Illmatic. Going to have Sturgill playing in the car for a while I think. I've always liked outlaw cats like Cash and Haggard, and the more mainstream but still real as fuck Hank Williams, and only recently have I discovered some of these younger guys who are keeping the tradition alive.

Sturgill is dope. On the classic side I just a heard a great tune by Faron Young. I think he wrote a song or two for Elvis.

I've had Sturgill on heavy repeat since you posted this. I'd heard his name thrown around a few times in the past, but never gave him a listen until last week.

A Country concept album, I'd never thought I'd see the day! Everyone needs to give A Sailor's Guide to Earth a listen from start to finish.

Man I just saw that Guns N Roses is playing with Sturgill in Little Rock and Denver, guy has really made it. Glad to see he is getting the recognition he deserves...

Here's some other good shit though.

Isbell sings this one. I actually just bought Jason Isbells new CD "Nashville sound" and it fucking sucks, guy decided to do a "concept album" for the Democratic Party. Sad!

I actually have just been blasting the Black Crowes first Cd lately, SHAke Your Money Maker. From 1990. What an unreal CD, every song is good. Probably too Southern rock n roll for this thread and it would be a complete detail to post a song but man what a gem. It sort of reminds me of GnR Appetite for Destruction, just a total masterpiece of a debut album.

I got a list of what I call "Americana." Some is country, some is "alt-country" (i.e. real country), some is folk, some is something else entirely.

Folks have already posted guys like White Buffalo, Chris Stapleton, and Johnny Rebel. I'll post what I got.

Chunnel you should check out Sunday Valley, it was Sturgills band before he got famous. Outstanding...

Sadly the CD "The wind and on to Heaven" is impossible to find, you can either rip the songs from YouTube to MP3 sites or just do what I did and get it from this reddit thread. I just had it sent to my burner email and extraction was easy from there on to my iPhone.

BTW if you like All around you, you'll get a kick out of Dwight introducing Sturgill at the most recent Grammys.

In the grammy vid I thought he was just fucking with everyone playing lefty at first, then realized all the string players were playing left-handed (stupid sneaky mirroring).

If only his original band was on vinyl.... I'd pay good money for a copy of that.

I'm a big fan of the underground country and Texas music scenes right now. Can hardly stand most of what is on the radio today, but thats just my opinion, but theses band put on amazing shows in small venues usually for cheap ticket prices. Here are some big ones right now:

Cody Jinks- One of the hottest acts out right now, always puts on a great show. All his songs a great, made it hard to pick just these 6.

There is a hidden song about 30 seconds after Alone which is great too.

Tyler Childers- I've only known about him for 6 months or less and he's blown up in that time, sell out alot of show in bigger venues!

Porter Union- previously the Cole Porter Band, his wife began singing more and more song with the band until she became basically the lead singer. This song is pretty funny, especially the end. (I actually saw this recording live) She is smoking hot and can sing.

Ryan Bingham- For whatever reason this song instantly changes my mood and gets me hyped up!

Reckless Kelly

Colter Wall - His voice is out of this world (saw this live too)

I'm just a jaded old man so I prefer country music back when music was music man!!
Late 80s-90s country singers like Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, Dwight Yoakam, Randy Travis and such

The Civil Wars are one of the better male/female duo's of this generation making music.... some of there slower tunes are hauntingly beautiful

I may or may not have cried

This one is a little more upbeat. When I first saw the video I thought that was Johnny Depp

While many folks here probably can't stand "modern country", its undeniable that its the music of the America that voted Donald Trump in. Its one of the last current day mainstream vestiges of the heritage that made America so great in the first place. Plus, if American girls start looking like the girls in country music videos, this country would be be a poosy paradise on par with Ukraine [Image: tard.gif]!

When these songs first came out, that's when I started to really get into country. Not the best, but there's much worse out there:

In fact, when I first moved to America from China, I loved country music so much that I tried to reduce my Chinese accent by listening to country music. As I got older, I lost a lot of the my southern accent and I miss it pretty bad now. In terms of game, I find that my love of country music coupled with being an Asian guy can be a great conversation topic for chatting with conservative southern white girls, who are the best non-foreign girls in America in my opinion.

I do like that comedy bit, but either you're trolling and don't really like country music, or your idealistic nostalgia has run wild.

There's great music out there sprinkled here and there in pop country artists on the radio, with artists edging the genre like Stapleton (a bit more blue-grass country) or Sturgill Simpson (psychedelic classic rockish country), or if you listen to Eric Church, a real deal country artist who writes hits. He has stood alone in the field for the last 10 years in my opinion. I mean, the guy writes a song about his "Three Year Old", the kind of shit I hate when artists do, and it's just a great song.

Just listen to the lyrics...great song-writer. Pulling these links, don't watch the dumb videos. I don't mean they're bad music videos, I just think music videos take away from the songs. There are few artists I've seen have consistency for this long (with the possible exception of The Outsiders). I think his most recent album is on par with his first three.

The need to be wild and crazy when you're young

This is actually from his worst record in my opinion, but a great song about how we all, as men, have a dark side, that is neither good nor bad, but dark, and there's a reason we rarely show it. Took me a while to realize how great this song is. Tell me there's not Red Pill in this one.

Over there in the shadows, hangin' out in the corner of my mind
Stringing up the gallows, waiting for me to cross that line
That man's dangerous as hell, a threat to himself,
If he got out there'd be hell to pay.
And that's why, my dark side, don't ever see the light of day.

I've slowed down on the whiskey, 'cause there always comes a point
When I've had too many, tear down every wall in that joint
I've got a wife, I've got a son, that don't know half the stuff I've done,
And I pray that's the way that it stays
And that's why, my dark side, don't ever see the light of day

You can blame it on the rebel raisin', you can blame it on the South
You can blame it on the words I try to keep here in my mouth
It takes a lot to start me up, but once that hammer drops
You don't wanna be the one that tries to make me stop

All you thugs and ugly mugs dealing drugs and making noise
You can kill each other all you want but if you touch my little boy
You'll be beggin' for this bullet will be the last thing that you see
Before I let my dark side... Come out to play.

The only grace I give for a real country music hater is - and I have plenty of friends who hate it - they hate the twang. I have a friend who will go to shows because they're fun, but he just hates that southern twang so much he can't enjoy just the music. I can respect that.

Not to get philosophical, but one thing I like about country music is that it takes a fairly pragmatic view of life. It celebrates and criticizes both the wild party on-the-road single-life of a singer and the down-to-earth settled family man.

Also...I've met some babes at country music concerts.
