Tips for being more frugal but having a great lifestyle

Prioritize what you want first. Do you go out every night and make it rain or get bottle service? Do you want a nice apartment? Concentrate most of your financial resources towards things you actually want and curtail spending in the areas that are not important. Frugality is more about being judicious with informed decisions rather than just being cheap and curtailing all spending at all costs. You could budget 20,000 dollars for going out, but you better have a cheap apartment, use public transport, and have your 401(k) funded. Remember just to spend money on things you love rather than random things and to invest your money at minimum into a few retirement accounts. As long as you do this within the context of short and long term financial goals you should be ok.

If you can't even afford toilet paper you're seriously doing something wrong. Not sure if this was meant to be funny.

This is similar to what I do. I budget a lot of money for going out and doing stuff, but I make sure I save in other areas. I'm not big on expensive dinners, fancy clothes, my car is basic, etc. When you don't spend much money on "stuff" you have more money to go out and experience things.

I agree that you should spend at least as much time figuring out how to increase your income as you do figuring out how to cut costs.

But in the spirit of the thread my suggestion would be to look more carefully at things you are so sure are saving you money that you don't even evaluate them. As an example: When shopping a while back I checked out the canned Tuna I had put in my trolley more closely. It worked out that the price/gram of drained weight was almost the same as the price/gram of a mid range cut of steak (A grade Beef, not Horse). Sure the steak will get lighter when cooked, and isn't as convenient as canned Tuna, but I don't know anyone who would have guessed that they are so similar in price. I don't know about you but I'd rather be eating steak than some crappy canned tuna were every last ounce of the original tuna oil has been expressed and horrible canola oil added back to make it taste like something.

So, ja, just because something seems cheap, or even if it is cheap, it may be worth your time to look closely at what you are getting and compare it to the seemingly more expensive alternatives.

Being frugal means nothing in the bigger scheme of things. Why deprive yourself in the present? As long as you're living below your means, with the intention of expanding your means, fuck frugal - I want my dessert.

If you're saying that being frugal without expanding your income isn't going to get you that far, sure, that's obvious.

However, this is a thread about minimizing expenses and if you don't think that's a huge part of increasing your overall wealth, you're lost. The maxim that it's way easier to spend money than it is to earn it is true. In our consumer driven society, it's rare for people to understand their expenses and plan them. This is a thread about minimizing expenses, not maximizing income (which is equally a valuable topic).

To that point, I also highly recommend mint.com and staying on top of categorizing expenses. It can be a real eye opener.

There are many ways to save money. If you eat a decent amount of bread, buying a breadmaker can yield you loaves of bread for .25 each and this is just one example of being able to spend a minimal amount of time/money up front for really cheap food. Another way to do this is to buy a big crock pot and make yourself delicious lunches for the whole week. I try to buy in bulk where it makes sense and cook large meals or just straight out cook in bulk (8 sweet potatoes, 8 chicken breasts, big pot of oats) for the week. I love having healthy food ready to go at all times. I save money and time and I eat healthier. This improves my lifestyle significantly.

I live near bars/nightlife so it's very easy to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars a month just going out a couple times a week for drinks or to meet up/eat with friends. It's cheaper for me to stock my bar with handles of quality liquor and mixers, invite my friends over to pre-party, and THEN go out and have maybe a beer or two than it is for me to have the same (or even less) amount of well liquor drinks out at the bars.

Buying used as others have mentioned is huge. When I moved to where I live currently I had crap furniture and not much of it. I also had no appliances. Scouring Craig's List, Freecycle (recycling network where people give away stuff that they could otherwise get some money for because they know someone is going to use it, not resell it), and a lucky moving out of the country sale (my friend clued me into), I bought a clear shelved refrigerator with ice maker, nice toaster oven, tea kettle, older washer/dryer, nice faux wood kitchen table/chairs, L-shaped couch (super comfortable, albeit older), coffee table, wood dresser w/ huge mirror, pots/pans hanging set, kitchen utensils, bread box, golf club set, etc... all for maybe $500.

I shop at clothing discount stores for jeans/casual shoes and I don't care at all that I'm in there with the poor people. If I can buy a name brand for 30 or 40 cents on the dollar because a stitch isn't perfect, what do I care?

Dates - A little time spend researching/planning fun dates that are cheap is absolutely worthwhile. I've NEVER had a better date because I spent a lot of money. The absolute best dates I've had with the most positive response from women is where I spent minimal amounts of money but I was thoughtful and planned something. I've had a girl state "that was the best first date I've EVER HAD!" after I spent less than $10 dollars, but I found a place that was super cool/fun for a first date.

