The No-Shampoo Challenge

Once a day. Only been doing this for a few days now, though. Longer sample time is necessary before I make any final judgement. Definitely going to continue at this stage, though.

remember that one of the objectives of no shampooing is to stop throwing chemicals at your head and hair. i don't know exactly of what baby powder consists, but im sure there's some shit in there.
Understood, but I figured baby powder couldn't be much worse for your hair than baking soda, vinegar, coconut oil, etc - other stuff that people are using in this thread.

Talc by itself probably wouldn't be too bad, but a lot have perfume, at the very least

Not sure if I mentioned already, but my hair can by molded and shaped in so many ways after I shower with just water nowadays.

I've probably been shampoo free for 2 months. Most if not all the head on my hair are shampoo virgins. Chastity for life.

On a more serious note, and I can't stress it enough, this has been an amazing change for me.

I have been doing this since I found the nopoo thread in misc in February 2012. For about 8 weeks my hair was much greasier, but then it stabilized at maybe 15% more grease than I had when I shampooed, which gave it nice flowing shine. It is now much easier, less time-consuming, and cheaper to care for since I don't have to buy and cleaners, conditioners, or shaping product. I just massage my scalp and pull the sebum through my hair to condition it when I shower, and it can be blow dried into any shape I want. The results look and feel better than they did with any product previously. One of the best things I have ever tried. I will never use shampoo again.

Hand full of baking soda, mixed with just enough water to make it a paste, lathered through wet hair, then oil (has coconut oil in it, I'd probably just go with that, given the option) is applied to hair, and, finally, rinse/massage it all out together. Hair feels, looks, and even smells pretty good, already. Note: I have mid length, curley, hair, and this method seems to be keeping it more manageable. Definitely going to continue this experiment

You may be using too much baking soda. I literally use a dime size, sometimes less!

This works. I've done this for 3 months and my dry scalp condition is gone.

Mixed with the other oil, I think it's about the right amount, but I also use it to clean my armpits and ballsack, so not all of it is going straight onto my head (and some obviously gets wasted)

I did this for roughly 2 months with no success. I stopped now.

When I did it, I started off shampooing every week, then every 2 weeks, then went 2 months with no shampoo. My hair did not look any better. It became itchy and I know if you touch your hair constantly, it is not good for it and I was kind of forced into doing this a lot when the itching became so necessary.

I stopped using shampoo for three days and noticed my hair looked better after shower. It was easier to comb/style, but today with the habit, I used shampoo without even hinking. However, i felt a bit greasy.. the 30ºC temperature didn't help. Tomorrow, no shampoo for me.

Did you use a scalp brush, shower two times or more per day? Instead of tapering off the shampoo, taper off using a conditioner to deal with the initial smell and oilyness. Then dust any remaining itchy areas with baking soda as needed, coco oil before bed once a week and you should be gtg - the scalp brush will help your itchy head.

I have been on this program for over a year.

Sometimes it needs to be washed with shampoo, like when I am working in the garage and i lay down in a puddle of gear oil...or after I have been traveling and camping through Mongolia for a week. And these shampoo sessions are followed up with coconut oil.

In fact, those are the only two times in recent memory that I recall putting shampoo in my hair. The first was a while ago, the second was about 2 weeks ago.

Bishes can't keep their hands out of my hair... When they ask what product I use, I simply tell them it is a secret.

The baking soda and coconut oil wash, which I've been doing for 3 days and going to do for another 2 is working an absolute treat for my scalp.

First day there were flakes still, but not as many.

Second day there were even fewer.

Today, there's none.

You are not doing the no-shampoo challenge... you've created your own shampoo! [Image: lol.gif]

Whatever man, if it works for you then great. It's not that I have some kind of hate towards shampoo, but that what worked best for me was not using any product whatsoever. But if your homemade product looks best for you, then go for it.

It's all about being a god-damn good looking man.

Ha, it's not real shampoo though!

Nah, I'm only doing it today and tomorrow then going to go back to just water as I preferred that look and feel. I had to get the scalp under control first. My hair is looking a lot better though using the baking soda and coconut oil combo.

I have been doing it for 3 weeks now washing with nothing but hot water. My hair feels softer but strangely seems to give me the appearance of having blonde highlights. Hoping to continue for an extended period of time but since i'm going to Glastonbury this week i imagine it will need a thorough wash when i return.

Yesterday, I tried the skills of a new barber because I'm looking for another type of haircut and the guy was pretty exited when I told him I wasn't using any shampoo. He even called all his girls over in order to look at my awesome hair.

I'm on day 4 or 5. My hair is greasy as shit. A girl ran her hands through my hair last night and said, "eww what the fuck do you put in your hair WD 40!?"

I laughed it off and said, "nah I'm doing the no shampoo challenge."

But still. How long til my hair isn't greasy like this?

I'm about 4 or 5 weeks in.

Decided to quit shampoo because my hair always looked like shit. My hair is (or was, when I quit) very oily.

The first few days were hell: all I could think about was washing my hair asap. I also got really bad dandruff, which was not encouraging at all to keep going. Still, I haven't given in.

My regimen is washing my hair everyday with water, preferably cold.

A few days in, my hair and scalp started feeling very dirty and block-ish, as I have curly hair. I tried used baking soda. It kind of worked, felt cleaner, but the dandruff continued.

Days later I used ACV. Same result.

Yesterday I tried Kosko's coconut oil recipe mentioned above. Seems like I had much less flaking today. It's still very early to see if it will be better with the oil, but I'll keep you informed. Also gonna experiment with not washing it all for a few days to see what happens.
So far I've tried:
- baking soda
- ACV
- coconut oil
- not washing hair at all, even with water

The best look is when I use coconut oil.

However, my dandruff problem still persists. It sucks having to make sure none of it is on your shoulders and I'm getting tired of seeing no improvement.

I don't want to go back to regular shampoo and I think it is quite clear by now that hair can (and most likely will) look better without shampoo, but what "natural" suggestion do you have to treat Seborrhoeic dermatitis?

Isn't dandruff caused by an imbalanced skin environment which causes certain usually harmless fungi to grow excessively? If so, you should intensify your treatment with coconut oil since it has anti-fungal properties and just give your scalp more time to "heal".

Samseau, how often do you use baking soda?

I've gone 3 days now with water only and it's still going strong. It may be a little greasy tomorrow, but no major problems so far compared to when I last went this long with water only.

I use baking soda about one a week sometimes even less and I only use a small amount each time. Aside from the better appearance and sculpting ability of your hair after not using shampoo the big advantage is the reduced cost. A container of baking soda costs much less than a bottle of shampoo but it lasts about three times longer than an average bottle of shampoo and has many more uses.

I just started this. Now I shave my head bald wit ha razor blade, gillete to be exact.. I am not going as good. After 2 days, I started getting severe dandruff becuase I was not using the shampoo to hydrate the hair.

I was thinking of applying sorbolene, but that would defeat the purpose of the no shampoo challenge.

What should I do ?

Coconut oil.
