Celebrities now using old flip phones

To protect their privacy from further cloud leaks, celebs are using old style flip phones instead of smartphones. Since most American girls are intent on doing whatever their favorite celebs do, can this be the possible start of a new trend that can benefit us in the long run? Or will it be impossible for girls to say no to Facebook/Tinder apps?

Some boldface names from Hollywood and high fashion are using clunky old flip phones instead of smartphones, Michael Musto notes in The New York Times. Stars like Scarlett Johansson, Rihanna, and Kate Beckinsale are walking around with LG clamshells and other vintage 2000s cellphones, as are Anna Wintour, Iggy Pop, Musto himself, and politicians like New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio and Sen. Chuck Schumer.

Most celebs have a few phones. Business and maybe 2 pleasure phones. Any going with 1 flip total, must really feel snakebitten. A smartphone with no data plan, and a good password, is safer than a cheesy flip as long as the WiFi is turned off.

That, and they're assistants just do all their texting for them on a separate phone. Hah

They're idiots for saving photos of themselves on servers not in their control.

They can still use smartphones, just keep the damn pictures on the phone instead of "the cloud".

Yeah, that's what Chapo Guzman basically did.
Of course, if someone is really really determined, nothing electronic is secure. As he found out much to his chagrin.
Apparently preppers go for surplus encrypted German military field phones. They look a bit clunky though, and I think you need to communicate via a dedicated pairing.
It is amusing to think of celebs lugging one around though. It would be like the Lethal Weapon cellphone.

I can't see this making an impact. Although it'd be nice if it did.

I've actually met a decent amount of hipsters who use flip-phones and candybar-phones to be ironic/hip. More guys than girls though, I think not having a smartphone is too much for the average girl today to handle.

If celebs really wanted to be secure they would switch to this method.

The link took me to a fake "flash player update" page and immediately downloaded "Installation.exe" on my desktop using Chrome in incognito mode.

Anyone else have this happen or is my system compromised?

The choice between the smartphone and blindly following celebrity trends is an easy one, even for the most basic of bitches. Celebrity gossip is a hobby for her, but she loves her smartphone. It's the purest love that many women are capable of because the smartphone provides her with a constant dopamine fix. She will not give that up for privacy. Hey, if her nudes leak, she might get famous on instagram.

Don't think so. The attention whoring capabilities that smartphones provide basically make any hot girl a pseudo-celebrity (one girl I went out with recently has thousands of followers on instagram).

They aren't gonna give that up.

Yeah, except that didn't work out for them either.
The most secure way that is realistic is single use burner phones and couriers or in person for important stuff.
However, if you catch a federal case, none of that will do you any good. They have a huge box of investigative tools to get all the evidence they need once you are in their crosshairs.
And if you are involved in the business, no matter which particular product you choose, after you get to a certain level, it's not a question of if you will get caught, it's a question of when.
Even if you are the most careful person in the world, and are lucky enough not to catch a retirement bullet from one of your coworkers or rivals, at some point in your career, someone beneath you will get caught and will give you up, or give up someone closer to you, who will then give you up.
About the same time a legal marijuana business I was involved in had multiple locations shut down due to some permitting issues, I was presented with a very lucrative opportunity to get involved in an illegal interstate business.
I thought about it, looked into my future, and didn't like what I saw.

I have been saying and noticing this as a creeping trend for a long time now. I've notice this come up in Toronto now for the last 8-10 months. The trend now is to go back to flip-phones and Blackberrys. One part is privacy but the other is economics. Your frail Iphone will crack and break and its to costly to always repair and replace. A brick like a old Blackberry can go to hell and back and still be fine.

I recently went back to a Blackberry myself. It is less hassle and it does what I need it to do. Especially here in Canada with oppressive cell phone costs, nobody wants to dump $300 for a new Iphone, 2 year contract, that is going to break and/or become obsolete in less then a year.

Its getting to the point Backberry is waking up from the dead and realizing this trend by re-releasing its classic Blackberry with the qwerty board.

Blackberry for all its blunders, its phones were stable, secure, and durable. It has always run a fort knox network and if you have a older version it isn't privy to the same spy junk like Androids and Iphones.

