Expat Poll - Do you plan on moving back?

I spent 4 months in the Philippines the first time I went and 2 months the second time.

I could have stayed abroad indefinitely, but I chose to come back in order to work on being able to live abroad indefinitely at a higher income bracket.

Now that I'm back in the U.S., I've spent all my time here working on increasing my location independent income, so I can have the freedom to live anywhere I want, and very comfortably.

I'm getting close to my goal.

That said, I would consider living in Austin if I was married, it's a beautiful city.

The Hill Country is an amazing place as well. You can have a nice house with a farm away from the city and it's congestion along with "nice conservative folks" that RVFers rave about. Not cheap, but damn driving thru those twisty roads during sunset sure is amazing.

@ Onto

I'll be leaving myself in late Oct or Nov. You plan on staying in Manila for awhile or aren't you sure yet? Anyway, wish you the best of luck on your journey.

While most people here would focus on about the negatives of the cultural aspects or dating aspects of the USA. I would live to focus on the very important financial aspects as well, which especially applies for location independent entrepenuers.

Even if suddenly USA became paradise, I would have to pay $20k+ more in taxes on my online business as I would no longer qualifying for the FEIE

Staying abroad I save money 5 different ways

1. No car, gas, insurance etc.
2. No lease
3. No bills
4. Lower general cost of living staying in poorer countries
5. Much lower taxes taking advantage of loop holes like FEIE and others

I stash thousands of dollars away each month towards my future, approaching tens of thousands of dollars as my business is rapidly growing.

If I live in New York City to maintain an acceptable lifestyle all the money would go towards cost of living and whatever is left over would go to tax, leading to an inevitable cycle of making money and spending it.

If i lived in the USA I would have to either drastically lower my lifestyle, or basically not save any money towards my future. Neither sound very good as I want to build such a massive nest egg that by the time I'm 35 i'm basically retired and to do that with passive income I have to keep pumping money into my savings.

Money, or the need of it and the need to make it is one of the many ways society controls us. The sooner your passive income from your savings is way higher then what you would make from working, the sooner you are free to worry about other shit. Its not that money is "that" important, its for the reason that its not something that you want to focus on your entire life that is best to knock that shit out of the way as fast as possible.

If you can do it while maintaining a good lifestyle, even better, and living abroad allows for this if you work online.

Also find the USA boring as fuck. Also dating market for very short men is awful in USA, or maybe just the dating market sucks in general. Not that i'm swimming in pussy in Mexico or Brazil but at least I have a fighting shot. Actually take that back I am swimming in pussy when in Mexico lol.

Also add to the fact that most cities in the USA have weather that is either way too hot or way too cold a lot of months.

I could still tolerate all that but I couldn't tolerate paying tens of thousands extra in taxes fuck that.

I made a recent trip back to my home country, the US. Observations:

1. American television and news is worse than ever. You have to spend time away from it to see the scope of the brainwashing.

2. Americans eat too quickly, just to get the meal over with. And dinner at 5pm -- what?!

3. Americans overplan every moment. A weekend with friends had not only an hour-by-hour agenda but was followed up with a post-mortem report, describing everything we had done. The "work hard, play hard" philosophy is evident.

4. Americans will say "sorry" if you step on their feet.

5. The American convention of not including taxes in the listed price is idiotic.

6. Immigrants do the jobs that high school and college kids used to. No wonder kids have no work ethic.

7. American elites and not-so-elites have no idea how the unwashed masses live or think. The divide is greater than ever.

On the positive side, American customer service is something I sorely miss. In the US, I made a free appointment to have my laptop looked at on the following day. The repair was done two hours later. Please please let's export that around the globe. (Also, great pizza.)

None of these are particularly original observations, but I can't unsee them at this point.

Visit maybe,as it's been 6 years now since I left. But I sure as hell do not miss the collective stress, paranoia, viced air and street danger of everyday BS As.
Technically I was born in the USA but that is a place I feel even less connected.

Then again almost everyone in my clan has been some sort of drifter. Guess we Don't develop strong affiliation to any cultural setting...

I have lived 4 years in US and now 3 years in France. Though right now you would think Europe is not the place you wanna be, I wouldn't trade it for either my home nor the USA even if there was a migrant horde beating down my door.

I miss some of the freedom in USA (if you can imagine something, you can probably buy it) and the ingenuity and efficiency of its people (all those DIY attitudes) but at the same time I cant stand the hypocrisy (political correctness) and the women.

