The Fantasy of the Cat Lady Destroyed

Not surprised in the least. Having grown up with both cats and dogs, it was obvious to me since being a toddler that cats are just self-absorbed, manipulative pieces of shit. Dog's on the other hand are astoundingly loyal.

In fact, I'd argue that part of the attachment between cat ladys and their cats stems from similarities in personality. These types of women are damaged goods, and have an inability to love.

The similarities are endless:

Manipulative. Check.
No loyalty. Check
Will throw you under the bus in the minute. Check.
Will eat you (cats in death or women in divorce.) Check.
Will run away if given too much attention. Check.
Lounge around, and get fat. Check.
Lazy. Check.
Only nice when they want something. Check.

The list goes on and on...

I'm not much of an animal lover myself but I've always found cat lovers to be a different breed in a negative way from other animal lovers. They take being emotionally dependent on their pets to an extent that I don't really see with other pet owners. For example I had a roommate in college that was a cat lover and he would actually straight up talk to his cats at home via webcam from his dorm room computer. On my Facebook it's the cat owners that constantly flood their feed with pictures of their cats. I can understand wanting to have a profile pic of you and your pet but I don't really get the point of constantly posting new pics of your cat in 5-6 pic bursts or creating entire photo albums just for pics of it.

I've also noticed how caustic a lot of cat owners tend to be. I don't think it's a coincidence why the internet seems to be have a big obsession with cats. Internet culture tends to attract the type of people that are also cat owners: sarcastic, snarky, bitter, basement dweller type people. I'm willing to bet that a vast majority of Tumblr social-justice pansexual chicks and their fedora, Reddit user cousins that have pets most likely have cats as pets.

I think it's kind of ridiculous to assign human characteristics onto an animal, be it a cat or a dog. Cats are not "self-absorbed" or "manipulative". They're just....cats. Nature has made them what they are. By the same token, dogs are not "loyal" or "loving" or any other human-based quality you'd like to attach to them. That being said, I like cats and their reserved nature. After a tough day's work, the last fucking thing I need is some clumsy-ass animal bumping up against my balls and trying to lick me.

I love dogs for this reason. Some people call them stupid, because of their attachment, but their IQs have been demonstrated to be twice that of cats. Dogs, unlike modern women, understand the value of contributing to a community.

Suits is correct on the relative intelligence of dogs and cats:

Quote:Quote:

In the late 1970's the psychologist Harry J. Jerison developed an alternative measure that he called the Encephalization Quotient or EQ. It is a mathematically sophisticated comparison of the actual brain weight of an animal compared to the expected brain mass for that animal's body size. This compensates for the fact that bigger animals tend to have bigger brains and basically shifts the question to one of whether the animal has a larger or smaller brain size than what we would expect for an animal with its body mass.

Based on the encephalization quotient, the brightest animals on the planet are humans, followed great apes, porpoises, and elephants. The dog is close behind elephants in its EQ. Descending down the list we find cats lower than dogs, followed by horses, sheep, mice, rats and rabbits. As a general rule, animals that hunt for a living (like canines) are smarter than strict vegetarians (you don't need much intelligence to outsmart a leaf of lettuce).

***

However a real surprise occurs in some recent data provided by Suzanne Shultz and Robin Dunbar at Oxford University. They wondered about whether there had been evolutionary changes in the Encephalization Index. For example, when we domesticate animals, especially a companion animal like a dog, we are placing new demands upon it. Some of these demands are social in nature, such as understanding human communication gestures and words. Dogs are subjected to more of this pressure than are cats. Thus it might be expected that dogs would show a greater rise in their EQ than cats. This was verified by the Oxford researchers using 511 different samples ranging from extinct species only available as fossils, up through current living examples. Thus it appears that based on their EQ dogs are becoming progressively more intelligent over time while cats have remained at much the same level of mental ability that they had when we first domesticated them. This means that not only are dogs smarter than cats, but the gap between the species is increasing over time.

I agree that American catwomen tend to be off-putting, but it seems that this is a localized phenomenon (Western). EE girls, particularly Russian, tend to love cats and in Russia virtually every household has one. My ex was Russian, 8/10, feminine as fuck, and guess what: cat lover. We had 2. I dont know, I guess cats have a bad rep in the West for some reason. I see a lot of dog worshipping here.

This thread is not a hate thread on cats. It's just pointing out that a cat is not reciprocating live to the cat ladies who adore them.

There is even the myth (or truth) about cats killing babies. Cats dgaf about anyone, and their owners are just chumps.

Rottweilers are dogs from hell. I almost died when two of them got loose in my neighbourhood and went looking for trouble, back before I was a teenager.

I still get very uncomfortable around these useless brutes. For every story about them being sweet family dogs, there is a story about one who was a perfectly sweet family dog until when day it freaked out and mauled a small child. These dogs were and are bred to be horrible creatures and should never be around anyone under the age of 16.

There does seem like there is a lot of cat hate, applying morally questionable traits like a lack of loyalty, manipulation etc etc to an animal that has had no reason to develop other traits.

Cats served the purpose of killing rodents back in the day, rodents that would carry disease and eat produce meant for humans. It's been theorised that this is why Egypt and other ancient societies worshipped cats. But today, that's not really necessary. Illl never understand why people like cats. I get why some people don't like dogs, they can be too much work, very annoying, destructive if not trained properly. But a cat? I just don't see the appeal. I guess they're cute, but fuck, tic tacs are cute, ugg boots are cute. Just get them. Maybe it's a projection of their vanity and narcissism? Can someone elaborate as to why people like cats?

While it's true that cats are less attached to their owners than dogs, don't have any illusions about dogs: a starving dog will devour your rotting corpse just as fast as any other animal.

The history of cats is that they came to us, and domesticated themselves as an evolutionary strategy because, even though they don't have as much "consciousness" or what ever you want to call it, as we do, they saw the connection between the mothering sound of a mewl and getting fed.

It's no surprise that car alarms sound like babies crying.

My opinion about cat ladies and their problems is not their election of cats. I just a tranference. They use cats like the kids they choose not to have. They choose to ignore their biological imperatives, so they found a re-enplacement. And not just with cats. Ther are "crazy ladys" that have those small freaky "rat dogs", or the ones obsesed with horses ( i knew one, a very old hag how treated her mare like the daughter she never had.

@Kimber: I can not talk for everyone. In my family we had both cats and dogs, but i found myself prefering cats. They are not so "needy" like dogs, but they were there when i needed them the most.

This happened to someone I knew in college; he overdosed on crack in his apartment, and his two starving dogs started to bite and eat him. Thankfully his girlfriend found him and they got him to the hospital. He lived and last I heard he was trying to become a cop.

If house cats suddenly grew overnight they would start killing people for fun. You wouldn't see that behavior with dogs. I'm skeptical of people that love cats.
