Artificial sweeteners. Are they dangerous?

I don't think peoples fear of artificial sweeteners are for no reason what so ever.

I know personally that I don't do well with Sucralose. When I got to Peru I could only find Whey Protein and Amino acids sweetened with Sucralose. Back in the states I used all natural supplements sweetened with Stevia. With in 3 days of taking the protein and aminos I started getting headaches like I was hung over even though I was not drinking alcohol.

Well if you are getting direct side effects from certain artificial sweeteners, that isn't unnecessary paranoia is it? And holy shit, i was wrong about diet soda jacking insulin. Shame, I kinda liked that side effect of it ..

As far as ones like Stevia, they have been show to jack your blood sugar and up your Diabetes risk the same as other sweeteners.

Stevia lowers blood sugar and is generally good for you - http://www.livestrong.com/article/505230...ood-sugar/

I read Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills a really long time ago but remember it laying out a strong, fact-based case of why to avoid most artificial sweeteners and MSG, especially for children. Stick to sugar alcohols like erythritol and xylitol, or stevia if possible, or the real deal. Glycine is an amino acid with possible life-extending properties and a mildly sweet taste, can be used in coffee, tea, etc. I take 20 grams a day and might do a thread on it sometime.

I still wouldn't eat stevia vs. eating NO sweeteners which I think is best for overall health.
It does have a potential to cause allergic reactions apparently.

I do occasionally chew gum that has Xylitol in it.

Which reminds me that Sorbitol is another one that can cause digestive problems.

Yeah, I remember that about saccharin -- they had to revise the claims of cancer when it was revealed rats got it when they consumed 600 times the human dose. Still tastes like shit even if it is relatively safe.

Saccharin is supposedly the "safest one" and the earliest artificial sweetener, but even then 100 years ago it was strongly debated and only passed in a very corrupt way:

http://www.doctoryourself.com/history5.html Here you have an entire history book on the other crap.

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articl...fects.aspx

Don't get me started on Aspartame or Splenda/Sucralose - plenty of links even to studies showing that even small doses are crap.

But please don't just throw everything into that bucket.

Stevia is a herb that can be grown at home or in your garden. I have some Stevia plants and they taste better fresh than in powder or liquid form. Xylitol is also safe to use. Aside form that I am not afraid of organic sugar either. It is still by far more beneficial than all the artificial crap out there.

I was using Splenda, but went back to raw sugar after reading studies like this. And since other than in coffee in the morning, I avoid sugar as much as possible, I figure it's fine.

Check your toothpaste and mouthwash, plenty of artificial sweeteners.
I cured my allergies by switching to a natural toothpaste.

Only because this got bumped...I was gonna get nerdy after having just taken a clinical nutrition class, but decided on addressing the real problem...

This is one of those, what's the symptom vs what's the problem. The Pareto principle...focus on the 20% and you'll fix at least 80% of the problem.

If you're wondering whether artificial sweeteners are good or bad, you're probably already ingesting too much sugar (or other sweetener). One post on here mentioned somebody drinking 4 cans of soda per day and switching to diet soda as an example of how bad artificial sweeteners are...the problem isn't the sweetener, it's the 4 cans of soda.

The reason artificial sweeteners exist is because people were lazy-ass slobs eating like shit consuming way too many calories from sugar. The problem wasn't the type of sweetener, it was the amount...but it's easier to make money off of diet soda than off sugar cutting diet plans, so we have artificial sweeteners.

If you're thinking about artificial vs sugar vs stevia, chances are you're ingesting too much of it. Unless you want to know the science of it, in which case, you'll be spending some serious time on the NCBI website.

Decrease sweet intake (sugar, etc) requires 20% of effort, and you'll achieve >80% of the health benefit.

It reminds me of when I got into lifting. The problem wasn't which lifts to do or what workout routine to choose...it was simply getting to the gym and moving heavy weights. 80% of the benefits (aesthetic, psychological, health) was achieved by simply doing step 1. Then, once that habit was formed, I could focus on different lifts, different muscles, different methods, which gave me an additional 80% benefits (of the remaining 20%).

Most of us don't eat and swallow our toothpaste and mouthwash. I use plain Listerine here, that'll fuck you up if ya drink it...
Also arm and hammer baking soda toothpaste rocks and is cheap.

I use and recommend agave syrup - it's natural and has a low glycemic index.

I get the Wholesome (wholesomesweet.com) 2pack at Costco - it's a bargain.

Who is that lunatic that keeps dumping 8 punctured cans of diet coke in the forest every day?

I... I'll go hide somewhere now.