I've had a multi-millionaire MILF completely doe-eyed and in awe of a date that I pulled out of my ass by using Google Maps Sattelite view and trying to find somewhere cool to look at tidepools (because all women like to do things they enjoyed as little girls) and see the sunset from, yet have a little seclusion from other people too. When parking I got confused but ended up finding another little walkway in between some gorgeous homes that you could walk to and be up on a cliff overlooking the bay, so we did that and then did our walk in a slightly different area. She assumed I was like the master of the coast or something and that I had also planned the moon being directly in the valley between the shoreline on our walk back. Take charge, have a plan, this was completely free.

I have one tip that comes to mind. For those that look to gain weight with lifting, it can be very tedious to spend money on buying chicken breasts, milk, cheese, beef etc for protein. Besides having some of the above, if you are just looking to add calories to your diet so that you can gain, buy peanuts/almonds in bulk. At my location, I believe I get 100 grams of honey roasted peanuts for 77 cents (plus tax lol). 100 grams of that is close to 500 calories. Albeit it contains a lot of fat, it contains a decent amount of protein to supplement your diet as well. Besides, fats from peanuts are healthy, and as long as you are at least moderately active, a diet high in fats can be beneficial rather than detrimental to health.

Compare that to buying a protein bar, spending money on a post workout shake, buying energy granolas and such foods that make good post workout meals. These offer similar amounts of calories/protein, but come out to anywhere from ~3-6 dollars.

I'm sure there are many viable options for snacks/meals that are cheap out there, but this has got to be the best snack for the price. Only downside is that it isn't very filling.

Tips for being more frugal but having a great lifestyle

One more thing that I've done since I've lived for many years in the same place (front half of a house, 2 bedroom just off the beach and the local bars/restaurants/shops), my rent has never increased and I've locked in a lease with the landlord that secures myself as the main tenant with the option to sublet to whomever I want (as long as the landlord gets to run their credit). In addition, I wrote into the lease that I get exclusive access to park behind the two 1-car garages (of which one is mine). This took some convincing of the landlord, but the effort was worth it. See below:

I won't share my exact rent figures here, but let's say for example that my rent is $4,000 / month for the 2 bedroom place and 1 car garage. Instead of splitting that in half with whichever roommate I had prior, I listed the other room as $2300/month when advertising for a roommate with the stipulation that I get the 1 car garage (roommate can store some beach type stuff in there if they want) and the use of the parking spot behind the garage.

I went from having to share the 1 car garage (w/ my former roommate who was on the lease) and the parking spot behind (w/ my former roommate and the neighbors who have the other 1-car garage), to now I have a 1 car garage and parking space all to myself (crucial in at least half of the year). In addition, the roommate I sublet to effectively pays 15% of my rent. Both he and the prior roommate that I sublet to were happy with the arrangement and while I did take on some additional responsibility (if the roommate bails I am still responsible for ALL the rent), I came out a huge winner. It's not passive income, but it's basically a passive win every single month for me. I love it.

If I ever decide to travel, I could rent out my room and MAKE money while gone. Sure, details are key and you have to find the right person to sublet to, but who cares for such great flexibility, my own garage + parking spot, and my rent GOING DOWN all while continuing to live by the beach (for what I consider pennies on the dollar versus buying).

I am not totally certain, that credit cards, are as widely used in all other parts of the world, as it is in Denmark or Europe, but if you are getting used to buying things of your card, you never see yourself "losing" anything. A simple trick; as withdrawing from an ATM, and using cash instead of card, can seriously awaken your awareness, about how much you spend and on what, since you then physically, are giving something away, instead of just swiping a card, and pressing a few digits on a keypad.

A 25lb bag of rice from a warehouse store or an "ethnic" grocery store should run $10-15. Even if you eat 2 cups of rice (measured dry) everyday (unlikely) it will last you months.

Get yourself a $20 rice cooker to avoid stove-top messes.

Get a venison connection. You can get great deals on months worth of meat and it is clean, local and cheap. Ask a hunter friend if you have one.

Get a water filter and bottle your own in glass bottles. Buying bottled water everyday is ignorant. Or let tap water sit out in the sun with some lemon. Oxidation will filter out the bad stuff from the tap.

Use people. Or to put in a better way, make your presence worth something. People will pay for you to be around if you make them happy. I get a lot of things for free. I go a lot of places on the arm. I smoke weed whenever I want and never pay for it. I drink at places where bartenders hook me up. Or I drink around people who get bottle service or buy me drinks.

