I got a cheap rv earlier today. Cheap for this area ($750) with no deposit because I gotta clean it out.

First post here. Found the forum a couple of years ago. I'm now 23 years old and it's time to contribute. My failure to do so earlier was primarily due to my lack of forum worthy experiences in life. Recently left my finance job and the bullshit existence that was my life during that period and leading up to it.

Moved to Houston last month and have been working an obscure but enjoyable job. I like the city.. been tearing it up with a couple of the college age and ex sorority girls here on the side. Now looking to make some shit happen.

There is an oil and gas job fair in Lafayette, LA (couple of hours away) on Wednesday. I will report back here with my results. It will be interesting as someone with no industry experience, however I do have a TWIC card and a CDL.

For anyone that has been to one of these O&G job fairs, do you guys have any recommendations as far as what to wear/presentation, or even what to expect company wise? I'm thinking that a suit may not be necessary or desired..

Ash, the only "update" you need is the fact that a barrel of West Texas Intermediate is $106. You won't find your Knight in shining armour on this forum who will personally make sure you have a job- the ball is in your court on how to get to where the oil is and get yourself hired.

Just saw my post that Ash093 replied to- never noticed til now. I see you were banned but West Texas Intermediate is a very valuable type of oil based on its density compared to that of water, basically (Look up API Gravity). Probably the best quality oil there is, so it is sort of a benchmark for oil prices. Oil from the Bakken is nearly identical to WTI, so all I was trying to say is that the price of oil was high, so oil jobs are aplenty. It's actually quite a bit lower now, down to around $93, so lets hope it rebounds!

Pete, I'm Canadian but very familiar with the Bakken due to lots of prior work there. It is and will be hopping for the forseeable future despite my prior post on oil prices. All we need is a good carpet bombing of ISIS and the Middle East instability will make our prices skyrocket again! Take the plunge, and then look around for something that interests you. Wireline logging, drilling, well completions/service rigs, environmental (aka waste disposal), operations, oil field servicing, trucking, fuck man there is something for everyone. All will be ramping up activity once the weather turns so Oct 1 should be a perfect time to roll into town! Just be sure to do some serious research on accommodation and make sure you got money in the bank before showing up in case anything goes wrong.

I'll be flying up there with a friend. I found a few "extended stay hotels" which are about $600/week so we'll split it 50/50. Right now I'm working on getting my truck drivers license which I think it's called CDL up there. And also getting my birth certificate and other stuff one needs to be able to get a job.

Any other things you would recommend? Appreciate your advice. Thank you very much.

Just a question for the guys working in ND still. Are people up there getting laid of all over the place now? And are the wells and exploration equipment all still working pretty much as they were earlier in the year, or are things getting shut down and/or mothballed due to profitability factors now?

I've been reading that tons of people are getting laid off and the party is over due to the drop in oil, but wondering what the word on the street is.

I gotta say that the ramifications of low oil prices are going to be pretty serious in the coming months, and not all good despite making it cheaper to drive. A LOT of US job and capital growth over the past few years has been tied to the energy industry and since E&P and fracking companies are getting hit hard there will be lots of problems going forward. Lot of research people saying that up to 40% of these companies will be bankrupt by the end of 2015 if oil prices stay where they are. That means no job growth in the US in the sector, and lots of bad debt at the banks and funds. Also all the new equipment manufacturing is gone, along with all the fees and taxes paid on all this stuff.

I gotta say from what I've been reading the past few days I'm pretty scared about another crisis coming due to all this, and that doesn't even factor in the Russia wild card. China is already hitting the wall, and the last thing we needed was for the bright shining star of US economic growth to go completely in the toilet.

A small amount of frac companies also.(and they are doing mass hiring again...which is weird)
But everything else seems to be business as usual. Though people are a little nervous about it.
Jobs still outpace humans here several times over.

Dude, I just wanted to say I admire your decision at your age. I'd give anything to be in your position. Technically I recently am, but at 39 I've spent far too many years figuring why cubes suck. I'm in my 3rd week of welding school. Kudos to you for figuring it out early.
