HIN1 gives some very specific advice, not sure if its right for everyone. But his point about making it work for you is solid.

In Ronin, the good guys are a collection of spies/muscle assembed from a variety of countries and backgrounds. The each dress differently and have different accesseroies. The contrast is interesting. But DeNiro when he wants to blend into the French Riviera selects some basic items made from luxurious fabrics - nice wool sweater, suede sport coat, classic but comfortable slicked back hair style. Its a big contrast to a blue-collar look the rest of the film. Instant transformation.

There is a DeNiro film called Ronin that makes this point. (As an aside, its a pretty good spy/action/suspense film, similar to the Jason Bourne flicks. Its not as good as those, but if you watch closely you'll see that that Bourne stole a lot of the driving stunts from this film.) About halfway through the film, DeNiro has to scout the bad guys who are at a high end hotel on the French Riviera. Now, in the film he is a late 50s ex-CIA tough guy, hard on his luck, dresses like a government employee. To penetrate the hotel, he dons a plain merino mock turtleneck with a suede jacket, and has a statuesque 20-something blond on his arm. Its a classic look, and he looks wealthy and like he has status without looking try-hard. The scene is just a minute or two in the movie, but if you want to know how to fake status this is the best explanation I've seen. Here is a clip of his outfit when they are in their dump hideout, getting ready to scout the high-end hotel. This still photo doesn't really do it justice, and the contrast with his appearance earlier in the film is even more instructive.



You can see his outfit a little better in the trailer, but to really understand the power of a few changes you need to watch the film and see the before and after.

Great movie, it features one of the best car chase scene of all times.

when it comes to name brand I have a weird Loyalty. Ralph Lauren, for example, has been an important part of my wardrobe since i was maybe 3. I still have many clothes from 5-10 years ago that feel almost as good as when I first bought them.