I go over people's houses who always have food and don't mind when I eat it.

I visit friends in other states and countries and stay at their places instead of getting hotels. (Yes I still end up smashing lizards)

I don't mind keeping a 7 in the harem if she brings shit to the table. Like rides places, liquor, food, drugs, clothes, connections etc. Shit I've lived off stripper girlfriends for months at a time and gave them nothing but dick in return.

Become friends with people who work places where you want discounts. I have a few spots where I can eat for free cause I know the chef or waiter.

When I do pay for food I eat smart. Two bananas and 8 walnuts for breakfast is $2.00

Breakfast is always fruit for me and is always under $3.

Pound of roast beef with some celery for lunch is $5 bag of raw spinach is $2.50. Big cam of 40g protein tuna is cheap too.

If you drive, use cruise control. Saves a lot on gas.

Workout at a playground. A steady diet of dips and pull ups will have your physique looking better than your mon Wes fri bi's tris and back kind of guy.

I smoke about 5 cigs a day. All of which are bummed from friends or strangers. Usually females who I then order to give me their number.

Cut corners. Find ways to beat the system.

Rob a weed dealer who shouldn't be dealing weed. Don't use force and don't use a weapon. Just tell him its yours or get it fronted and never pay him back. Flip the pack and double up. Rinse wash and repeat. Dynasties have been started like this.

I've been dead broke many times in my life. Especially early on in the game and I did whatver to get by. I've had some of the best nights of my life with not a dollar to my name. Improvisation is key.
I've also had great nights turning into days with 10 stacks in my pocket. It all doesnt meant shit thiough. Money is meaningless to me right now. I make more in a day than I spend in a day and that's really all I care about. Connections are more important. Where there's a will there's a way.

I'm a type A who hates to lose but I'm in no way driven by making more and more money.

Having fun and being happy is all I really care about.

Which leads me to end this rant by saying, The only time I actually live by the advice I gave above is when I am broke. When I have money I spend it in ridiculous ways and I don't even care. I live everyday like its my last and know that a. money isn't real and b. I can't take it to the after life with me.

Many will disagree with that last comment and that's totally cool. I respect whatever way works for you and would never tell anyone there way is wrong. Whatever makes you happy.

Use potatoes and lots or rice for bulking in addition to proteins. You can buy them in bulk cheaply too. Also you would save a ton of money on grassfed meats if your buy the red meats in half a cow increments. The meat lasts at least 6 months in a freezer. And I think its around 400-500. Might be even cheaper if you look around. Compare that to buying meat each weak.

Tips for being more frugal but having a great lifestyle

Basically, frugal is a terrible word, no one should be "frugal" that simply means suffering to live. Instead as the paste at the bottom below its more like maximization.

Track your spending and Be honest with your spending Lots of people spend money because they get "Bored", they buy something stupid like iPhone apps, movie downloads etc. The truth is you're making these purchases because you're bored to tears.

Other examples of being honest with yourself:
Did you get a "sick car" to get girls. Yeah.. okay you know better than that you don't need a sick car. If you really need a car, it doesn't need to be a BMW Z4.

Do you buy food because you're lazy or because you're really in a rush. Most people start eating out frequently because they are "too busy" usually that means too lazy. If you work at a restaurant for a few years you'll quickly see the things that go on behind those doors is downright disgusting.

Do you buy "fancy" alcohol. This is usually a "curse" for older people as they develop a "need" for a tasty more expensive wine/beer. No need again. Only buy top shelf stuff if it's helping you get a girl or you're having friends over. Sure you can buy the expensive stuff but if its just for you who cares, drink garbage alcohol at clubs/bars its not like you should care about the taste. Alcohol is just a "game performance enhancer".

Here are some ways to change your life to make things easier.
1. Go shopping once a week on Sundays. Sundays are the busiest days for super markets so you can day game at the same time. Buy exactly what you will use for the week, no leftover food. Repeat every Sunday.
2. Stop going to eat out unless you're on a date or with friends. Always have booze at your place (good types) just in case though.
3. Look up your colors for clothing. If you find the right colors that fit your skin tone and build just go find clothes that fit and are cheap. You can mix the right colors together without going custom and look good.
4. Read. If you're bored try to learn something, if you're busy learning you're certainly not opening your wallet on frivilous spending.
5. Throw away your cable bill. I've even had people over no one really notices i don't have cable, just flip on some music and pre party + roll out. Haven't turned the thing on in years, just link it up to your computer in case.

