Got an opportunity to own a bar in Cancun - no experience 24yo

Just let us know what you decide to do and how it goes - either way good or bad. If it blows up tells us so at least we can use it as a warning for the next guy. I am not wishing you ill will, it would be great if you did well. But the odds seem stacked against you.

Op: lots of good advice here. Take it from someone who has been involved in seeing dozens and dozens of
Businesses fail all sharing similar forms of rationalizing you are expressing here.
Do not do it. You will lose your money and if you are a hothead possibly your life haggling with some enforcer trying to tax half your profits for Protection. Leave the tourist zone and hit tulum 10 minutes out and you will see the true locals cancun. Many of my roofers / cement workers are from this area and almost all businesses pay protection money. I've visited their homes and had them point this out to me first hand. Just wait until another cartel tries squeezing In before you get taxed by two organizations. That's when the real fun begins.
Also never fully trust someone looking to sell their business. I've seen local business owners ask me to sit in to watch customer count / sales. I've seen these same owners pay fake customers To come in while there and build up fake sales. I've even seen some sellers increase rental / business income and pay extra income tax to increase cash flow / goodwill in order to get approved for higher financing For a greater sales price.
Any Mexican local worth his salt will always sell to family / friends before hitting up a careless guero like yourself.
Off the reservation usually gives it harsh but it's direct and his summary basically itemizes line by line what I'm thinking.

You have twenty-seven thousand dollars.
Travel.
Invest.
Pay off your student loans.
Go to Mexico, rent out a luxury apartment and have a revolving door of whores and blow for a few months if thats what it takes to fix whatever is making you feel unsatisfied with your life.
Of course the bar's owner said there are no problems with protection money. He's probably tired of paying it himself so he's looking to dump it on some poor foolish foreigner. No offense.
As has been said, you stand to lose a lot more than that 27k if this goes south, which there is a high chance it will.
There are better ways to gain a "life lesson" than this.
