Anodized Aluminium: A return to the bad old days of scratchy back phones and premature ageing. And to exacerbate matters, their is a shiny under skin, which will just exacerbate it.I don't want to have to handle my phone with kid gloves. For a $749 device, I expect scratch resistance treatment at the least

Ghost Armor for the aluminum.

With Steve-O dead Apple's quality will go down the shitter real quick. Remember what happened when they kicked him out of his own company years ago? Time to sell your Apple Stock.

How do you use those touchscreens? I just got a motorola with a touchscreen and can't fucking get the hang of it it after 3 days.
Is it an iphone? No? Maybe you and Ali can start a motorola crap phone thread. Otherwise you touch the screen with your finger like clicking a mouse.

Are motorola's known for poor touchscreens or something?

I am trying to upgrade my iphone to 5.1.1 by pointing it to the ipsw file via Itunes.

However during the process I am getting:

The iPhone "Moma's iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occured (3194).

Some research says to download TinyUmbrella. I don't like running random executables on my machine. This doesn't fall in line with the steps Parlay detailed.

Parlay, what are your thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Moma

On my third iphone 5 in as many days. My verdict for now is to avoid the thing until Apple gets quality control in check.

Phone 1: Scratched to hell right out of the box.
Phone 2: Wifi stopped working less than 12 hours after I got it.
Phone 3: Working fine but the genius bar tech had to open 4 boxes before he found a phone that didn't have cosmetic defects*.

Pros: Thinner and significantly lighter than the 4S. Battery life has also improved by a healthy margin (8 hr 45 min use, 22 hr standby is what I'm averaging.) The display is larger but I didn't find it to be a game changer. The phone shifts seamlessly through menus and apps. LTE is fast, I'm averaging 25-30 mbps down and 20 mbps up.

Cons: The exterior is very vulnerable to scratches, especially on the black model. Put it in a case ASAP or risk having shiny areas of exposed aluminum on the phone from casual wear and tear. The new mapping software blows but you can put a link to google maps on your homescreen.

This phone is definitely a winner but Apple needs to fix the aforementioned quality control issues. Going to the apple store and setting up an appointment to see a tech twice in two days was a hassle.

*I should mention this is for the black model. The white model is suffering from cosmetic issues at a far lower rate.

I really don't understand the release of the iPhone 5....

I suspect the iPhone 4s will last alot and will stay the preferable iphone of choice for a good while.

How do you get replacements? Apple's always told me "fuck you" whenever I had anything wrong (even if it was a known problem) with any apple device i've ever owned.

Ordered mine with Verizon this past weekend, the 16GB black model. Got a ship date of the first week of November. Hopefully things are worked out soon. If this happens to me I'm not going to be happy at all. Apple is saying that the aluminum chipping and scuffing is "normal wear and tear". How is something that costs $649 which comes out of a sealed box with cosmetic defects normal wear and tear?

Like I said, get Ghost Armor or something similar BEFORE scratching it up. Even if you put a case on it, the thin film will protect against small granular scuffs.

I absolutely will be putting my iPhone 5 in an Incipio NGP case or something similar. I'll look into the Ghost Armor as well. The real problem is the fact these chips and dents are already on the phone when you open up the box. It's happening at the Foxconn factory in China during the manufacturing process. I'm more worried about Verizon telling me to go fuck my mother than I am Apple telling me to kick rocks. I've actually had good luck getting things (iMac) repaired in the past free of charge when the fault was clearly on Apple.

Went in to Radio Shack and they had a 16gig iphone5 sent to my house in 2 days.
I also sold them my beat up iphone4 for $115 so with the 2 year contract it cost about $90 to pick up the 5.
Awesome phone. No problems at all. Videos and web surfing are quick.

Also the Verizon ones come unlocked so once you hit foreign soil, you should be able to just get a sim card and some credit.
Getting the LifeProof case when it comes out in 2 weeks - those things are indestructible.

I've got a Verizon iPhone 5 and it was flawless upon purchase. Put a case on it though.

Bitches love iMessage.

Personally I like the new Maps app. Lack of street view is a shame but the turn by turn navigator feature has been really useful and integrates really well with iOS, listening to music while driving etc.

No, it was perfect. It's cool how it even comes charged up. Apple is about the details.

I like the Waze app for gps. Works pretty cool and it's free.

My biggest issue with the iphone is that I always ask too much of technology. Is it possible to connect an iphone to an external monitor and keyboard?
If so, would it be too much to ask that it could replace a minimalistic desktop? What can't you do with an iphone that you can do with (say) a netbook?

Hades,

I know you can pair an iPad with a BT keyboard and mirror the display on anything connected to an AppleTV, which is typically a TV, but could just as well be a monitor that has HDMI in. I have not tried this with an iPhone, not sure if it's possible.

I think I'll be upgrading my 4 to the 5 in the next few weeks. I'm planning on getting ghost armor but I'd like to get a good "bumper" case as well since the ghost armor doesn't do much for the edges. Keeping it a slim form factor is key, it's part of the reason I'm sticking with iphone.

Anyone have any good suggestions? This one looks very well made, but I'm not crazy about the wood look and having a back on the case isn't really necessary: http://www.grovemade.com/product/iphone-...one-5-case

Something along these lines would be good:

**Update - so apparently those aluminum bumpers kill reception and fuck with the GPS so that's a no go. Looking for a good plastic or rubber bumper now.**

I just recently decided to upgrade to the iPhone 5. I got it like a week ago and was at the Apple Store the next day getting it looked at. Defective camera right out of the box. They updated the software to iOS 6.0.1 thinking it would fix the camera issue, it didn't. It was a hardware defect, not a software issue. They offered me a "remanufactured" model as a replacement. For all of you who don't know what remanufactured means, it's basically just another word for refurbished. They take a bunch of defective/returned iPhone 5's, strip them down for parts, and reassemble them as "new" devices. I told the Genius at the store that was unacceptable as I had just received the phone the day before. To upgrade to the phone through Verizon I had to pay $199 for the device itself, $35 just to upgrade to a new phone, and I lost the unlimited data plan I've had for the last 7 years. All for a phone that was broken upon delivery. I came home from the Apple Store and called AppleCare, who was absolutely no help. Again, a remanufactured device was offered. Then I called Verizon and because it was an upgrade and I was within the 14 day worry-free guarantee period, they agreed to replace it with a brand new device of the same model (16GB, black). The problem is I now have to wait another 3 or so weeks until they have more in stock. It might also be important to note that the phone came with a nick on the back beveled edge behind the lock button, as well as a scratch on the front to the left of the front-facing camera. I was willing to overlook those issues, however, as they were rather minor. What a disaster though. Other than that I liked the weight and look of the phone. It's definitely sleek and much lighter than the 4/4S. My advice to anyone considering the iPhone 5 is to wait another month and then try to see if the quality control has improved. People are still complaining of dinged up phones being shipped. As far as a good bumper, I do like the one linked below. I'm gonna throw my phone in a case with a Spigen Ultra-Crystal Screen Protector and call it a day. I guess the Ghost Armor would prevent scratches to the back and front, and the bumper would provide a certain level of protection from drops, though.
