If I'm a guy who doesn't care about fancy shoes, what is your guys recommendation for like a basic set of a few pairs of shoes?

I just want to meet the threshold of not turning off girls who look at my feet.

To me, $100 dress shoes are expensive but you guys are spending $400+?

Dang I am really ignorant about this stuff

So I'm just going to buy some new shoes on amazon and I want to be cheap..

Amazon has a $20 off $100 promotion
Here is a link to the promotion (just pasted out of my browser, no referral code or anything):
http://www.amazon.com/l/7910522011/ref=a...B004FDRMZE
Rules of the promotion: http://www.amazon.com/gp/promotions/deta...SDG7QFE3WZ
(Make sure to not use 1-click and enter the code HOLPARTY)

Can someone give me some advice on which shoes I should buy? I just need a black pair that goes with a suit I have and then I guess some other pair assuming I spend less than $100 on the first

bacan, do yourself a favor and buy a good quality shoe and take care of it. I have a pair of Aldens that are over 10 years old maybe close to 20. They still look great, I don't wear them as much because I have been dumb enough to get nicks in them over time. But I took care of them and they are an investment. Buy a $100 pair of shoes every year (depending on how often you wear them) or a better shoe that gets re-soled every few years and is of better quality and prestige (if that matters to you).

For respectability and decent build quality, at a minimum, get a pair of Allen Edmonds. Nordstrom is having a sale right now on some. Or go to Nordstrom Rack, you can ge AEs for around $150. Or look on ebay AE sells there sometimes (tiny unnoticable issues usually).

Or go to Styleforum.net - guys there are often selling new shoes that they got somehow (legit).

AE would be the minimum, in my opinion. Other shoes wear out fast.

Get a leather sole some AE are rubber - which I don't think allows for re-soling. http://www.allenedmonds.com/aeonline/Rec...0000000001

I've had the shittiest luck with Aldo, always been uncomfortable for me and they'd fall apart. Same with Steve Madden. The prices and styles are beast.

I've had 2 pairs of these Aldo shoes
http://www.aldoshoes.com/us/men/shoes/dr...aughorn/97

I'm done with Aldo. They are comfortable but they don't last long at all.

I'm looking for a quality shoe that looks about like that. Any ideas?

These are the Aldos right??

Quality isn't cheap, got a price range?
$250ish
I don't wear them a ton as I love wearing my western boots(gives me an inch of height or so)
I really need some for NYE and may go buy some tomorrow.

Thanks! The KC shoes are actually more my style. The Eccos look a little bulky and the HB shoes look good, but just a little too narrow at the toes.
I am in Dallas until the day after NYE then I'm back in West Tx for another few weeks.
I have a date tonight so I may swing by there today.

No prob, let me know if you want more options. Although, your best bet is going to be seeing what they have in stock near you

I've purchased 5 pairs this month: 2 pairs of Mark Nason boots; a pair of Mark Nason loafers; a pair of Magnanni loafers; and a pair of cognac Magnanni Oxford wingtips. I think I have a shoe/boot addiction now. Being a size 15, I'm surprised I'm able to find my size being made by these fine shoe-makers. I want one more pair of boots, which is a pair of Allen Edmonds Oxford wingtip boots in distressed-looking leather. Beautiful looking.

I'm on a budget for now until I finish paying my bills off. I like square toed for my dressier jeans. They look better to me. Just never been a fan of round toe with jeans. If I wore dress pants more I'd get round toe.
I usually wear my boots everywhere anyway so I don't need to spend a ton on shoes.

Thanks guys! I appreciate it.

I am embarrassed to say it but all I have in my formal shoe collection at the moment are square-toed brown shoes, which just today I found out today make me look like a clown (at least according to 45% of the readers of this gothamist post http://gothamist.com/2012/07/12/should_e...oed_sh.php) and some cheap target shoes that I drunkenly ruined during my travels. Now you can see little spots where the fake leather was ripped off and the whitish material below shows through.

I wonder how many girls I've banged in spite of their disgust with my complete ignorance of style and how many will be available to me in the future that were currently out of my reach in the past due to my poor style.

I need a step by step tutorial or online learning course that I can follow just to learn the basics of style and clothing and fashion in order to reach a point where I'm not actively turning off girls with my stuff I wear.

The funny thing is this whole thing is kind of encouraging because I'm obviously doing something right with my results with game so far. It makes me think I'm not yet close to reaching my potential.

Today I just purchased recommendations from both of you guys.

Samsamsam, I bought http://www.ralphlauren.com/product/index...n=16719889 for $45 + $5 shipping

Lothario, I just bought http://www.dsw.com/shoe/j.d.+fisk+double...Ref=SEARCH with free shipping after signing up for a DSW account

Still need to figure out what brown dress shoes to buy. Lothario, the ones you recommended have all those holes (broguing?). Is that style of shoe good for guys in their late 20s?

bacan, at the end of the day you take the advice that works for you/makes sense for you. I hope none of the advice given by anyone comes off like a mandate. No one ever gets the true situation through a few pixels on a computer monitor (well at least most of the time - there are a few guys here that write like you are in the room with them - but sadly I don't have that talent).

Plenty of guys have gotten laid with square shoes. I think I have a pair in my closet somewhere that got me some action. But I am donating it to Goodwill when I go through my cleaning today. [Image: smile.gif]

Aldo's are crap. I've never had a pair last over a year and the poor construction makes them difficult for a cobbler to do a proper repair.

I've had good luck with Eccos and I have a pair of Adam Derricks that I'm loving so far. The Adam Derricks got the crap beat out of them on a recent trip and my local cobbler was able to rehab them completely. Get a good pair of shoes and they will last decades. A quick tell is to see if the sole of the shoe is stitched or glued. If it's glued give the shoe a pass.

Bacan, wear square toes if you like it. Wear white after labor day is you want. Hell, grow a soul patch even if you're White.

Break the "rules."

Haha no, no risk of anything coming off as a mandate. I am completely ignorant about everything shoes-related so I'm just soaking up info like a sponge. I wanted to show that I bought those shoes because everyone likes seeing proof that people value and use their advice.

That brand you posted in your first post -- the shoes on that site are hundreds of dollars, right? And $125+ to fix them too. Very interesting. Considering I probably spent $50 for three months use out of target shoes, I can see the value in spending more on higher quality shoes.

On the other hand, I still am a crazy guy and wonder if I would ruin expensive shoes by being an idiot/drunk/backpacker etc.

FYI, here's a good resource I found by chatting with a DSW shoe lover during my order and asking for resources on men's shoes. She said this is a good way to keep up with what is trending:

Here is a piece of gold I figured out for myself this year --

Good shoe polish = $$$

Polished up some mediocre 3 year old pair of dress shoes from Saks 5th Ave I picked up for $400, and they get more complements than the $4k made to measure suit I'm wearing. Before the magic polish it was the other way around.

All you need to know here: http://www.hangerproject.com/shoe-care-g...ine-guide/

The trick involves multiple layers of cleaner, cream, and wax, matching your shoe color exactly.

Do you guys have any suggestions on good, affordable "school shoes?" Something I can pull off wearing to classes while not looking like a tool, but it still stands out. My wardrobe doesn't have many "neutral" casual shoes lol.
