The writer actually didn't portray the forum in as negative light as a lazy MSM journo might be expected to. Rather than trying to peg us as some kind of evil hive, they highlighted that Mr Cazes had drawn criticism from within the forum.

This is a bit of a tangent, but even though the writer doesn't explicitly shit all over the forum, his bias and lack of objectivity still come through loud and clear. For example:

Not only would encryption or any kind of safety measures not help you - you would be executed swiftly via accident, robbery gone wrong, murder-suicide by a team of specialized professionals.
Most people also don't have to be concerned about that unless they interact with the managerial and political class and decide foolishly to cross them.

Level 3:

This is where most of us lie and this is where this unfortunate young man should have put his attention.

Most law-enforcement including the official NSA levels don't have access to the deep-tier surveillance state mentioned above. They rely on emails, Paypal accounts, stupid online media and forum posts, actual leg-work of cops, anti-fraud divisions, undercover forum members and undercover clients of those sites.

Avoiding those agencies is not that difficult if you are a paranoid Gus Fring kind of guy who stays undercover, appears legit:

First of all - he should never have been in Thailand - his other choice candidates of Liechtenstein and Cyprus were equally bad. I think that a lesson here is that if any member assumes someone to engage in illegal activity, then he should contact the forum administrators or Roosh personally. There are a few ways of making millions within 2 years, but the path is usually not easy and you compete with hundreds of thousands of highly competent people in a few choice industries (or you build a business from the ground up and are lucky).

Here's how:

His original name on the forum was different than what it is now, it was changed at some point with gold membership. In quoted replies to his early comments you can see it if you go look.

That original name here is the same user name he used across a dozen forums and websites from what I can see. Tech forums asking about servers, computer security, asian visa stuff, Thai classifieds, gamer forums, etc.

That username is also connected to his UpWork account, which has his real name. Not sure how it is connected, as it's not in the URL or written on his page, but it comes back as a result when searching that username. Perhaps he used it there previously then changed it, or it's in the background of his UpWork.

And, this username has part of his first name.

Basically what happened is:

(known facts)

- First, they got his real name, in two ways; 1) Early password recovery emails and welcome emails from AlphaBay used a Hotmail address. They worked this address and untangled the VPN's/Tor or used undisclosed methods. It wasn't straight forward though as they knew this address 3 years ago according to reports. 2) His username on AlphaBay was Alpha02 (this is different than his old username on RVF/the one he used all around the net I'm talking about). He (surprise!) used that name once on a French language tech forum a decade ago and that forum had his real name attached. This how the FBI first identified him. The guy just couldn't think of new names. If he had even just changed it to Alpha03 they wouldn't have found the old post on that forum when searching.

...then, how they found him on RVF and other forums:

(my logical guesstimation)

- Once they had his real name they did a simple internet search and linked it, through one or multiple websites, to another username. As I said above, I myself found this username connected to his real name in a couple ways- If you searched the other way around (by his real name) you would find this connection as well obviously.

- They then did a search on the username, finding all the posts by that username on the multiple websites he used it on. One of those was RVF. From my brief looking, almost all of the accounts with that username have some corroborating facts making it clear it is the same guy.

Looking into paypal, finding payment, etc was for corroboration after they already knew the username and suspected it was him. The payment just confirmed what they already knew.

The thread where he 'boasted' about his porsche is locked to members below 250 posts. I know because I can't see it.
So the cops got by either:

- Creating an account and spamming 250 posts to see it.

or

- Hacking

Beyond that and in general, there was no hacking or NSA super duper real time key logging or any of that needed.

The guy basically made every retarded mistake that could be made. His original user name here was his first name + some numbers. I would not be surprised if the numbers were the PIN to his debit card or his home address. And he used that username with his real name elsewhere.

He was not a criminal mastermind, he was a basic loser with low self esteem. Because of this fact he took stupid risks, as he could not resist the urge to prove to himself and others that he was not a loser, no matter the risk. When he could not find success with his tech consultancy, and because he had no formal education to leverage or any real work history, he turned to the quick buck of crime. And, because he could not properly plan and execute this scheme either, it too was a failure like everything he did before.

Yeah he was criminally careless. The guy was so focused on acquiring citizenship in countries where he could avoid capital gains tax he forgot to cover his ass by getting one that could prevent extradition. A lot of rich guys I know think they are invincible and fly too close to the sun.

I wouldn't need even remotely close to 10 mil before I did everything in my power to "step out".

I'd buy a blue water yacht and a new name and hit the open ocean for a couple of years at least.

No country would have offered him official protection, as a non-natural born citizen, if he had become so high-profile that half a dozen foreign law enforcement agencies wanted him.

Acquired citizenships would have been voided (flaws would have been found in their acquiring process), long-term residency visas cancelled or waited out, or quite simply, his passport could've been cancelled by Canada (a passport is not a personal property).

The reason why criminals choose Thailand is because they can largely live very open open lives in some places, particularly in tourist areas where the cops are as big criminals as those they are supposed to chase. Countless criminals have lived very public lives on Koh Samui and in Pattaya, some even involved in crime with the police. When they get arrested it is SWAT teams from Bangkok police, not locals.

Where else could you do that? In South America the local gangs would have you quickly and you would be kidnapped. These criminals want this kind of high profile braggard lifestyle.
