What's the best way to apply the baking soda? Do you make a paste out of it with water or just sprinkle some into your hand and throw it on?

Make a paste of about 1 part baking soda to 3/4 parts water. Experiment and find what works best for you.

I'm about 4 or 5 weeks in.

Decided to quit shampoo because my hair always looked like shit. My hair is (or was, when I quit) very oily.

The first few days were hell: all I could think about was washing my hair asap. I also got really bad dandruff, which was not encouraging at all to keep going. Still, I haven't given in.

My regimen is washing my hair everyday with water, preferably cold.

A few days in, my hair and scalp started feeling very dirty and block-ish, as I have curly hair. I tried used baking soda. It kind of worked, felt cleaner, but the dandruff continued.

Days later I used ACV. Same result.

Yesterday I tried Kosko's coconut oil recipe mentioned above. Seems like I had much less flaking today. It's still very early to see if it will be better with the oil, but I'll keep you informed. Also gonna experiment with not washing it all for a few days to see what happens.

How is it now mate?

No shampoo, no nothing for 8-9 months here. Quite oily in the beginning, but it went over quickly and has been fine ever since. I was originally annoyed that every time I shampooed my hair it looked dry, thin, and flat for 2 days. On day 3-4 it was already too oily, and I had to shampoo it again, giving me 1-2 days of good looking hair every 4-day cycle.

Now I shower and my hair looks great as soon as it dries. No styling products needed. I tried once before, but had to give up because it itched too much. The solution was to rub my scalp with my fingers in the shower. Apparently the mechanical friction was all the maintenance I needed. My hair is wavy and medium-long length.

I did the no shampoo challenge for two weeks.

It was good but my hair got very dry and my scalp was itchy. I used baking soda a couple of times.

Begrudgingly I went back to shampoo cos it just itched too much. Thoughts?

I haven't used shampoo for a week. The past 3 days my scalp has been dry and flaking. I'm putting some coconut oil on it and my mate's girlfriend said to leave it on overnight. I'll probably put it on every other day to keep my scalp moisturised.

The No-Shampoo Challenge

It took me three separate attempts before my hair really normalised. First time for three months, was still too oily so I went back on shampoo. Second time lasted about six weeks before I gave up. Baking soda did nothing for me, either. Third time, my hair came good much more quickly, after a couple of weeks. Since then my hair has never been better.

So for you guys that try it for a week or two, that's nothing. You have to stick this one out.

4 weeks on still going strong...got a haircut and hair feels softer and better now, less dandruff than I used to have.

The baking soda works like a charm as deodorant as well...almost unreal...with deodorant I would come home and my undershirt armpits who sort of stink...now...nothing!!!

What I did was to stop using shampoo but continue to use conditioner for the first ten days. This kept the itchiness and smell down, after that I stopped conditioner and used baking soda before showering and coconut oil to condition at night. Haven't used baking soda in a week, no itchiness or smell. Are you using a scalp brush?

edit: the conditioner is some kind of 'organic' type made with hemp. Shower 2 - 3x / day

My scalp is slowly getting better. I read a few reviews regarding coconut oil for scalp treatment and they said it can take a week or so before it really kicks in, but I have noticed the flakiness decreasing over the past couple of days. It's really annoying me.

The No-Shampoo Challenge

I started on the no-shampoo challenge about 4 weeks ago after reading Samseau's RoK article. I think my mop finally turned a corner, but the previous month had its share of weirdness. I've used Head and Shoulders dry scalp care almost everyday for years, so I experienced some intense itchiness around week 3. I got around this by applying apple cider vinegar directly to my dome, but at one point last weekend I broke down and threw some Head and Shoulders on the really bothersome spots near the back of my head. It had to be done.

One trick that I found helpful was to sprinkle some baby powder in my hair every few days before going to bed. An ex-gf used to do this and claimed it acted as a dry shampoo. The powder seems to eliminate excess grease buildup once it's rinsed out, and it leaves your hair soft and smelling nice. I'd recommend it.

remember that one of the objectives of no shampooing is to stop throwing chemicals at your head and hair. i don't know exactly of what baby powder consists, but im sure there's some shit in there.

I stopped using shampoo after I read a book by a well known NYC pick up artist (forgot his name). He prefers the au natural feel and doesn't shampoo his hair only using just a tiny amount of conditioner.

Hasn't really been any better or any worse. When I used to go to salons, hair dressers loved how soft my hair was. My barber says I should be good on my hair until my 40s or 50s.

Pretty happy with that [Image: smile.gif]

This challenge is fucking with my face. It's been breaking out from all the extra grease swirling around my head.

I have two weeks left in the challenge, I will judge what my hair looks like when I get next cut on Monday.

Have you tried washing it with hot water? That helps in my case. I always wash my hair vigorously under hot water and then wash my greasy hands with soap.

Washed my hair with baking soda and some body moisturizing oil the last couple of days. Looked great, and the dandruff that I've been noticing lately hasn't appeared yet

What did you do, mix it together in a paste? Good to know.

Hand full of baking soda, mixed with just enough water to make it a paste, lathered through wet hair, then oil (has coconut oil in it, I'd probably just go with that, given the option) is applied to hair, and, finally, rinse/massage it all out together. Hair feels, looks, and even smells pretty good, already. Note: I have mid length, curley, hair, and this method seems to be keeping it more manageable. Definitely going to continue this experiment
