I just PM’d this info to someone coming to visit Tokyo for a couple of days and thought I might as well also post it here.
This is by no means intended to be comprehensive.
NIGHTLIFE
Weekend is by far the best time of the week for nightlife in Tokyo with Saturday being the highlight. I have been keeping stats and all my one night stands minus 1 were from Saturdays. The one outlier was from a Thursday. This is particularly interesting as I have been going out an equal amount of times to similar venues on Fridays and Saturdays yet have never gotten an ONS on a Friday.
I haven’t checked out all clubs yet that I’m interested in but so far two have produced most results so I think you should focus on those: Feria in Roppongi and Muse in Nishi-Azabu, about a 10-15 minute walk from Roppongi station.
Both Feria and Muse are best on Saturdays. I have been to Muse several times on a Friday and it was usually pretty piss poor, bad ratio of girls-guys and vibe kind of off. Feria is best on Saturday but can still be okay on Friday as well. So I would suggest you hit up Feria on Friday and Muse on Saturday. Clubs don’t get going until late so I wouldn’t go there before 1am.
-Feria: this club consists of 5 floors with the basement/ground floor being the busiest. I normally spend most of my time on the second or third floor as I find the basement a bit too crowded but you can pull from there as well. They play RnB on the second floor and commercial dance/house on the third. Feria attracts a mixed crowd of Japanese, foreigners living in Tokyo and tourists visiting Tokyo. I would say that it is probably about 60% Japanese and 40% foreigners depending on the night. A significant number of the foreigners that go there are female so that is also an avenue to look into. Feria is relatively expensive as far as nightlife is concerned in Tokyo which means it tends to attract a somewhat higher end clientele compared to some of the other parts of Roppongi.
-Muse: I actually went to Muse when I first visited Tokyo in 2008 and managed to make out with 7 chicks that night (including my first ever 4-way make-out, i.e. making out with 3 chicks simultaneously) but was not able to get laid as a result of the spicy ramen I had eaten earlier that night resulting in an upset stomach. Delicious as Japanese food can be, it can sometimes have unwanted side effects so watch out for that lol. Muse has one main dancefloor/lounge area, a bar next to that, and also a bar/lounge on another floor. There are two entrances to the second bar/lounge, one near the main dance floor and one close to the toilets in the first bar but they can be a bit tricky to find so just ask a member of staff to point them out to you. I have met girls in all 3 areas so you should check all of those out.
Similar to Feria, Muse is also relatively expensive resulting in a somewhat higher end clientele, and music is also similar to what you would hear on Feria’s second and third floors. Depending on the night I would say Muse is c. 80% Japanese and 20% foreigners, sometimes going so far as 90%-10%. Most of the foreigners will be white guys and there will be hardly any foreign girls. The crowd tends to be a bit younger than Feria with most people between 20-30 y/o. Youngest girl I pulled from there was 22, more than 10 years younger than me, so don’t let age get in your way. I sometimes watch what the other guys are doing in there which usually isn’t a lot. I sometimes see the odd pair of Japanese guys do cold approaches. Most white guys there either focus on getting drunk or on standing by the bar moving their head to the music and acting like they think they’re James Bond.
Muse was closed for a while and has long had a reputation for being an easy place for a foreigner to meet Japanese girls. From what I understand from guys that have lived in Tokyo longer than I have, before its closure Muse was a great place to meet easy Japanese girls, but ever since its reopening a lot of those “sluts” haven’t returned unfortunately.
I have been there a fair number of times now on a Saturday and on some nights it felt like it was slut central and other nights it was pure shit, where I was making approaches like there was no tomorrow but still went home with my d*ck in my hand. So if you’re there and you feel it isn’t happening, don’t feel bad, might just be another bad night and Feria isn’t far away so just go there.
In terms of midweek nightlife action, I’m enrolled in a language school here which starts at 9am Monday to Friday so I haven’t been going out midweek all that much, apart from the odd Thursday. IME the bars/small clubs on the Roppongi strip that I will describe later on would be good places to go to. There is also a British style chain of pubs all over Japan called Hub which tend to be good places to meet Japanese people with an interest in foreigners. Just be careful you don’t spend the evening talking to a Japanese fanboy geek; there are quite a few of them. Personally I have not had that much luck in Hubs but other people I know have. From what I’ve been told the Hub in Shibuya (there are 2 in Shibuya; I’m talking about the one closest to the station) is the best one to go to. Dreambig is another RVFer in Tokyo who has a lot more experience with Hubs than I have. He speaks fluent Japanese which obviously helps a lot.
MY M.O.
I have mostly been rolling solo in the clubs here. I have developed the following method which is by no means scientific or full-proof but has produced some ok results so far. I tend to stay at my place in Shibuya until around midnight, just doing some personal things, listening to some music, having a drink or two etc to get into the mood.