You've got 100x more chance of getting killed in a traffic accident in Vietnam than getting caught in a bombing in Paris. TBH, Viet gangsters would straight up beat any terrorist senseless if they think of doing anything funny. Also, assuming you dont die from cancer and pollution first. I miss and crave the food back home so much but I knew that if I was to eat it on a regular basis I'd be better off pouring lead into my belly.

I dont plan to stay indefinitely in France, but I probably will not come back home any time soon. Maybe eventually.

It's almost like with girls. Once you have banged a certain number of sloots you have trouble settling down. Once you've lived in many countries for long enough, its hard to stay in the same place for long. Home is wherever I am instead.

That said, I would not burn any bridge. Eventually at the end of the day you need a place to come back to. Keep your passport, your land & home.

There are middle-ground countries which do compete in many areas. The Czechs compete with Germany in auto and mass transit engineering these days. Tallinn, Novosibirsk and St. Petersburg are good places to develop IT products. Singapore and HK are very strong in the funds management business.

The West is rich because it managed to drive productivity in all areas of the economy, but that isn't as important in today's globalised market. You don't necessarily have to develop your product in the market where your customers are.

Hello DaveR. I wish you still remember this posting.
I'm considering moving from Australia to another country for meeting people from different parts of the world (particularly women).
I'm working as a programmer, wondering if you would tell me a little more details about Tallinn, Novosibirsk and St. Petersburg.

These places already have a lot of programmers and local wages are low compared to those of western markets. For that reason, they're good places to develop products, but I wouldn't recommend moving there as an employee. You'll be at a strong disadvantage due to language and legal status (you'll need work permission as you're not a citizen).

I left Mexico 5 months ago to study a master in Sweden. I have been making myself that question, my life was pretty good in Mexico and I am not desperate to stay in Europe. I have been thinking about the cultural differences and specially the fact how liberal the women are here, that I don't really see myself in a future relationship with a swedish woman for the long run, not an ethnic swede but maybe a immigrant background one. time will tell.

What's the Mexican fascination with Scandinavia, especially Sweden?

Methinks it's Mexicans long to be white blondes and want to "purify" themselves.

Disclaimer: I'm of Mexican ancestry and love Swedish bishes but like you...I have no desire to be there. Who am I kidding, I want to be there.

If you asked me six months ago my answer would have been a resounding Fuck No.

But who knows what's possible with a Trump era. I definitely feel American pride I can't ever remember feeling, even if I'm in Ukraine where everyone believes he wants to help Putin "takeover".

I still have no plans to ever return, not even to visit. In fact anytime I hear American English on the streets here in Kiev a cold shiver of resentment creeps down my spine.

No plans to ever return but I'm waiting to see what happens to Hilary, pizzagate, the CIA, Julian Assange, corrupt media, etc. After a thorough swamp draining and a purge of the left and their rinos I might consider visiting for a week.

Why would you stay anywhere "long term" without picking up the language? Especially an easy one like Spanish?

1.5 years in, still no.

Haven't even visited the US since I left.

I'm glad Trump's in, and I voted for him, but let's see what he does.

A couple of years is a long time to wait for pussy that may or may not improve.

Expat Poll - Do you plan on moving back?

Lived abroad for 13 years, now living in my home country in Scandinavia. I have a good, secure job here that offers a lot of freedom and flexibility, and allows me to travel 4-6 months of the year.

Would prefer to live in a poosy paradise or be a digital nomad, but I'm noticing that I'm starting to get too comfortable - too lazy to pursue my goals of establishing a sustainable location-independent business, because I have a decent paycheck coming in every month. I also need to improve my fitness, lose weight, and improve my style, but as I get laid on my travels anyway the incentives have not been strong enough to really spur me into action. In other words, having some access to money and pussy now is holding me back from living the life I want and getting even more money and pussy later. Not sure how to overcome this, any advice appreciated.

Before coming to Sweden I was already over the obsessed with blondes phase all latinos go through at some point of their lives. I am specialising in sustainable infrastructure, and Sweden is tops; I am actually impressed the huge amount of projects, regulations, and developments related to sustainability. Overall Sweden is ok, if you can handle the dark and cold winter and well yeah as a latino, I am drowning in pussy with minimum effort. BUT you arrive to that moment that you start thinking about stability and the fact being independent in the swedish society (plus the feminism a little too) make things complicated. That's where my doubts are in general.
