He's worth $100 million and just impregnanted one of the hottest females on the planet.

Seems pretty dignified to me.

I don't care how hot she it. She's a trashy whore.

Lol what? Jay-Z is more popular than he is.

^^^ And what about this guy?

No way, Jay Z is not even close to cracking the top ten. He's a big deal, sure, but that's almost solely due to his marriage to Beyoncé (who isn't in the top ten either, despite how badly the media wishes she was the "Queen") and his entrepreneurship ventures.

Michael Jackson was the previous king of pop, that is indisputable. But that was when people bought albums, now people only buy digital singles and/or stream the songs they like. And Kanye even has Bieber beat by a solid ten million.

See here for details.

Anyone thinking Kanye trumps Jay the guy whom Kanye himself says is a big brother to him come the fuck on. 90s and early 2000s Jay was balling on amazing amounts of sold albums. Thing is now he makes most of his money running Def Jam that have artists like Kanye and Ludacris under him.

I just supplied an objective metric by which Kanye does indeed top Jay Z. I'm not saying that Kanye is superior to Jay Z in every single way, I don't believe that at all. For one thing Jay Z has a lot more money than Kanye.

Also Jay and Ye share an equal billing as the only two artists currently signed to Roc-A-Fella Records. Jay does not currently run Def Jam. I think you're confusing that with Roc Nation, which is a very impressive business.

Like Jay said on the remix to Kanye's "Diamonds from Sierra Leone":

"I'm not a businessman, I'm a business, man!"

Which he undoubtably is, and he's one of the greatest rappers ever as well. But he's not as popular as Kanye, sorry.

Jay is definitely not as popular as Kanye at this juncture. Does Jay-Z even still make albums? That doesn't mean Kanye is better, but I think Jay-z knows that his time as a rapper is up, but he used that time to springboard himself into a multitude of profitable business ventures.

Eventually the same thing will happen to Kanye, so it's all good.

I will be checking my PMs weekly, so you can catch me there. I will not be posting.

The last Jay Z album that I really liked was American Gangster from back in 2007. The production was incredible and Jay actually sounded energetic on the mic. I also enjoyed Watch the Throne, but that's much closer to being a Kanye West album than Hov's, even if they're both technically executive producers on it. The Blueprint 3 was so soft that I couldn't take it seriously and for me Magna Carta Holy Grail is tied with Kingdom Come as Hov's most boring album. It felt like an advertisement for Samsung, while that year Kanye released Yeezus, one of the most challenging and abrasive pop albums ever made. And Kanye's album before that was My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which (for me) is the greatest album, period. I think Kanye's upcoming album (now retitled SWISH) might be his last, he seems much more interested in fashion than music at this point. But he's going to retire with one of the most acclaimed discographies in the history of music.

Haha, I may have to eat my words: they both put out albums in 2013.

The reason I would say Kanye is more popular, though, is because of the number of young people who actively talk about him. As lame as it is, your popularity is directly proportional to the number of people in their late teens and early twenties who actively spectate your shenanigans.

Using your same link on the RIAA site, Jay Z has sold 29 million units total. He is even on the first page of that metric. Kanye is not even listed on any page, and this list is like 5-6 pages deep. Even Bone Thugs and Harmony are listed. Just from eyeballing, Jay Z, 2 Pac, and Eminem are the only rappers on the first page of that metric. I did not even need to click on the RIAA page to know that Kayne would not even be close to either one of these 3. Digital analog or otherwise.

I'm not going to say that automatically makes Jay Z more popular than Kayne, but that digital sales record listing is not inclusive enough for you to make that assumption either.

*Wiz Khalifa voice* Hold up, hold up, hold up. I get that page is convenient for your arguement but I still disagree.

That page is only for singles. Not albums. Also Jay-Z's commercial peak from was 96-2001 which was before the ubiquity of (legal) digitial downloads.

Jay has 12 solo albums(excluding 2 with R. Kelly and 1 with Kayne). Per the RIAA sales on his wiki page he's sold about 25.1 million(I rounded down). Kayne's solo LP's have scanned about 13 million.

Single downloads aren't a better criterion of rapper popularity than albums sales. Let's keep it 100: that's your subjective opinion of an objective metric.

If that chart is to be taken as Gospel, Taylor Swfit is the most popular musician of all time?? More so than the Beetles, Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, etc?
