Corporations are looking for a very specific type of black man and most guys don't fit the mold. They see a name like "tyrone" or "Lashawn" and your resume is dumped. I've had a guy say to me that he doesn't hire black people because they carry too much clout politically and he's afraid to be sued if he misteps around his own employees. Meanwhile black dudes are getting shot in the face by the cops and nothing is done about it. So much for my political clout

I have a pretty ethnic name and I know it makes people sometimes second guess me and my abilities. I have (not too seriously) considered doing a name change. I had a friend helping me spruce up my resume at one point and he said that I should consider just going by "John" or something innocuous.

I was joking with a coworker about getting a white wife and having kids and he was like, "seriously though, make sure you give them white names. Just telling you. It will be harder for them if they don't"

Could those dudes be fucked up and racist? Maybe? Or maybe the system is weird. I can't even be mad at them for saying what they said because that is how many prospective employers think about minorities in the workplace.

Some similarities to Germany. They did some test about names and kind of noticed that immigrant names (turkish / arabic) often get not into the interview.
Same resume just different name. Some critics about this because the data sheet wasn't big enough.
Anyway at the end its that a guy that recruit or hire people like to prefer things he is used too. I guess it's natural habit for most of us. Sometimes you are not even aware that you chose something that is similar to you. You just feel more "natural" with it and give the guy that seems like you more credit.

Next thing is that people kind of scared of maybe problems. When you hire someone who seems to be different, how will he interact in the company? Demand he some extra things? And so on and on.

Not to mention that every person / group is part of a bigger image. And when its a negative stereotype it get harder for you in some points.

^ Yeah, I understand that. I don't really care because I am awesome in interviews and such. but it is real and it is an issue. It doesn't get talked about much because it is very difficult to prove that an employer is discriminating against you because of your name. But I have seen it done.

I was talking to my boss once at the company. I was a manager there and she was teaching me how to hire others. She showed me a resume some girl posted to the site. It was a solid resume and I told my boss the woman sounded like she could be a good hire. My boss said, "nope. Look at where she's from and look at her name. She was from a poor neighborhood and had a pretty ghetto name like Laronda or something, but her credentials were rock solid.

Obviously, my boss didn't hire this woman and I didn't raise a stink about it because it was pretty minor, but that is how some hiring managers think. All of them? Nah, but I've heard of this happening a fair bit.

Just aware about Germany but I guess this is the same issue. If you are turkish / arab and your school is in one of the "problem" areas, well mostly they will not hire you. I think its not in every case racism, its just the fear of maybe trouble / problems that are associate with those image of the people.

Something interesting too: Mostly women work at HR and pre-select your application. They found out that the HR boss or the actual boss often don't see all resumes. And that women sort out pretty women because its some hamster spinning competition for them. So when you are a good educated women and good looking, it can be that some HR chick put your resume into the trash even before the boss even see it.

Btw about the strange names, read a book that mothers quit lower education go to more "unique" names. But well I would say a lot of American names sound strange for me^^

I specify corporations and firms in the private sector (not government) because ain't shit for free when money is on the line and halfway competent gets you all the way fired(or never hired). Trust me, I know the media will have you believe that just be black with a professional degree and you get hired on the spot, but I assure you it is not like that. All the brothers I know that are successful are very hard working, pay attention to detail, and are extremely competent. All the unsuccessful blacks I know are just like the unsuccessful whites, unsuccessful Southeast Asians (Mindy Kaling's sorry ass medical school dropout brother), and unsuccessful Americans of any shade, they are all halfway competent- and no firm or corporation wants to hire them.

Parents should be careful about giving their kids unusual names. I swear some parents named their kids by tossing a handful of Scrabble tiles in the air and naming them by whatever letters landed face up. Quazir could be the most brilliant guy alive and so polished he makes Denzel Washington look like a hoodrat, but employers' innate prejudices are going to make them toss his resume in the circular file.

For me as a Patent Attorney with a PhD currently finishing my MD I run into people all the time who know of me but have never met me. I have a typically white sounding name so when they realize who I am they are always a little surprised. My mother told me that when she named us she thought about how our names would be received by others and decided not to be exotic and kept it simple.

The bolded claim definitely does not generalize across the private sector, especially with corporations. For corporations, this is exacerbated as the straightforward result of the principal-agent problem inherent to corporations: Shareholders bear the brunt of long run profit and losses (and thus market valuations), but middle managers and their peons are the ones who make interviewing and hiring decisions, under the Sauron's Eye that is Human Resources.

I've written about this here on this forum before.

Until fairly recently, I worked on Wall Street for a quantitatively-focused team. We used to maintain essentially three separate tracks (literally three separate resume piles) for interviewing/hiring:

1. Blacks, latinos, women.
2. White (Gentile and Jewish) men.
3. South and East Asian men.

In order of preference. And by "we" I mean my former colleagues, since I had long abstained from the hiring process, as contributing to actual institutional racism/sexism (as opposed to the usual usage of "institutional racism/sexism", which can generally be read as "imaginary racism/sexism") made me ill.

This kind of hiring practice was pretty typical across different teams in our firm, and other similar firms on Wall Street. Some may split these into fewer or more "tracks," and/or have slightly different rank orders of preferences, but the commonality is that women are prioritized ahead of men, and blacks and latinos ahead of whites and Asians.

What transpired was certainly much closer to interviewing/hiring any halfway (or not even halfway...) competent black/latino/woman than being "demographic"-blind.

A 3.4 from a Top 60 school would be a near-guarantee for an interview with us and subsequent hiring offer if you're black/latino/a woman ("ooh! we absolutely need to talk to him/her"!). It would get you ignored if you're a white male ("ok... next"). It would get you derided if you're an Asian male ("why did he even bother trying? 3.4 from [school] is borderline retarded.")

If you are black, you are better off not complaining about racism, working hard, and developing a high social i.q.

I work with a lot of blacks as customers and a few as co-workers. In the past six months my worst experience was with a white woman.

In everyday life I have very little problem with getting along with everybody.



That's why my advice to deboinair was to forget this, "As a black male in racist Amerikkka".

A non-white guy (not sure of his race) in another thread talked recently about how annoying some of these White Nationalists are that have invaded the manosphere. He has a very fair point. Some of the comments on ROK are almost comical in their "Woe is me so I'm a huge racist now".

This is simply the other coin of that. Successful blacks, like Atlanta Man mentioned, don't go around alienating whites by scowling at them all day and writing America with three K's in it, and moaning their entire lives about how that cop mistreated him a couple of times. They let losers wallow in that crap. Same things with whites.



You a white who didn't get a job somewhere because of affirmative action? Boo fucking hoo, go be successful somewhere else and stop wallowing in your pity for yourself. There are places in the world, like China, that extremely value whites.
