Swedish DJ Avicii Dead At 28

Truly shocked.

There’s a fresh documentary about him on Swedish TV chronicling his life from the beginnings to right after he quit touring in 2016. It’s called Avicii: True Stories if anyone’s interested.

It seems he was an alcoholic first and foremost. In the doc he’s very open about drinking before shows to cope with nervousness and pressure. Also open about his deteriorating mental health (burn out). Being in the EDM scene of course there were other drugs, but alcohol seemed to be his poison.

His gall bladder was removed because of drinking, there’s a lot of footage from his hospital stays. No malignancy (at least not in doc but of course they may edit out parts). The hospital stays and periods of sickness and pain after also show how the stress fucked him up; he’s sitting in a hospital bed, working on his laptop, while talking to doctors about removing his gall bladder to be able to continue touring. Very likely a workaholic, many artists he collaborated with (Chris Martin, Wyclef Jean, Guetta among others) admired his work ethic.

Not a big fan of his music, but this doc really made me sympathize with him. He was a true introvert whose natural habitat was the creative atmosphere of a studio, not being on stage every evening for several years. Raging success after you’re barely out of high school can be the worst thing to happen to you.

28 years, what a waste. He was a true talent and composer whose best years lay ahead of him.

Alcohol at that age is hard to do it. It was likely a mix of drugs and alcohol.

At least he had a short, but eventful life.

I got a BJ pre-game off this blonde in a Portakabin toilet at one of my first ever raves in 2011/2012. Avicii was headlining. I wonder what she is thinking about today. A great night with my mates also.

Seek Bromance, Hey Brother, The Nights, Dear Boy, Fade Into Darkness and I Could Be The One with Nicky Romero. All tunes

He saw more of the World in his short time than most will ever see, even if it was tainted by certain vices. RIP.

Man...this is sad.

He was my first ever edm show at the DC Armory back in 2011, when Levels’ popularity was at its all time high. Also my first mdma experience. This guy and that song were THEE reason edm blew up that year and the years to follow.

Despite being one of the biggest names for years, he just never seemed like he belonged on the mic at Ultra screaming ‘ARE YOU FUCKING READY MIAMI??!?’ to thousands of kids. He seemed quiet and awkward, and it must have been immense pressure for him to muster up the energy night after night after night.

RIP Avicii.

Think it actually was suicide now. In that documentary, he mention he had seen psychiatrists and stuff due to all the stress and talks several times about how exhausting it was with all the attention when he's actually an introvert. And the police in Oman said they knew exactly what had happened to him and that there wasn't a crime but that they didn't want to tell the media what had happened. Here's his manager btw: https://imgur.com/a/o6c5Uxc

One interesting thing is that when he was a total newbie to producing and DJing, he said that all he did was to study and copy several hundred big songs that had melodies that caught people's ears. With time he copied less and less part of these melodies and was eventually able to create and invent cool melodies himself. Probably a smart way to go about it that most newbie producers don't do. He studied success first and didn't just start off trying to invent shit just out of random.

Also, if he wasn't discovered and made it big he would probably just have been a virginish nerd who spent most of his life being on the computer in some small apartment and live on Coke and fast food with no or little interaction with girls, like so many other young Scandinavian men today.

Ironically it seems like he was actually one of the few that would have been happier with a mom's basement life like that than one with massive attention, world fame and endless pussy thrown at him.

A primary cause of gallbladder disease is excessive alcohol consumption.

Two types of people develop pancreatitis: severe alcoholics, and out of control type 2 diabetics. Among diabetics, the condition comes on rapidly and is almost always fatal. With alcoholics, if they survive and manage to stop drinking, their long term survival is pretty decent. But as a rule, most alcoholics who develop this issue are profoundly addicted to the point where withdrawal can be life threatening.

Some people are determined to crash and burn no matter what. I doubt there’s much mystery to his demise. Profound alcoholism.

I thought all the greats were supposed to die at 27.

You want to know the only thing you can assume about a broken down old man? It's that he's a survivor.

I haven't really told a lot of people (Since most people basically over 30 don't know who he is)... but Avicii was one of the most impactful EDM artists ever. He had multiple bangers and toured and saw most of the world.

