I agree it has more to do with personal taste and style, combined with the collective imagination of the cultural setting you find yourself in.

A personal example:
In the art & writing peddling world, many believe that dressing oddly and/or wearing a hat- the more vintage the better- is a sure fire way to indicate that you are a creative soul" and thus shall be approached by potential customers.
To a certain point this is/was true only because the archetype made it to the collective imaginiarium.
Then again, these days you have hipsters and hats are Slowly getting back in fashion, so the effect is dilluted and the hat will not make up for lack of sellsmanship...
Think Martin Mystery and his ridiculous hats.

A suit can reinforce frame.

You are trying to project yourself at your best. Gives one focus.

there is a lot of talk about suits on this forum, and some guys resist because its not congruent for them. that makes sense. don't force it if it doesn't work for you. but the power angle should not be denied.

but suits do give you power. I wear a suit every day to work because I am in a conservative industry. People of all races, ages and classes instinctively bow down to me. they give me the prime place to stand in the elevator, even when I am low energy. sales people at stores give you better service and more respect. its uncanny and instinctual. i also get IOIs.

some psychologists did a study about people in higher status cars like Lexus or Mercedes. other drivers deferred to them more often than to lower status cars, such as by letting them jump in front of line at a traffic jam.

Wearing a well-fitted suit makes it easier to approach women. I've found that when wearing one if I stand near a woman, even if she's reading a book or has on headphones, I can tell that she is aware that I'm in her vicinity and is watching me with her peripheral vision. I've tested this out by saying something, in a normal tone of voice (including to the women with earphones), something like, "What book is that you're reading?" or something similar. More than 90% of the time they'll immediately stop what they're doing and respond.

When not wearing a suit, I get the same response about 60% of the time. I've also noticed that I get probably 100 times more looks and compliments with the suit than anything else I wear. The suit really is a powerful tool.

It depends on several factors.

I love suits and own many nice ones, I dislike wearing them because of the reaction I get.

It sends a message that I have money, which as a older guy projects provider.

That isn't the look I want to portray.

I want the P and downplay my percieved "assets".

In a culture like the UK, more people wear suits everyday to work. So suit game can work better in that environment.

My personal experience.

I'm blue collar but give me any excuse to put a suit on a will, I love wearing a suit.

I don't believe most of the psychological studies (in terms of how well they do them) but assuming this one's good it's either because they make me more powerful or because I grew up on a steady diet of mafia flicks.

Suits are lingerie for men, and fine watches are their jewelry.

Most important is that the suit fits. Even a fitting cheaper suit is better then a non fitting expensive one. For me a suit is a business tool and I like it. A confident person will have this aura anyway but its true that people react different to you when you wear one. If it fits to your personality / style then its even better. Still its for work and I don't see the point to buy super stylish fashion suit when it get worn out anyway.
Same for buy a pair of 600 € shoes or similar stuff. When you get into the suit world you don't need to get everything at once. Its more a level up time by time till you find your unique style.

We will stand tall in the sunshine
With the truth upon our side
And if we have to go alone
We'll go alone with pride

For us, these conflicts can be resolved by appeal to the deeply ingrained higher principle embodied in the law, that individuals have the right (within defined limits) to choose how to live. But this Western notion of individualism and tolerance is by no means a conception in all cultures. - Theodore Dalrymple

The power is within you.

Getting results make you feel powerful.
Banging hot chicks attracted by your personality and game makes you feel powerful.
Being healthy and fit gives you actual physical power.
Having cash money reserves and no debt makes you feel powerful.
Being smart does as knowledge is power.

Do look well and be groomed to improve results. But relying on some peace of clothing is a bad habit. You should make your clothing look good, not the other way around. The end goal is that internal power, that can not be taken off you or get soaked by rain.

Fake it till you make it, but after that you don't need a suit.

Fully agree with this.

Blue collar men have mostly been well dressed whether it is their Sunday best in the 1930s to the working class hero Brit look in the 1960s.

Anyone who doesn't do suits is mad.

Suits are for bitches that are forced to wear them by their boss

A good form-fitting suit (along with the rest of the package: good shoes, belt, socks, etc) is like seeing a woman with a great tight dress on, hair/make-up done right, and is wearing heels OR a woman who dresses with some serious style from head to toe. Even if she is only a bit above average looks wise, your mind instantly correlates certain positive thoughts and expectations and you end up likely awarding her extra points; both in looks AND personality perception.

If you saw the same chick without make-up, in sweat pants, and wearing flip flops, that same chick would lose a few points on both fronts. This is all pretty obvious. The same generally applies in how women view men when it comes to clothing.

From my experience, only three things clothing-wise generate noticeable positive responses:

1) Dressing down in gym clothes and showing off figure.

2) Dressing up into full package custom suit or high-end GQ casual style.

(and to a less extent)

3) Wearing a t-shirt with something noteworthy on it (band, symbol, etc).

Anything outside of that and you just disappear into the sea with everybody else.

But bar none, the most noticeable clothing style that generates positive attention for me is a great suit. I gamed for so long WITHOUT a suit that once I finally started wearing one, it felt like I had cheat codes in a sense. The difference was that significant.

WAY WAY MORE: Hard eye contact, girls touching me, and compliments/openers by women.

SO many men in America can't dress for shit in general as it is. Many more that wear a suit look like shit. Pants too long/short, jackets too big/small, styles way out of date, square-tip shoes, super obvious cheap materials, grossly mis-matched colors/elements, too tacky, giant billowing shirts, etc. I'm not perfect but it only takes a little effort to cut above the vast majority of suit wearers in the US.

A man that has game, a decent body, and rocks a good custom suit can do A LOT of damage; especially in certain environments. No two ways about it.

Suits, that's a damn good looking suit, that's what I'm talking about. Day game is easy mode when you go out looking like that. No mater where you're going, it makes you standout as someone successful and important. It lowers a woman's defenses causing them to assume (rightfully so in most cases) that you're not trying to chat them up forever because you come across as having shit to do and needing to be somewhere.

And I am honored to be in your signature.

Wearing a custom suit is even better, too many guys these days wearing suits that just don't fit and they end up looking like clowns. If you wear a custom suit and go out by yourself to a place where suits are acceptable but rare, you're gonna get a bunch of attention in a positive way, since you're basically conveying that you're a positive person who gives zero fucks.

I would hate to pay big bucks for a suit then gain another 15 lbs from working out and then not be able to fit in it anymore...

I have an off-the-rack suit that is okay that no longer fits me since I started lifting seriously. I'm in the market for a new suit or two now.

Don't need to bother if it's bespoke !

I have a suit that is virtually identical to that one. However, the shoes and socks are very next level. I hope to reach that level one day.

Unfortunately, it's about the hardest look to pull off. But if you can, you can get a lot of millage with it.
