As much as I love my staple, there's something to be said for drinking what is local/good/what everyone else is drinking. Examples:

If I'm at the Kentucky Derby, I'll drink Mint Juleps. I'm not a particularly big fan of them all the time, but there's something about the South in the spring that the drink just fits in.

If I'm at Henley and the sun is out (something extremely rare, in my experience), there is nothing better than a Pimms. If it's raining Henley is not nearly as fun. Henley can be a wild time and the liquor starts flowing at 10 AM. Pimms for whatever reason is fantastic there, I haven't found a good Pimms cup anywhere else.

The south of France I love to drink the wine there, even €5 house wine at most places tends to be not bad. It's something about the atmosphere and being there that it is just fantastic. Also, the pairings with the cuisine are perfect.

Everywhere has their domestic/local drink of choice. You can have whatever you want in your local dive, but if you're traveling, or even going to a different bar in your hometown that has specialty, try something new. You'll be surprised.

I am the same way. However, I have one Mint Julep a year. Thats all I need to remind me of how bad they are (lol). I had some of the best wine in my life from a bottle with no label while I was in Sicily. I had some of the most toxic alcohol of my life in Japan and Korea (soju, anyone?)

My standards: Johnny Walker Black with a splash of soda. Or an "Alcatraz" - Jameson 'on the rock' (with one ice cube).

At a nice dinner: Old scotch with a splash of soda.

Or if they have it, Pappy Van Winkle with one ice cube.

Seasonal:

In the summer, sometimes I'll get a Singapore Sling with a side of Mezcal. (hat-tip Hunter S. Thompson)

If it's cold out I like a Negroni, but only if my homeboy Mauricio is making it.

I have to say, the older I get, the less I am enjoying drinking and I am having soda water with a lime more often than not.

For Ryes either of the two I mentioned above are excellent. Both are inexpensive at 40 or less a bottle and the Wild Turkey is common enough to find at most liquor stores although not many bars carry their Rye.

Rye 1 or Bulleit make decent substitutes if you're at the bars.

DVY gave me the great idea of sushi and sake for first dates. Based on alcohol content, sake is half the price of mixed drinks, and the sushi gives you plausible deniability, while also being low in calories for maximum alcohol impact. Two little pitchers of sake, $20, 20 oz, goes down easy, with a roll or two of sushi. Bitches love sushi.

I've never tried a Moscow Mule, do most American bartenders know how to make them? I looked it up and it says the mixer is ginger beer(which I absolutely love btw). I don't think most bars carry ginger beer, do they substitute with ginger ale?

Also, how do you guys fare mixing liquor and beer? Sometimes it gives me an upset stomach and I have to sip really slow. I don't know why, but even drinking just two beers makes my stomach feel full and nasty.

The quote perfectly summarizes why I drink. It's not to get drunk it's because it's enjoyable. I find drunkeness a distasteful side effect.
