I was in Koh Samui in early January with a mate. After that we went to Phi Phi and then Phuket. Stayed in Chaweng in Samui.
I've been to Samui a few times, each at different times of the year.
This time being january and the fact there had been a full moon party at the time over at Koh Phangan meant that there were more Australians (of the Muzza type ie short, sneakers and no top so they can show of their pectorals and many of them wearing those satchels that I can't stand - these guys are vibe killers in any nightclub/bar!) than usual but in saying that it was still quite international so there was something there for everyone.
Samui is the sort of place where you can meet some nice, attractive european, american, australian girls during the day at the beach or in the shops etc and if you put the work in you might get a result, but for hitting up the nightclubs (pretty much only option is Green Mango) and pulling a ONS i find that it's definitely not as easy here at Phuket or Bangkok.
During our 4 nights in Samui i kissed a Scottish girl at Green Mango but she wouldn't come back which i was really dirty about. saw her again 2 nights later and i think she was possibly up for it that night but i was going after a cute Thai Girl (not a pro) who works at one of the Samui Hotels and ended up with her number but of course she wouldn't come back either. My mate stuck it out with the Scottish girls' Scottish friend and was rewarded with a ONS that night.
There are lots of girls at Green Mango, but the ratio isn't fantastic overall and it just doesn't have the same free love vibe you can come across in Phuket. It's the sort of place you'll work into and think you're a huge chance and most likely leave at 3am empty handed. On prior trips to Samui i've had the odd ONS with a Thai girl but it's always been a lower hit rate in Samui.
Phuket was 2 ONS from 2 nights. Phi Phi got nothing. If you do well at Samui you'll probably do well at Phi Phi as well. I'm more suited to Phuket/Bangkok.
