Poreshenko has low self esteem, like most Ukie oligarchs and didn't want to have more powerful Russian ones dictating to him.

It was also that former president who bought the Ukie language to Kiev..back in 2001 MOST spoke either Russian or a combo/mix dialect(forgot the name, mentioned it in older posts). That same president actually also admitted publicly that he thought UKIE language was a peasant redneck language, and he actually sent his kids to a private school that uses Russian language.

You know there's a problem when the country sends out 100k draft notices and only 5k show up! lol

As for what language to learn..well I thik it is no brainer! That would be like asking someone if they are better of learning Norwegian or English.

Russian is an international language of sorts. It is spoken as the main language in numerous countries and as a secondary language in a few others. You learn Ukie and you only get to speak to a ukie. You learn Russia and you can speak to people from many former USSR countries as welL as EE and central Asia. You can even speak to many Cubans and Syrians(RU second language there for many).

Russian is easier to learn , simply because there is more courses and material out there. I just went to my corner deli. They have dozens of Russian language papers and magazines. This is in Brooklyn. I barely see Ukie media , although Ukie's are a big % of the RU speaking population.

Stick to big languages. Safest for communication, most utility as well. Most well educated Ukranains speak both Russian and Ukrainian. Many speak English as well.