It is very sad to see this guy pass away. I was in shock when I heard the news yesterday. I'm a fairly introverted guy that loves music, but hasn't been to a lot of concerts or shows or festivals. I wish I could have seen Avicii live in concert (along with Tom Petty and a bunch of other artists that have died in the past 2 years). But anyways.. he was one of the greatest (seriously) artists of this decade, and he will be sorely missed. It is devastating to see him go.. it's always devastating to see someone fight and wind up losing their battles against demons (alcoholism in this case). But he made a huge impact in the world and on music that will live on for a long time.

Deadmau5, another fellow artist who had a beef with Avicii, gave his condolences. (Don't know how to show tweets)

I don't mean to be a cunt, but there's thousands of Swedes in Stockholm right now, mourning his death. Where are they when it comes to protests against migrants?

I've heard this song a lot, and I've always liked it. The folk sound is something I associate with the Americana music genre, but it also has an upbeat pop music sound to it.

I don't understand the whole DJ thing. I thought they just played other people's music at parties and clubs. I know they also use turntables to match beats going from one song to the next. I think they also mix multiple music sources to make spontaneous EDM creations.

However, Wake Me Up sounds like a standard pop song with a singer, musicians, and a songwriter. What's the DJ's role in this, as a DJ per se?

The entire production, editing, lyrics, and usually 90-95% of the instrumentation(for example I might have a friend come in and do the violin parts I might need from him as I can't play the violin). Only thing they don't have a hand is in the vocals and lyrics may or may not be co-written. Well that's if you're respectable in the business and don't have a team do most of the work. There are notable well known frauds in the industry that get called out regularly.

From my knowledge of the industry, since Avicii toured often and didn't have as much studio time he cut a few corners probably on the editing side or in the small things he didn't have time for. So roughly 85%-95% of the entire process was on him.

TL;DR DJs who produce and put their name on the music(especially one without any featured artists or singers/songstresses) are one man song machines. Generally why there's a lot of respect for even mainstream artists in the community besides the obvious frauds. Of course we get ripped on by the classic rock guys who think it's just pushing two keys/fiddling on a computer that takes no skill and then going on stage to press play.

And on DJing itself. It's creating a 1 hour plus continuous stream of song that's supposed to be so that the party doesn't stop. As much as I can say without going off about it for 3-4 pages.

This does not look like the image of a man that is 1 day away from his demise. Regardless of what happened, Avicii's impact on electronica & pop culture is undeniable. I won't forget hearing your music pulsating inside of the nightclubs & on the radio back when I frequented the city of Chicago earlier this decade. R.I.P. young man!

I remember reading a few years ago about him retiring from touring-- that was a big shock. Avicii was at the top of the game.

I read the subtext of what he was saying at the time: introvert, exhausted touring, alcohol and then getting sick (gallbladder I believe) from all the stress.

And I'm happy that he made the decision. Because he at least got a few extras years that he wouldn't have had otherwise. Entertainment is one tough bitch, and I respected him because he got the hell out after realizing that there was more to life than the pressure grinder of fame. I can't imagine how crushing it must of been to be up DJing at some big festival like ultra, when all he wanted to do was to be in the studio making music. If there was some manager plying him with pills or booze to make an extra buck off his back, I hope they go straight to hell. They deserve nothing less.

In Avicii's documentary his manager gave off the vibe he's more in it for the money.

Don't know this guy but take consolation in the fact that pop artists produce three years of outstanding music tops and then fade, usually after 28. There are no exceptions to this rule, it's the nature of the medium.

In my experience, when they say that a young man's death was "an accident" or "not the result of foul play" and are otherwise curiously tight-lipped about it, then it's often the result of the guy accidentally strangling himself while doing "erotic asphyxiation" while masturbating. That came to mind because of that picture of him from the boat the day before where he doesn't seem to be in physical or emotional pain.

Anyway, it's all just speculation.

Devastating news! First celebrity death that really made me sad.

I think Avicii played a major part in the lives of millions of people who had their youth/student years from 2010-2015. I, like many others got so many great memories connected with his music.

Im sure people from my generation will enjoy a beer on a warm summer day in 2045 and say: "Shit...you remember Avicii?" Yeah man, best years of my life".

A true legend who will never be forgotten!
