

The weather is also really nice here (though currently in a brutal heatwave). Sept/Oct is great time to visit, the few backpackers that roll through here are gone, and the students come back and average temps are in the 70s day 50s night (18-26C)

Also not in the Schengen zone so if your 90 days are almost up, its a great place to get another 90 days. From my friends who live here, from my understanding you could basically leave every 90 days and come back and they don't really enforce it so you could live here permanentely undocumented if you wanted to.

This is the formula. Good advice to everyone else wanting to live or play here. Props to Buddha for jumping right in and proving the 3 date method works. Very easy to have a steady harem here if you put in the work.

I will say though I've yet to see anyone with a stereotypical Serbian 9 here. Breaking past the "average" 7-8 Serbian girl (even though average in Belgrade is much higher than most other places) is difficult. Access to these requires some social circle game or luck.

There are certainly some downsides to Belgrade after the first few months. You get used to the quality, the city is not pretty, Serb girls are cold, Serbian is a hard language to learn, few amenities, slower in the summer, and the fucking winter... If you can manage a winter here then good for you. One winter here reminds me of the northern US. Cold, boring and miserable.

As Readysetgo mentioned, Belgrade is not a place for high notches cause you are bound to get caught sooner than later. Just about every girl within a specific age bracket is tied to a mutual social circle by only a few connections away.

This is all too true. The main problem IMO is that no one venture out of center. And when you do the quality and English goes down.
