So i just arrived in Koh Samui. I'm staying in Chaweng Beach. I went out last night to the Green Mango Club and the surrounding bars and the nightlife SUCKS!
The ratio is about 3 guys to every girl. The girls are mostly australian girls, many of them fat and sloppy. I was hoping for a good supply of Russian girls, but I saw none last night. There was a small number of Thai girls, but they were all clearly working girls (sitting alone at a table smiling at every guy, trying to get a customer). I saw no normal Thai girls, and very few Thais overall.
Also, whats up with Australian guys? There were a lot of tall, buff, tanned, good looking Australian guys out last night, but they seemed to be there "just to dance". They were dancing alone or with their guy friends. Many of them had their shirts off or were wearing tank tops. I didn't see them trying to hit on girls. They were just dancing, and they were really into it. And whats up with the fashion in Australia? Lots of guys were wearing shorts that ended 6 inches or more above their knees. And hot colors were common: hot orange, hot pink. I swear it almost looked like a scene from a gay club!
Anyway, at this point I am very disappointed in Koh Samui night life. I was hoping to have a good supply of Russian and Scandinavian girls to hit on, and some non-pro Thai girls too. But there is none of that. The game situation is absolutely horrendous here.
I need suggestions from ya'll. Am I at the wrong beach? Or going to the wrong clubs? The islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are close by, those any better? Where are all the Russian girls I've been reading about? What about normal Thai girl, where are they? What the fuck is going on, this place got some good reviews from some of the people on this forum.
I don't remember anyone promoting Koh Samui as a good place for clubbing or girls. I know I personally have advised on people here to stay out of Chaweng - it's a real shithole. Green Mango street can be alright in the high season, but it's still always going to be a seedy vibe there with lots of tourists.
Koh Samui is not a place to go if you're expecting a great nightlife. If you like mellowing out in the more chill beach bars and lounging on the beach during the day it can be cool. I lived there for 5 months, and I enjoyed myself, but I wouldn't recommend it as a living destination, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it as a great place to get pussy.
I'd say all but a small handful of women I banged in Koh Samui were prostitutes who gave it up for free. It's a tourist island, not a cosmopolitan area.
If you do want to pull some regular girls, you can work on some of the ones who work regular jobs - restaurants, mall, hair salons, etc - but if you're there for a short time, what's the point? Just going to get her hopes up for nothing. If you're going to be there for a while, the high-quality, somewhat-educated women are found working at the island's resorts.
I personally liked Lamai more than Chaweng, even though it's largely a red-light district area. The after-hours clubs can be pretty good. All the local bar workers go to these places after they get off work, and it can be off the hook, if you don't mind Thai pop music.
I even remember sitting back smoking a hookah with a prostitute on each knee, fingerbanging one and making out with the other. Only advisable in a dark place like that, even with these prostitutes. Make friends with the local musicians if you can - the fruity looking pop stars. These guys are local legends and an all-around crack up to hang with. lol
Also, if you spend some time getting to know a few locals, there are regular mainstream-style clubs on the island, though I know many will say they don't exist. All I can say is I've personally sat in trendy restaurants with bands and full of university-age people, just like you'll find in Chiang Mai. I've also gone to clubs there outside of Chaweng with traditional Thai disco music and I was the only white guy in the place.
You'll find these places everywhere you go in Thailand. You just have to hop on your motorbike and go riding around outside of the touristy areas, and keep your ears peeled for music.
You'll be intimidated going in there alone (and you should just go alone). You'll feel out of place. You'll probably not like the music (at first). But sit through the awkward times, smile, casually flirt with the waitresses, and wait it out. Eventually, a group of Thais will send someone over to your table to break the ice, unless you find a way to break it first.
You're traveling. You have to go find your adventure.
That said, enjoy Koh Samui for what it's worth. Go to the Reggae Bar and dance it up with tourists. act like an idiot at Green Mango. Go shoot pool and whorehouses and laugh with the sluts. Find the after-hour discos and shore some whores. Rent a bike and cruise the palm-covered hills. Eat the hell out of seafood and go swimming in the rain.
It's a tropical island. Keep it simple.
I like Koh Tao a lot better. It's a mellow island with little Thai-farang interaction but plenty of recreational activity and when I was there you had beach raves popping up all the time. Mostly European girls, but who's complaining.
For quality Thai girls, your easiest choice is Bangkok - women are more open-minded there. Chiang Mai is doable but you have to either not care care about shoring whores, again, or have some serious game. Stand-up women in Chiang Mai don't typically fuck foreigners.
Or pick any decent-sized city besides Chiang Mai and Bangkok and settle in for
a while. Again, they've all got a nightlife even if it takes time to find it. And in a lot of them you'll still get those extra points for being a foreigner because many haven't been overrun with us crazy tourists yet.

I skipped Samui totally when I was there in 2010. I remember having a good time on Koh Tao, even though I went specifically for diving I ended up doing quite a bit of partying too. Also, I would suggest the islands on the other coast. Phi Phi Don is great..
From my experience, there isn't an abundance of non-pro girls on the islands because they're so touristy. However, it can be done. I got non-working girl on Phi Phi. The islands were ripe with young, European girls when I was there though...
Again, this is the most important point. Islands are touristy by nature, and unless it's an island with a city on it, most of the locals there are pretty poor and unsophisticated. In Thailand, touristy=prostitutes.