Anyway the below reply is in the "fuck minimalism" thread as well. Basically do stuff that maximizes what you want out of life. You shouldn't be suffering, zero complaints on my end with my life style right now, just gotta be honest with what you want.

Quote: (02-23-2013 11:52 AM)WestCoast Wrote:

I would reverse this thinking to "maximization".

Ex: if you are a deca millionaire you should be running nothing but high end stuff all day and running as much status as possible to create large harems of girls.

If you are making $50K a year, going into debt for a "pussy magnet" car you are a dumbass.

I like to think of money as "how can I efficiently spend it for maximum results". This is why I absolutely love the following things:

1. Weightlifting like a monster = cost of clothing comes down because you walk around in a fitted sweater or v-neck
2. Dancing venues where drinks are strong+cheap. Most guys who are good dancers don't go to the grimey places so you can sit thee and pick off the only cute girls at the venue cost? $20.
3. Studio apartments, central location is key, a studio helps because it is already set up for sex. Hate suburbs and homes, big cities only, people get hammered and logistics better be good.
4. Alcohol and drugs = only when picking up girls or going on dates. Drinking at home with no pussy set up is a waste of health and money.
5. Cooking at home 80% of the time. Again unless you are rich there is no value in "restaurant game". So you should be eating tons of organic only vegetables and fruits. Most restaurants, even the expensive ones, are awful for you health wise

That's about it, not about "minimalism" it's about "maximizing" all of your cash. "Rich" just means happy with your life and do not have to work if you don't need to.

America is one of the best damn places in the world to acquire assets, so remember that. Combined with game + slutty girls, the choice should be to Aquire a lot of capital.

Its not about the cheapest way to get laid, it's about the most efficient way to get laid

I have a few tips but they're specific to the UK..

Grab an O2 simcard (can get them free online), put it in your phone, install O2 Priority Moments. Pretty much every week there's something new you can claim for free, stuff like coffee, cinema tickets etc. I use this all the time cause my work is based in the center of my city so I just claim anything on there while I'm working.

Check out http://bit.ly/9T1Er6, I've got some crazy deals from this site but I check it probably every 30 minutes.. I got a PS3 bundle for £150 while they were worth around £350 due to a misprice, played it for about 6 months, sold it used for £180

There are sites that give you tickets for prescreenings of the latest movies. I go see around 2 movies a month on average, all before they're out, for free. These sites pop up on http://bit.ly/9T1Er6 under freebies. You gotta be quick to get these as they go quickly in the larger cities.

Lastly, check out a site called YourVine. It's not well-known at the moment so it's a good time to join. Basically you do challenges to get free shit, but sometimes it's an easy challenge for a big reward. I had to make a couple wishlists on ASOS and got a £250 gift card for doing so, took me like 10 minutes max.

There's probably more shit I do but these are the first to come to mind. These won't really help you save money, but they let you enjoy a few treats without paying anything.

Tips for being more frugal but having a great lifestyle

To stretch income further, one thing you should not forget is to be aggressive with deducting as much of your expenses as possible if you are self employed, have a side income, even are just starting out. Taxes are our biggest expense in most cases so it probably merits spending some time thinking about, even on a smaller income.

Bar tabs/restaurants = meals & entertainment expense. Rent/mortgage- take that home office deduction. Phone bills, new laptop, internet bill - business use. Mileage, Airfare, Hotels = vacations business trips. I'm aggressive with classifying stuff as business expenses. NOTE: Not ridiculous/stupid - but aggressive.

First part of not being stupid is keeping good records. I use Expensify.com. It's is similar in functionality to Mint.com except that it generates an IRS-vetted receipt that's good for anything under $75 save a lot of time of holding onto original receipts. I still go paperless for everything else with a ScanSnap printer to PDF and use a structured naming convention so I can easily pull up a transaction.

Now, how to deduct as much as possible without being stupid/flagrant? That's up to you and your personal risk tolerance, but here's how I look at it. I'm not going to deduct every single meal I ate out/bar tab. That seems a little overboard to me. But what I will do is do an 80-20% and take the transactions that comprise 80% of my expenses on bartabs and restaurants. There's usually a pareto-style distribution, with 20% of the total transactions making up 80% of the expense for the year. So that way I'm not deducting every single transaction - but those that I do deduct pack a punch. I take those said transactions, export to excel and just run through and write some names of who I met with and purpose of meeting. Takes all of 30 min. Other stuff - my phone bill and internet access - 80% business, 20% personal - not 100%. Aggressive, but not ridiculous.

