Let's talk shoes

I picked up a pair of Crockett & Jones shoes while I was in NYC last week. Easily the best pair of shoes I have ever worn. Also, in my opinion, looked a lot nicer than the ferragamos that cost twice as much. I regretfully didn't go into the john lobb store, but Crockett & Jones is high quality footwear at a "reasonable" price. I also saved on tax by having them shipped to Minnesota.

Let's talk shoes

I have been meaning to do a write up on handmade, custom shoes for a while now.

Last spring while back in Sweden I had a pair of black leather Chukka style boots made. I know Sweden is not the first place one thinks of when talking handmade, custom shoes, but keep in mind I have been on the lookout for the perfect pair of chukkas for some time. I found them in Sweden.

The first step was coming to terms with the price. They were not cheap, but also not that expensive considering. I have a pair of handmade, Custom Grade English Church's that were the same price as these custom boots. Its all relative.

I established a bit of a relationship with the shoe maker. You have to. He is making a shoe based on your feet. After some measuring and checking for foot oddities (bunions, etc) he finds a last that works for your foot.

From there he does his thing. He never asked me whether I wanted a Goodyear welt, but this is assumed with high end shoes as it allows the easy replacement of soles over the years. It was actually wild to see how "shitty" the shoes look as the leather is worked and worked over the sole and pinned in place and such. Its almost miraculous the way a shoe turns out after seeing a shoe at this stage.

My boots are for winter so I had a tough decision to make. I love the sound of a solid wood heel and the feel of leather against the cobbles, but for winter its just not practical. So I got him to top the wood on the heel with rubber, and also put on a Toppy. I almost cried when the silky smooth, mahogany like leather of the sole was scraped away for a Toppy.

When they were done, I went in for a fitting. This was almost just a formality, as they fit perfect from the first moment. I snugged up the laces, bought some Cedar shoes trees, and left the store wearing them. My girl and I walked around all day, and hit the town that night. My feet did not even have the slightest bit of discomfort.

Here we are, 6 months later and the beginning of another winter. These shoes, my first custom pair ever, still put a smile on my face.

If I'm a guy who doesn't care about fancy shoes, what is your guys recommendation for like a basic set of a few pairs of shoes?

I just want to meet the threshold of not turning off girls who look at my feet.

To me, $100 dress shoes are expensive but you guys are spending $400+?

Dang I am really ignorant about this stuff

Style rule 101 for shoes.

If they retail for $250 that's the low end of what you can buy to have a quality shoe that will last 5-10 years.

Now if you really want to get a budget breaker shoe you need to go shoe shopping during nordstrom's half annual sale, luck on a cyber Monday/Black Friday sale.

Then you can find shoes normally in the $250-350 range for $199.

If you buy dress shoes and spend less than $200-250 they won't last very long, 2-3 years max, so it actually costs more to get low end shoes.

Finally, if you want a starter pair of shoes, brown brogues are clean or get wingtips. Don't get black for your first pair of high end shoes.

Curious - as someone less versed on this topic...

I see a lot of dress shoesm which look great, but what would wear with a t-shirt and jeans? Assume good dark jeans, and a shirt that looks good with some kind of character.

Right now, I've been looking at new shoes and am considering something like converse or true religion's version of those to wear when I'm dressing casual. Thoughts?

Jeans with dress shoes typically work provided that the shoes aren't too dressy.

The more dainty a shoe looks the less it should be paired with jeans.

That being said I ran into a Japanese cat with cognac colored whole cut dress shoes with j-style Levi's. It worked on him, but on me, I'd feel awkward.

With most style, the effect on you is more important than effects on 3rd parties.

Trust me, spend the money on one pair of good shoes. Lots of examples of good quality shoes on this thread.

I wear Jeffery West shoes, they are made with Goodyear welts mentioned earlier. They run me around £250.

So I'm just going to buy some new shoes on amazon and I want to be cheap..

Amazon has a $20 off $100 promotion
Here is a link to the promotion (just pasted out of my browser, no referral code or anything):
http://www.amazon.com/l/7910522011/ref=a...B004FDRMZE
Rules of the promotion: http://www.amazon.com/gp/promotions/deta...SDG7QFE3WZ
(Make sure to not use 1-click and enter the code HOLPARTY)

Can someone give me some advice on which shoes I should buy? I just need a black pair that goes with a suit I have and then I guess some other pair assuming I spend less than $100 on the first

If tight on Budget do look on E-bay, it's a slow hunting process but you can build a good shoe collection for much less.

Also if there is a DSW Shoe Store close to you and straight to the clearence section, they recently marked down the boots to 30-40 % off , you won't find them online but just in stores.

Personally I hate shopping for shoes. Largely because I'm a size 15, and I tend to destroy shoes rather quickly.

And none of these brands cater to larger feet.

I approve of this message!
Only shoes I've bought in years, besides a pair of sneakers for working out, have been combat boots, work boots, motorcycle boots... Functional, ruggedly masculine, and they only look cooler as they get more beat up and worn in.

$300-350 generally my minimum price point (original price). I would not buy a dress shoe for less than $250. Although I have seen some amazing Dolce & Gabbana wingtips for $675 at Nordstrom, I could not convince myself to pull the trigger.

I'm with ya on the trouble finding wide. 15EE here. I usually just go to zappos and search by size. Find what I want then search other sites for the best price.

Grabbed these Mark Nason boots off eBay for $72 shipped. Not sure if they are real or knockoff as they are a bit flimsy and light, but they are great so far. Comfortable and somewhat unique looking.

I've had the shittiest luck with Aldo, always been uncomfortable for me and they'd fall apart. Same with Steve Madden. The prices and styles are beast.

I'm done with Aldo. They are comfortable but they don't last long at all.

I'm looking for a quality shoe that looks about like that. Any ideas?
