Just wanted to respond to something Roosh posted on twitter and I don't have a twitter:

An average NFL game: more than 100 commercials and just 11 minutes of play (from last season)

It's a clever measure but there's a much better way to estimate how much "downtime" there is in the NFL and that's by looking at the condensed games on NFL GameRewind. GameRewind shows each play, back to back, from the snap to the moment the play is blown dead. The length of these condensed videos tend to be around 30-35 minutes. When you watch a game in this manner, it's hard to imagine things being compressed any further. Even when I watch condensed games I pause them occasionally or switch to "broadcast" format temporarily to see replays and commentary.

Also, the broadcast format games skip commercials, so it's easy to see how long a game lasts without them, too. Last weekend's Giants/Dallas game was about 2:20. Based on the "3:10" wall clock time from the article, the breakdown might look like this:

30 minutes running plays (16%)
110 minutes downtime between plays (58%)
50 minutes of commercials. (26%)

Still a whole lot of downtime and commercials relative to action, but not quite as crazy as the article makes it seem. I expect if you analyzed division 3 college games without commercials you'd find the "in play" to downtime ratio around 1:2 or 30 minutes of plays for every 90 minutes of wall clock time. But that's just a guess.

^ I must say I did NOT care for that article, given that it provides air time to a group that wants to further emasculate pro-football by policing "foul" language in the game.

That said, the link at the bottom of the page in that article is to "The 25 Hottest Daughters in Professional Sports", which softens the blow of the preceding article significantly:

I'm glad Brett Favre could help the Saints battle the noise of the 12th man.

Agree. Still, maybe it's not as bad as the post makes it out to be but there is so much downtime during the average NFL game it's crazy. College football is bad too.

The condensed games are awesome though and really convey how many commercials and stretches of no action, replays, timeouts etc. there really are in every game. It's great to be able to just watch every play one after the other, but like you sometimes I miss stuff and have to re-wind.

Good win today by the Niners, but they are so frustrating to watch. Coverage looked shaky on defense and Kaep is definitely not playing at an elite level.

How about that vintage Gore run that won the game!
