The No-Shampoo Challenge

Anybody here doing this with the kink type hair? Any brothers on this challenge also? I would like to hear other fellow brothers whom have similar hair types how they are doing.

Its like I am not seeing any magical changes with my hair. It feels more bristly and stronger for sure, but its not any softer. I am now trying to put in less oil back into my hair to see what difference I get.

For my white brothers your hair type will pump out a good amount of oil, for us kink haired brothers we have to put oil/moisture into are hair as its dry. I noticed off the bat that putting oil in my hair like I used too was bad news, as it gave me issues with my skin, etc.

I have to find a balance of no chemicals while still being able to get moisture back into my hair some-how, I am going to experiment with glycerine to see if it helps down the road.

Several years ago I started cutting down on shampoo drastically to once or twice a week because I read somewhere it's a bunch of chemicals that are unnecessary. The conditioner helped keep my hair really soft, and I used shampoo maybe once a week for many years before kicking the habit altogether.

I don't use shampoo or conditioner now, and my hair is probably not as soft as it was (I've got very thick hair) but it is still soft to the touch. I have found no real consequences to dropping shampoo and conditioner, and the benefit is it saves me a few minutes and a few dollars in the morning.

Going to bump once, hopefully someone with a similar issue as me sees this, anyone here who uses gel/wax religiously try this challenge?

I'm gonna do it anyway since I trust Samseau but wtf do I do about styling w/o wax?

Wc-

What kind of hair gel?

I used to use hair glue but I've been using this (or a similar product) for the past year or two.

I still use it even even though my hair can stay styled without it.(kind of)

By the the way, my hand was covered in coconut oil.

Thanks, what's your routine and what is that stuff? Can you PM the product name to me or just write it here?

I use the same stuff (glue) so similar situation. Basically my hair looks like shit dry but I'll do this anyway to see how it works. Nothing to lose.

I let my hair dry for about five minutes after Taking my morning shower before I scoop a small amount of the wax out with a finger and apply it to my hair.

The product is called BedHead Matte Separation Workable Wax. It's not a super strong hold, but it keeps mine in place throughout the day while also giving my hair a slight sheen.

I don't have a set routine for coconut oil and baking soda. If my scalp gets itchy, then I'll put the stuff in and it seems to takes care of the problem for a while.

Going to try this formula, don't know what essential oils is but I'll hit up a girly product shop near by and find out. My bs line about wanting to find essential oils will actually be legit.

I'd say the essential oils are probably the ones that your hair produces naturally.. Coconut oil will serve this purpose fine

Essential oils are usually oils that contain the aroma or essence of a plant, herb, fruit, etc. like tea tree or lemon oil. They are very concentrated.

Been shampoo free a couple of months now and loving it. Saves money and hair looks better.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

That's a good one. A new product I've been using that I recommend is Molding Clay from American Crew. It's excellent if you're looking to achieve a strong hold with nice shine.

I'm approximately 20 days into this. and see no need of turning back.

Used baking soda only 2 times, the first one after 6 days due to excess grease and 3 days ago after going to the beach and getting sticky hair. It cleaned the hair but did not solve the problem completely, so today i used a bit of coconut oil. And it is perfect and smells naturally nice. It's shiny but i think I'm still having withdrawal symptoms, because i note more hairs falling/braking. perhaps i'm being paranoid about my hair, since i love it very much.

I think it is important to note that where I am now it is very very warm and I also workout, so generally i take 2-3 showers per day.

My mom, brother and friends think I'm crazy. My grandmother also is a baking soda devotee (thank you doctor Oz). I think my hair looks great. I have it a bit big now, and i don't look like an idiot now after it dries up. It is easier to mold and stays almost in place without the use of waxes/gels. In a few days I'm going to get a haircut, and continue without shampoo to check the differences.

So far so good. Actively recommended!

Easy, stop putting that shit into your hair. It's outdated and looks 90's/00's anyways. Go au naturel.

^ my hair is frizzy. It looks like crap otherwise. Still doing it natural, as of now I am using coconut oil to give it a sheen (still doesn't look great).

As others have mentioned, it's so easy to style your hair when it's all natural oils. Use water for 2/3 days only and you'll see.

So two months in now I guess and my hair is fairing better. It's crazy strong now and I can no longer pull out strains of hair anymore, also it has become way thicker and bristly. What I have charged is just I have used less Baking Soda, less Coconut oil, less everything. I use Baking Soda once a week if that, I don't think my hair smells off or anything, it has no odor of dirtiness it just is more greasy.

My hair has gotten a little softer but far of the softness of when product is used. I'm still thinking glycerine is the game changer and will incorporate that when I get some more cash. My skin, well it's gotten a bit better but I need to keep on with exfoliation to make sure dirty does not get clogged in the pores. Simple soap and a good wash twice-three times a day isn't enough.

Congrats, you're entering the late stages now. This is when the hard work of no-shampoo pays off. Now your hair stands out of the crowd. Now you can take a three hour nap, roll out of bed and just pat your hair gently and it looks like you just took a shower. Go out and enjoy.

Can I ask what kind of hair you guys have? Does this only work for straight/slightly curly hair?

My hair is curly/wavy and annoyingly flicks outwards. Not so much anymore though when it's all natural.

Did it take the full two months for that?

I'm on 2-3 weeks and it pretty much does what it wants when it is dry (also when it is wet but not as much).

I haven't done it for 2 months yet so no, only a few days. Maybe 4/5 with only water.

I just went through the entire thread so a lot of the questions were answered but I still have a few more questions. Any help here would be appreciated:

I saw WC and somebody else talk about gel in their hair. I need hair in my gel too otherwise it just looks like crap. I need some styling. If you use gel, do you just wash it without shampoo. I would think that shampoo is better to washout the gel, no? I know Samseau said it's better not to use any and I agree because those chemicals can't be good for your scalp but really without it my hair can't by styled at all.

Regarding the no soap thing, are body washes more recommended? I am using Old Spice body washes which smell very nice and don't leave my skin dry after the shower. Is that better than using soap? When I do use soap I only use Dove which is more moisturizing than your average soap.

I really wanna get into the no shampoo thing as I feel my hair thinning but the gel thing is holing me back. I can't go out without applying gel. I think the no shampoo thing maybe able to help with the hair thinning/eventual balding.

Another thing that I have though of is instead of using gel, is it advisable to use small amounts of coconut oil for example to style your hair? Thanks.

As a quick update on this one here. I have seen a slight upgrade in my hair in terms of texture.

1) my scalp no longer itches
2) my hair has become stronger, as mentioned by another it stands up straight out of bed
3) I changed to an all organic gel once and a while "Aubrey's organics - men's biotin hair gel"

Overall didnt see a significant change over the last month or so, a slight upgrade, but no reason to go back to using shampoo since shampoo makes a slightly negative impact.

Overall decent results, net positive.
