So true. This thread would make so much more sense with some pictures.

Otherwise we are just guessing and going in circles.

Fitness Fail: After four years of lifting weights, I still look like sh*t

Where should I start in this modern saga of American obesity, loneliness, and the difficulties of doing self-improvement over the internet.

1. Rex did NOT fail at fitness!

He wanted to get bigger and stronger. He got bigger and stronger.

His FAILURE was DIETARY.

He still looks like shit because he never adjusted his diet properly.

2. I've seen Rex's diet

IT'S TERRIBLE!!!

It's the typical fat american diet!

90% of it was pre-processed, preservative and artificially flavored bullshit.

3. His Goal is Unclear

"Bulk" - "Cut" - "add mass" - "lose weight" - "get stronger" - "get in shape"

In the beginning, he literally wanted to gain weight and ate extra portions of food to make it happen..

Now, he is struggling to lose the weight that he WANTED TO GAIN!?!?

Needs a more clearly defined goal!

Rex, you say you want a more trim physique, lose fat, slim down, look better. Then why are you continuing to train like a powerlifter?

Is your goal to lift the absolute heaviest object possible or is your goal to trim down and have a body you like looking at and feel confident in while still remaining reasonably strong?

What is most important to you? Unless you plan to get on gear, you need to make a choice.

Changing up the reps of your powerlifting routine will not do anything to drop the fat or transform your body.

Here we are at page six, answers and recommendations have been given that will help you get what you want, and it seems you are again ignoring them or pretending you still haven't gotten the information.

For example-

Here is what nomadbrah said:

Quote: (07-02-2017 12:50 PM)nomadbrah Wrote:

.... it is time to get off the strength based routines and into a pure bodybuilding routine.

Do these every workout:
Pullups
Chin Ups
Dips

Do these also:
Barbell/Dumbbell rows
Pull Downs
Lat Raises
Tricep Extentions
Tricep Rope Pulldowns
Curls for the Gurls

I would deadlift once a week, squat once a week, bench once a week.

As for diet, get rid of the car, get a bicycle, walk everywhere, take the stairs instead of elevator, take up a hobby which makes you move.

Here is your reply:

What do you think about cycling through different rep ranges?

You expressed zero interest in the things he recommended that actually would change your body, you only had interest in the one thing you are already doing! And even then you do not want to make the change recommended, you want to tweak some reps instead!

You ignore advice that would actually make the changes you want and you respond only to easy things you want to hear which require little to no change- and this is the same for every topic you create.

Cycling some reps is not going to transform your body and drop 50 pounds of fat.

I'm surprised nobody has said this earlier. A hypertrophy rep scheme, or hell even cardio will probably do you some good. It'll be easier to burn more calories than you eat due to the nature of the workout. Powerlifting rep schemes are for size, not for physique and at 250 lbs you don't need any more size.

Drop the beer and wine Rex. It made a huge difference to my belly when I did. Lots of calories and estrogenic compounds in beer especially.

Eat less more move mate, it's easy really.

No, I'm on board with the recommendations (except for dips- risky for shoulders), and was simply asking about rep ranges while drawing up a new program incorporating these recommendations.

I was hoping it doesn't come to that... but I am currently down to light beer (<100 calories) and dry red wine. If weight loss stalls I'll have to give those up. (Will be very boring, though...)

It could be the 10x higher hormones than the natural ammount in my blood. But this type of short and vague answer of yours, allied with the lack of updates or reports from your side, not even a little show of interest in helping yourself, gets reaaaaally pissening. I mean really.

There is all this advice, look at all the time people took out of their days to help you change this fat physique of yours that you want so much to change. And you can't take 15 minutes to answer things like:

- I'm doing this, this and this
- My diet is exactly like this
- Changes in the weight/mirror weekly

I don't really see a point in keeping this thread going. Some mod should lock it so Rex stop getting his beloved attention, and people stop losing time here.

There is enough advice in this thread to help anyone lose 100+ lbs. It's really simple, just comes down to consistency. Something Rex has not shown (at least in this board).

I hoped to see this thread going in a direction of you acquiring that 200 lbs shredded physique and reports of you getting pussy thrown at you. At your height and that weight you should get in the top 5-10% of men physique wise. And of course it would be mostly 6's and a few 7's, but hey, that's waay better then whats going on right now for you, is it not ?

I could write you a bodybuilding routine, a diet plan to follow and give you tips on what to do, things I know for sure work, because they've worked on me, and on many of my friends. I believe many others here could too, but what's the encouragement for us to do that ?

Think about the body you want, think about it day and night. Start to hate how you look, and get obsessed with how you want to look. Perhaps you can get there, then.

Alright, my current diet (last couple of weeks) is basically this:

Breakfast: Bacon, 2 eggs, 2 sausages, black tea (no sugar or cream), fruit (berries). (Optional: Greek Yogurt)
Lunch: Steak, or chicken, or pork (i.e. I smoked some pulled pork recently) and water or sparkling water*
Dinner: Chicken, Steak, or Fish, with a vegetable (broccoli) cooked in olive oil. 1-2 light beers or 1-2 glasses red wine
Snack: Fruit (raspberries or blackberries), or 1-2 oz. Italian salami

If I'm out I may get a hamburger and ice water for lunch. Somehow I doubt the "processed" bun and tablespoon of ketchup (which has some sugar) will totally ruin the diet.

When I get bored I may switch the bacon for smoked salmon.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

You're fat.

I lift in your range and I'm considerably lighter and I want to still lose another set of 20 pounds.

I'll be honest though, I've primarily gotten down to the weight I am due to getting sick, and I'm probably just going to get an ADD diagnosis to drop my wedding ght further

Your post mostly talks about how it looks like you don't lift, and that's primarily due to your weight. Try doing some serious caloric limitation to get you some results to motivate you sooner.