I wasn't making much money from the consulting gig for the first 2 years. In fact, I was changing careers and spending a good amount of money on educational courses/training/etc. So I took a loss on my "consulting practice" (really at the time was a joke, I made like $300 bucks my first year) against main job's income, which helped stretch a shitty salary a lot further. For 2012, I'm going to owe some tax since I made a lot more income (which is a good thing no matter how you cut it, I've more than doubled my total income in 3 years) but I'd have a much shittier tax bill more if I didn't use aggressive deductions.

For the record, I don't claim to be an expert on this. I'm sharing what I personally have done. There's probably people on this forum that are a lot more aggressive and effective with tax avoidance than I am (foreign income exemptions, etc). On the other hand, if you want to try to tell me that I'm taking a huge risk, that's fine - that's your choice and your risk tolerance. This is my risk tolerance. Everything I've done has been vetted by a well regarded accounting office so I feel pretty comfortable. If Uncle Sam decides I have to cough up a few more grand, whatever, I'll deal with it when it happens.

Roll your own cigarettes. The cigarette rolling machine you buy (if you want them looking looking like they aren't joints) will pay itself off after a couple weeks if you smoke a pack a day, and you can mix and match your favorite tobacco types and filters. You can also buy a nice looking metal pack that won't crush if you get your jacket caught in a door or something.

If you dont' plan on using the gym to game (I don't, I workout to get away from all that shit), then it's not a bad idea to work out at home or do something like Barstarzz at a local park. You might get some wierd looks, but a steady diet of dips and pullups will give you a better physique than most people who go to the gym. Sad, but true. I'll be writing an article sometime in the next year on working out at the home with a minimal amount of equipment (if I get any results from that kind of workout).

See if you can get by without owning a car. Owning and maintaining a car costs a fuckload of money.

“I have a very simple rule when it comes to management: hire the best people from your competitors, pay them more than they were earning, and give them bonuses and incentives based on their performance. That’s how you build a first-class operation.”
― Donald J. Trump

If you want some PDF's on bodyweight exercise with little to no equipment, send me a PM and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

I used to bring girls to a mansion on a steep hill on the water that was for sale. It was so expensive no one was buying it and it was in a secluded area. We'd sneak around back and chill on the patio with some drinks and a smoke and I'd bang them on this deck like it was my house.

Having worked in a brain injury unit - I'd be hesitant on recommending them. The risk far outweighs the reward of saving a few pennies IMO. Scooters are perhaps the most dangerous as you cannot hear them coming like motorbikes.

Just buy a shitty 1.3L Toyota Yaris if you want economy.

Start categorizing your spending.

Very eye opening for me.

Most of us have what are called "leaks." We spend a trickle, or small amount of money, regularly without realizing it.

How often do we buy packs of gum or a soda or red bull at the gas station for $2 or whatever? You may spend a few hundred dollars a year on bullshit that way, when you could instead buy in bulk at all once and still get the gum/soda/red bull at half the cost.

The goal is to plug those leaks.

For each guy it will be different. Mint or another program can help you find those leaks.
I usually prefer to focus my energy on generating revenue than saving but I do agree with you that everyone probably has a few expenditures that are causing most of their problems (80/20 rule). I did the math on my Red Bull and coffee expenditures last year and it convinced me to cut it out and buy a espresso machine since it was so massive. Saved a lot there with little effect on my lifestyle.

Also if you go out to eat and hit the same places often enough you can almost always get a discount or at least some additional food/service for free. This always look good when you're with a girl and they comp you the wine because they know you. And they'll usually say it in a way that makes you look good too.

Buy a SCOOTER.
Or at least a motorized bike.

Fuck cars, fuck buses, fuck trains.
Scooters are the way to go. Insane MPG. Great for pickup.

And if you don't live in a place with warm enough weather for it, MOVE.

Seriously, never ridden one, how much like riding a motorbike are they?

It's less like riding a motorcycle and much more like riding a bicycle. Embarassingly easy. My experience was solely in Vietnam (where it's at least semi-automatic).

Get rid of clothing and things you don't need. The more you have, the more you have to maintain and replace

I used to bring girls to a mansion on a steep hill on the water that was for sale. It was so expensive no one was buying it and it was in a secluded area. We'd sneak around back and chill on the patio with some drinks and a smoke and I'd bang them on this deck like it was my house.

Now that's Game.