Can you elaborate on the good times you had in Koh Tao? I'm staying at Sairee beach, any suggestions for things to do besides diving, where to go what to see? Thanks
All the good parties on Koh Tao will be in Sairee, though there are sometimes good ones down near Buddha View as well (forget the actual name of that area). Just go down to the beach at night. Or talk with the dive instructors and bartenders to hear when the parties are going down.
The best part about Koh Tao is the isolation, natural beauty, and outdoors activities. Try out free diving, sailing, scuba, etc. Personally, I just love lounging at the beach restaurants and watching the sunset with some good food and beer. Fire dancers and shit. It's a great place to bring a girl.
If you're into the beach party scene, some real good ones do light up there, but no real club scene.
My impression is the local Thais don't really associate with farang there, and the ones that do are almost Westernized because they spend so much time with us (working in scuba shops, etc). They've got our sense of humor and party just like us.
I did make it to a couple local bars but they were pretty country - I've been told there are a lot of shootings at these local spots so keep your head up. It probably wouldn't be your scene there anyways. Just hit the beach parties.

Everyone is always saying how Thailand is the greatest place on earth for girls.
Then when a negative report comes in, everyone is saying it sucks.
What gives?
I remember the same thing happened with me with Latvia. Everyone was saying it was amazing and I needed to get on my first flight there.
Then when I came with some negative reports, everyone started saying "You should have gone to Estonia or Lithuania..."
For every post saying how it's the greatest place on Earth for girls, just as many of us pop in with the occaissional caveat to remind that most guys are hanging out with prostitutes and freelancers. You can tell just by the wording of the posts often.
I personally love Thailand, but I don't fail to recognize its flaws, and it has many. The women are fabulous but most men will sell themselves short and go for the easy pickings.
Which I suppose is fine as long as you're honest with yourself about what you're getting. For many, it's still an improvement based on what they get back at home.

Southeast asia is rotten for women. I slept with a Thai girl on my first day in Bangkok and thought I was the man. A week later after I got a feel for the place it felt dirty and spent my entire trip avoiding them like the plague. There are plenty of sloppy white girls though. Will never go back.
Wait, is this the end of "The Thailand Era"?
Has the backlash begun?
I'd venture the backlash began over a decade ago.
I'll still go back. Again, you just have to be realistic about it. The high-quality women are to be found there but aren't obtainable by most farang - not to mention that most lack the patience to tell the difference.
It's hard to find them when you're not only sleeping with the type willing to give it up one the first night but walking around in public with them. This promiscuous behavior is not a cultural norm there - at least not on such a blatant level that we do it.

I think some people just have a tough time adjusting to the South Asian (or maybe Asian) mindset and day-to-day way of life.
Yep, exactly. Thailand is not for everyone.

thailand is a magical place and great for p4p.
Why some ppl would go there to chase white chicks is beyond me.
So are all these guys killing it in Thailand just "shoring" girls on the pro-bono tip, non-stop?
Or are they dipping into the pay for play pool every now and then?
I think most are shoring. It's not very hard to bang freelancers for free if you are somewhat young and have game. Not to mention that a lot of the girls are playing a "long-term" game. Hoping to latch down a foreigner and ride on the benefits.
Then you get a lot that are just happy to sleep in a nice room with hot water, air conditioning, a soft bed, and cable TV for a night. Many of these girls are sleeping 3+ in shithole rooms with other freelancers.
then you get the guys who kick down an inflated cab fare and say they didn't pay.
Also, a lot of the more positive threads are about Bangkok. That's an international city and not really comparable to most of Thailand. Even women with a bit of their own cash are more open-minded there, and the size of the place makes them less worried about their rep than they would be in a city like Chiang Mai.

People are are going to have a strong reaction to Thailand when they first arrive either positive or negative. Some people can enjoy it for what it is and others will hate it for all of its faults and their are many.
Very well said. I'd also put in that some guys are guilty of extremely rose-colored glasses and walk around in a stupor, completely oblivious to what's actually going on around them or whose head is on their shoulder when they wake up in the morning.
I think it's important to take the bad with the good as you mentioned, but the bad should not be dismissed either.
It's an exciting place that invokes a strong reaction, as you say, no matter what.

I would never ever go to any of the islands expecting to hook up with normal thai girls. Tourist spot = P4P. If my goal was to hook up with foreign girls it would be Koh Phi Phi or Koh Tao. Koh Samui is a place you take a girl with you but honestly I don't really care for the place. Koh Phangan is played out and a sausage fest i would avoid.
If you want normal Thai girls you can not be on the tourist trail. Best Places of course are BKK and Chaing Mai. Even in these places you can't be hanging out in the tourist spots. For people who are in Thailand for 1 or 2 weeks and are always in the touristy areas their view on the country is going to be dramatically different then those who live in BKK.
Well said - good advice.

But even for those of us who live in BKK and love it I can assure you one of the favorite past times of expats is to bitch about the country.
Some will love it. Some will hate it. Many will love it and hate it at the same time.
haha So true. It used to drive me crazy how much expats bitched about the place. Why not just leave?
It's like a love/hate relationship after you've been there a while, I guess. Better to accept the good and the bad from the beginning and see everything as it is rather then letting emotions get the best of you.

I've been in Thailand for 2 months now and I only started liking it about 3 days ago, I will elaborate on this more later.
It was just a matter of time. I told you it grows on you.
Anxious to hear your thoughts.

Thank you OGNorCal707 and Direct Danger for the detailed info!
So it sounds like at this point my best option from here is to go to Koh Tao. Any more info on Koh Tao from anyone who's been there would be appreciated
Best advice I can give is enjoy Koh Tao for the paradise it is. Don't expect it to be a world class party. Dive as much as you can. Get a motorbike and drive to every corner of the island accessible by road.
Drink a shitload of whiskey buckets and scam on drunken Swedes.
You still won't find party central, but for a mixture of laid back and partying on the beach, it's pretty cool. A lot more cool foreigners there than you'll find in most place of Thailand - due to the fact most come for diving or rock climbing.
Koh Tao is a place I could live long-term, but it would be a simple life, and I'd need the occasional trip to the city preserve my sanity at this stage in my life.
