There's so many Thailand threads here I'm burnt out on the place and haven't been there yet.
Thailand is in the Top 15 most visited countries in the world. There's about 20 millions inbound tourists in Thailand each year (which means about 50 k people arriving each day - with of course variations between low and peak seasons), maybe 1/4 or 1/5 of them being sex-hungry tourists and hardcore sex-tourists. Go there solely if you enjoy overrunned destinations. If you fancy asian chicks, better venture beyond the frontiers of the mass tourism meccas - Mongolia, Khirghistan, Uzbekistan, ect come to mind.
I live in BKK and I pretty much agree. Far too many white people in this country. I wish they would bulldoze the red light districts, enforce the laws regarding prostitution (I.E. get rid of it), and run out all of the fat and slovenly sex tourists.
It will never happen though because there is far too much money at stake and it's been like this for too long.
First things first - not many seem to be listening in this thread. Rionomad, ThailandRockstar, and myself all live here and we're telling everyone that GIFT is paying too much - HE IS. Like I said, there are some very nice places out there, pussy pads, for 10-15K. I've lived in approximately a dozen places since I first moved here and the most I paid was 35K. The place was massive and every time women walked in they said, "Oh my Buddha."
I had an apartment for when I when our team was in training camp. This was about 18 months ago. It was new and ran 9000 baht. It was a studio but I went looking for places and there were many places that ran 11,000 baht-13,000 that were top-notch places. I chose the 9000 place because I was also paying for our house and was basically only using the place as a headquarters.
Now I live in a 4-bedroom house that runs 7000 baht a month. It's 10-15 minutes from the MRT. Not a prime location but still, the point is that GIFT may have an excellent place but he's paying tourist prices.
As far as what Rionomad wrote, here - here. The first place I wish they would do away with is Khao San Road. Get rid of all the tightwad white backpackers. I also wish the government would only allow people with tourist visas to stay here for a maximum of 6 months in a year. That way anyone who isn't legal can't stay. More like Indonesia, preferably.
Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan are on my list of places to go, definitely.
Honestly, I came to Thailand to live in an exotic country. It's no longer all that exotic...nothing like 20 years ago.
