In any discussion of big asses, you have to define the "terms" well.
When I praise a girl for having a big ass, it's implied that she is not fat, that she is relatively slim.
Here is a pretty extreme (and amazing) example from the ass thread:
That's my ideal body for a girl - tall, skinny arms and waist, and a huge ass. An ass basically can't look bad if it's big and the girl is slim.
When guys rag on big asses, it's usually because they're picturing a FAT girl.
I agree the face and youth is paramount for beauty, especially for a long term relationship. But every girl can work towards a better ass and get results.

How is this "hope for America?"
The focus on the butt is one of convenience for women. They've gotten much fatter and the ass is the one place you can point to as a positive when you gain weight as a woman.
If anything, I think this is a sign we're devolving into a Third World society (there was a previous thread on here long ago about this, so it's not my idea).
The way I see it is like this:
Butts: signify the primal and are preferred by very low class men and women.
Breasts: signify the maternal and are the preference of men from blue collar backgrounds who might be insecure and looking for mother figures (i.e. "I don't care if she's fat -- look at them boobs!").
Legs: long legs are a sign of good breeding and point to classiness in a woman.
Legs were a big deal in the 1980s. But we had a different society and different breed of woman than. They were bred to be leaner, for one thing. Back then, a fat girl making a video like "All About That Bass" would have been laughed out of town. Now she's a celebrity.
This is not the sign of a society that's healthy -- in any sense of that word.
I'm all for slumming, but to see the entire country go in this direction is disheartening. It's also annoying when The New York Times puts its stamp of approval on a trend. There's usually an ulterior motive. See my sentence #1 for that motive.

This has been long coming.
The breakthrough pioneer was Sir Mix A Lot's magum opus "Baby Got Back" of course. To this day whenever I am on a dancefloor and this song gets played - and it always does - all the girls go wild, start grinding hard and singing along.
Twenty years of hip-hop culture permeating American society has taught us all the glories of DAT ASS. I welcome this trend. This is yet another example of African-American culture spilling over to White-American culture.
I think another reason is that naturally big boobs are just rare. Asses are more abundant, easier to achieve, and more enduring. That's why most of my guy friends say the same thing - ass is necessary and breasts are like the icing on the cake but not as necessary. What other choice is there?
Legs have been overshadowed in America which is unfortunate. I was never a big legs guy until I went to Europe, which forever traumatized me. Now I cannot be attracted to short girls anymore, like I used to be. Seeing so many long-legged girls over there forever altered my tastes.
So a lot of this stuff is just the effect of what you’re exposed to. Same with race. When I grew up in a really White neighborhood, those were the only girls I liked. Then I lived and worked in a Latina area and guess what? I developed a Latina fetish.
This trend just highlights how easily humans are influenced by environment and media, even when they think they are strong-willed.

I think DOBA is right. The problem with this trend is that it can validate fat girls.

* As far as I can tell, this kind of self-absorption has no precedent in pop music. The Beatles had long hair, but didn't sing about it. Elvis shook his hips, but his songs weren't about that. Hell, even Madonna, queen of narcissism, sang songs directed at others, not herself.
A society in which women sing songs of self-love, IMO, is in a dire place and is going to create little monsters of its girls. As Roissy once wrote, the problem with women is too much self-esteem. Thank God I came of age in an earlier era. I can't believe I ever complained about Mariah or Alanis.