There is one vegetable in your entire day - some fruit, sure, but only one vegetable.

I'd bet good money that your diet is not as tight as you'd like us to believe, and that it is seriously deficient in the basics.

I'll be honest..

This is garbage.

This is why the body "looks like shit". The diet is shit.

This is how you eat if you want to be fat. And smell bad.

The diet is mostly CHEAP, LOW QUALITY, meats.

Intelligent people do not eat like this.. There is some mental disconnect going on here..

Rex is addicted to meat.. Rex is addicted to eating..

It's a pleasure zone for him. Something to look forward to..

Addiction is real. Your mental pattern is your destiny.

The meat companies work with chemists to make their product more addictive.

Game is mental.

We talk about approaching girls and working out and going out and buying clothes BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU WILL EVER DO FOR YOUR GAME IS TO FIX YOUR MENTAL HANGUPS.

Rex, get more help. Get better help.

What you're doing is not working. You're actually getting worse!

You better make a serious move now before things get even worse for you, which they will as you get older and your metabolism slows.

It's mental.

^Salami, pulled pork, sausage, bacon, cooked and olive oil drenched "vegetables", fast food hamburgers, 2 beers/wine per day - those should not be in a diet of a man needing to lose 40-70 pounds of fat.

High shitty/processed fats/meats, no vegetable, low carb diet may work for some guys, especially younger ones, but for others they need to really watch the fat and source/type of fat. Even if this does work for you, it is not a quality, balanced diet for health and staying trim long term- for anyone.

If you're 40 years old and fat/obese you can't be eating some shitty Atkins diet that tells you to eat all the bacon and sausage and salami and hamburger patties and processed high fat foods you want. Just being low carb is not enough.

This right here is the perfect example of not understanding what is quality meat/fat/food-

Quote:Quote:

If I'm out I may get a hamburger and ice water for lunch. Somehow I doubt the "processed" bun and tablespoon of ketchup (which has some sugar) will totally ruin the diet.

Number one, he takes it as an obvious fact that a processed fast food beef patty is perfectly fine for his diet, which of course it is not (again, this is shitty Atkins mentality). He then puts "processed" in quotes because he doesn't seem to believe this matters or understand what it's about so he mocks it.

Thing is, he shouldn't need any outside convincing of these facts- he can see himself in the mirror that it isn't working or healthy, but yet he continues with the this diet because he was told these things are fine, denying the reality of the mirror and scale.

And of course there is also the possibility that he's dressing up his diet to look "better" than it really is.

1) Please show me the study where the nitrates from celery salt used in "uncured" bacon causes obesity.

2) I do believe Ancel Keys' hypothesis that fatty foods cause heart disease and obesity has since been debunked.

3) I don't consider fresh ground beef to be processed in the sense most people mean it. Processed food is something like Pop-tarts, Kraft Mac-and-Cheese, Saltines, Spam, etc. Yes, ketchup and bread are technically processed, but if you read the ingredient list, and the quantities are small, I find it hard to believe that they are total deal breakers.

4) I do feel thinner on this diet. When I get to a scale I will see how much I've lost and report back.

5) Finally, before singing the virtues of fish and seafood, consider:

The mirror is lying. The scale is lying. You will show them the academic papers and they will relent and you'll turn into what you want to be.

This is NOT a solid diet. This is a shitty diet that will produce an unattractive body.

I would add a lot more fresh vegetables and add plant based proteins.

Example:

Breakfast -- Egg + vegetable omelette, fruit, oatmeal

Lunch -- chicken or fish with vegetables and brown rice or cauliflower rice

Snack -- mixed nuts/fruit

Dinner -- plant protein with vegetables (bean chili, yams, rice and beans, salad with plant proteins, etc)

Dessert -- Protein shake + fruit

While it's certainly true that fat is not intrinsically bad, shitty fats from shitty sources and in excess quantities are not helpful or healthy. And this is doubly true for a guy needing to lose ~50 pounds.

It's a good thing that we have turned away from the whole extreme "low fat, high carb" message of the 80's & 90's, but many dudes have taken this far to the other extreme- pretending anything with fat, no matter the source and no matter the quantity is "ok" just because it has low carbs/sugar.

If a guy ate only bacon cheese burgers with no bun, and nothing else, yes he may lose some weight. You will also lose weight doing crack, meth, smoking, taking an ECA stack, getting on gear... Being able to lose weight on something does not mean it is the most effective way or the best way or the healthy way.

Imagine if the bacon cheeseburger guy did the same low carb diet but only ate chicken, eggs, steak, and salad with quality oils and veggies. He would not only lose the weight, he would lose a lot more of it and more quickly, while also feeling better, more energetic and healthy. And not smelling bad, like Gio said.

There is a difference between these fatty foods in moderated quantities:

Quality beef, quality butter, quality oils (uncooked), salmon, avocado, almonds, peanuts, walnuts, full fat yogurt, full fat milk, eggs, dark chocolate, etc

... and these:

Salami, sausage, bacon, fried "vegetables", fast food hamburgers, bratwurst, hot dogs, and other shitty fats or processed mystery meats with additives.

Foods should be giving you something positive. Salami, sausage, bacon, pork slop stew, fast food hamburgers etc do not. These are not the best foods to lose weight and be healthy. The only reason to defend them is because they taste good. That is all. It is hamstering. Doesn't mean you can't eat them, some are fine in moderated quantities if you are already in shape. But we are talking about what is best for a fat man here.

If Rex is at the point point of arguing...

Processed meat = good or fine

Fish = be careful!

..then there is no point to continue engaging. Like Giovonny said, there is some sort of mental issue here.