Plus its good for game. A few years ago it was easy targets for me to find broke broads whom still had BlackBerrys. Now its back again and is easier to spot broke broads whom are down for a good time and less pretentious. What screen is she going to dig her face into? She will look like a fool randomly scrolling her Blackberry as a means to avoid social interactions. Its a good filter/screen IMO to use to talk to women.

Its not even that easy any more. Smartphones now track and monitor everything you do and so do majority of the apps that cross monitor.

The "Cloud" just transfers ownership of content, the phone it of its self is still tracked, monitored, etc. Yes it isn't best to make nudes on your phone but it goes beyond that now.

Its a habit that is good to shake. Smartphones are nothing more then spy machines, and have ruined a generation of women into making them into attention seeking zombies.

I worked in corporate mobility for a short while and it's definitely true that the old Blackberries and flip phones are making a return, at least in business. BB10's and some of the older models are the Fort Knox of smartphones, but you'd be surprised how many prestigious law firms still send legal documents through WhatsApp. MDM and security solutions (MobileIron, AirWatch, etc.) are also standard fare now.

The biggest driver for many companies is actually hacking from China and Russia. When huge corporate mergers are on the line, security is crucial.

As far as the private sphere goes, narcissism will never be traded for privacy/security. I'd expect a "modern" flip model to be developed though - I'd certainly buy one! Smartphones are shitty for browsing, all I really need are texts and calls on the move.

I'd love to give up my iphone. It seems overkill.

What do you guys recommend if all I do on my phone is call, text, maps, and camera?

Most people probably don't care/notice but look at the apps you download and look at all the permissions they have on your phone. Most apps track your identity, location (even if you keep your GPS turned off except when you are using it), contacts, text messages, pictures, and camera etc.

At the very least you should turn off cloud sync that both Apple/Android have on their phones to not store your information on their servers.

I own a q10. It's absolutely one of the best phones I've owned to date. I personally hate large touch screen smartphones and hate typing on a screen. I refuse to dump my keyboard. The q20 is the better phone to get though once it is released. They fixed all of the small annoyances from the q10.

The carriers killed smartphones and mobile technology by metering data. Fearing going over your 2 or 3 gb limit is killer. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing the return of the landline. I loved not having a cell phone and being unreachable.

I still have the grand fathered unlimited data plan from VZW. Accounts like mine go for $300 on ebay.

They ended up metering data because hackers (everyone's favorites) were dragging, commandeering, and over saturating the available throughputs from towers. Then you had the media nuts, downloaded GBs worth of movies that further sank it.

That's one of the reasons why Tmobile had to back off that when they first allowed unlimited data. Now they all throttle various stuff.

That's bunk. The carriers loathe upgrading their services. I have no problem metering data for high bandwidth users while still maintaining an "unlimited" data plan yet with brakes when you consume over X amount. This was a money grab pure and simple. The current LTE infrastructure can support massive speeds even in highly saturated markets. Maybe back in the 3G days this was an issue, but LTE resolved it.

It's not bunk. I'm not a CCIE but I know enough about networks to know that even if you buy 100mbps downstream, you are still in a pool with many others. Buying it dedicated is the only way and even then, their engineers have to make sure different fiber trunks will not pull down others. That is basically in MPLS and WAN territory. Which = $$$

I do agree that it is greedy to sell all these services and not actually deliver it's full capability. While technically possible to separate out per client, the cost of doing so, is prohibitive. So the problem isn't really all that straight forward. The is one of the reasons why net neutrality is an issue.

Also abusers (hackers) are always pulling down entire towers/infastructure for a variety of reasons. DDOS, file transfers, exploits, various phone system attacks. There is a website that even has a live map of DDOS attacks in realtime accross the world. These attacks hurt data off towers as well. I remember one guy years ago, gave me a demo on how to pull down 1GB per second off a custom android phone he had. He said he is on a shit list from various providers.

I used to carry one of these until damn Sprint shut off the Nextel network [Image: angry.gif]

Now I carry another moto on Verizon, in homage to my beloved i325 picture that antenna on this phone (it does fit):

I do own an Android device, but it has a data only plan so I only use it for texting and Tinder, etc. I'm grandfathered too, on an unlimited unthrottled plan with LTE that AT&T only sold for about 4 months in 2010.