Then I go to Shibuya station and catch the last train (differs per line but most stop going around 0.30am) to Roppongi. By that time it’s still too early to go to the clubs so I normally check out some of the bars on the infamous Roppongi strip. Some of these will have a small dance floor too. I normally see which place is busy and where cute girls are walking to and check out those. Ignore the Nigerian touts that come up to you btw. A firm “no, thank you” usually does the trick. Those guys are actually good to ask for directions if you’re having trouble finding a certain place. Some of those bars will be on the actual strip itself, others will be in a side-street. I don’t know all the names of the ones I have checked out but they would include Jumanji (bit more of a small club that gets going early), Greenland and several of the bars that used to be called Gas Panic before they were renamed. I’m sure you can find out on google what the current names are. Like I said, ask the Nigerian dudes if you’re having trouble finding a specific one.
I normally hang out in this area for an hour or so, have a couple of drinks, chill out, don’t really do any approaches unless I see a really hot girl. On several occasions I met a girl in one of those bars that I ended up taking home so it’s definitely possible to pull from those places as well.
Then around 1.30 or so I would go to Feria/Muse/other club. IME prime pulling time is from 2.00am onwards. I don’t see the point of going to a club at 23.00 buying overpriced drinks when the action doesn’t start until way later. The good thing about Japan, as opposed to most western countries is that clubs are easy to get into; you don’t have to worry about being by yourself or not having a girl with you. They let everyone in, provided you’re not dressed like a tool of course. Bring ID with you as well.
In terms of getting with J-girls, a couple of pointers. The Japanese as a people are not big on public displays of affection, e.g. kissing in public, hugging etc. In clubs, however, those same societal rules don’t really apply or at least not to the same extent. All the girls I have taken home I was already getting pretty physical with in the club; dancing, grinding, putting her butt in my groin etc. I had already kissed all of them (with the exception of one) in the club and played with their boobies/butt. With about half of them I also put their hand on my dick and put my hand on her pussy in the club. What’s great about Muse is that you can meet a girl in the busier area where the dance floor is, dance for a while, and then suggest to go to the bar area in the other room to talk where it’s a bit quieter. If it’s already getting kind of late, there should be a booth available where you can sit, which is the best place to get intimate.
Assuming that’s all going well, I then suggest we “go to Shibuya”. It doesn’t really matter at that point if she thinks we’re going straight to my place or another bar/club in Shibuya. I keep that bit vague. If it’s all going smoothly I get the taxi to take me straight to my place. If I feel she needs to develop a bit more comfort with me, I take her to a bar for a drink and bit of dancing before going to my place. One bar I’ve used a couple of times is Scramble. There isn’t anything spectacular about the place only that it’s very close to the station and fairly close to where I live. More importantly it will still be open at that time and there won’t be that many people and you don’t have to worry about some other dude going after your girl.
You mentioned in your PM Shibuya is one of the areas you’re considering staying in. That would be my advice, is worth a couple of extra yen.
D2 locations
I don’t know if you will have enough time to go on dates here but I normally take mine to an izakaya. There is a chain called Doma Doma that I usually go to. They have 2 restaurants near Shibuya 109, one on either side. I normally go to the one south of Shibuya 109 which tends to be quieter. It’s relatively inexpensive and has somewhat of a high-endish vibe so it’s a good place to take a girl. If you want to have a separate table, best to reserve ahead of time. I normally arrange to meet girls in front of Shibuya 109; everyone knows it, so it’s easy to find.
DAY GAME
I haven’t gotten great results with day game so far but while you’re in town, why not have a go. From what I have observed the areas with the highest concentration of hot girls would be outside Shinjuku station (east exit), Shibuya station and the area around Shibuya 109. In Shinjuku station, if you go to the east exit and then walk to the Kabukicho exit but instead of going up the stairs walk straight on, you will end up in an underground retail area with around 30 shops or so. There you can see how hot J-girls can really be. A lot of the shop assistants are dressed like they could be prostitutes – awesome
ONLINE
I have fiddled around with japancupid, okcupid, badoo and tinder and IMO it’s not worth your time so I wouldn’t bother with it.
FOOD
You can read about all the wonderful food and restaurants they have here on google and wikitravel but below are some tips that might be helpful.
-if you’re on a budget you can try out the gyudon (beef with rice and onion) restaurant chains that are all over town; the biggest one is called Yoshinoya.
-lots of good/cheap food options in the convenience stores which are literally everywhere. 7-11 is my favourite – you should try the onigiri (rice ball) and corn dog (called “American dog” in Japan) there
-Ichiran is a well known ramen chain from Fukuoka; they have two outlets in Shibuya, one near the station. Very tasty and a different experience from most other ramen places I have been to
-CoCo Ichiban is a well-known Japanese curry house; tasty but always makes me want to take a nap afterwards
