North Dakota Oil Jobs

Suggest reading My House Has Wheels on kindle. If there's an RV (not mobile home) park with Electricity, Water, Cable and Internet, that could be a pretty good solution for housing while moving around. Only problem is most RVs aren't winterized.

"Alpha children wear grey. They work much harder than we do, because they're so frightfully clever. I'm awfully glad I'm a Beta, because I don't work so hard. And then we are much better than the Gammas and Deltas. Gammas are stupid. They all wear green, and Delta children wear khaki. Oh no, I don't want to play with Delta children. And Epsilons are still worse. They're too stupid to be able to read or write. Besides they wear black, which is such a beastly color. I'm so glad I'm a Beta."

Here's another article on the boom:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/e...story.html

There is a huge demand for day care centers. Start a chain of them... hire women with psych degrees to run it.. they're desperate for work.

That was a really good article, I especially like the quote from page 4....

`Finding workers is a challenge, too. A billboard for Precision Drilling says the company is “looking for a few toughnecks,” a play on the term “roughneck,” for oil worker. Whiting Petroleum has 180 openings in the area. “You can’t find the warm trained bodies that you need. We are in full-time recruiting mode,” said Jack Ekstrom, Whiting’s vice president of government and corporate relations......`

You know its busy when they`re just looking for `warm bodies`!

Guys, it's official. I got the offer letter of employment on Friday. I'll be a "Lead Measurement While Drilling Engineer".

1st year I'm supposed to make between 70-80K then the second it's supposed to jump to close to 200k

I work 2 weeks on 2 weeks off for 12 hour shifts. (I'm told the most I'll have to work at a time is 6 hours and then I just have to be within one hour of the rig in case something happens)

It's work that mostly takes place inside and so I won't be killing myself outside in the cold during the winter.

This is probably the best possible scenario I could have hoped for. I'm supposed to start training which lasts 3 months on August 1st in Utah. The only thing that can possibly stop me now is passing a background check and I should be all good with that.

All that said, I don't recommend coming up here unless you have the income to sustain yourself while waiting for something to pop. I was getting pretty frustrated as you all know. This place is a shithole with basically shitty people (although I did meet some great ones).

Anyway, I'm pretty psyched, those 2 weeks off are going to be me traveling to some badass places!

Congrats man. Be sure to let us know how training goes and come back and report on your experiences.

There is almost no retail space ... There's also almost no housing.

Fisto is getting rewarded for hustle. I skeptical about his $200K forecast for next year. Maybe that's what experienced people are making this year, but they were in the right place at the right time.

Consider the other opportunities. Offhand, roughnecks will spend money on gambling, booze, and women. Private stripper parties have merit, perhaps BYOB. Real estate has got to be good if you can get information and deals. Fisto has the looks and game to get local girlfriends, so he doesn't need to fly out all the time. It seems to me that social contacts could be levered during his off time to create opportunities.

In five years, Fisto is not going to be a petroleum engineer. He might be a manager of some sort. But I think he has entrepreneurial inclinations. Find out what they need up there and supply it in your off time.

Also, I have concerns about finishing education. Soon there will be a more stable labor supply, along with Starbucks and McDonalds. They will stop hiring "warm bodies" and screen based on degrees. You could get a cushy higher-paying job with a degree.

Divorco, those cushy higher paying jobs are dead, and the ones that are left are gonna be given to dumb broads with masters degrees in fuck-all studies so that way the company meets their quota without risking anything of merit.

Congrats man. While you have down time, I'd research flyer talk , blogs like the frequent miler and so on so you can set up systems to rake in the frequent flyer points. These guys get around $30k cash equivalent per year in airfare points. But they do things with gft cards and so on, and spend active amounts of time on it. You might get around $10k

I could make a killing up there with my background. Already got the emails and didn't even send my resume out. You guys would shit if you know what they are willing to pay me to fix electronics inside of a shop. Unfortunately I'm "banned" from the U.S. porque taxes until October.

Can't go to Canada due to a DUI, so that leaves Brasil, the OZ, and China.

If you're smart and motivated, you'll run rings around the oilfield trash. I worked with one of the premier companies in the Gulf, the one that raised the Hunley, and know the deal. Having a marketable skill is imperative in this world.

Don't believe me? Ask Houligan Harry what the world is paying for diesel mech. 3 of my friends/coworkers are almost in Aussie now. And getting paid HUGE.

Way too caught up on the degree bs man. I work 40 hours a week and dwarf the enginneers salary who hired me. Job opportunities all over, to include ND. With my experience I would
Be majorly underpaid at 100k in ND and I've never stepped foot in a college classroom.

Well, I am a week away from deciding if i go to ND. I just need to see if I get a real cool job in my field first. I find out in a week or so.

first off mad respect for guys who work in places like north dakota on oil rigs. while jobs are not guaranteed if you are young, decent shape, drug free(employers try to weed out meth heads), and hard working there are jobs to be found in north dakoka, alaska and other cold middle of nowhere states. just be prepared to freeze your ass off and be away from nice looking women while you make bank.

thanks for fisto and others for sharing their experience. its a motivator for guys who are willing to take risks and make a financial payoff without starting a company or working in corporate america.

The New York Times -- which suddenly cares deeply about the plight of working-class Midwesterners -- would like to remind you that the Great Plains oil boom is a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad thing.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/14/opinio...inion&_r=0

It's pure jealousy. The people at the Times cannot stand the fact that vo-ed students are making more money than they are (and in the deeply unfashionable oil and gas industry, no less), so the Times has been running a series of pieces about how such non-Times-approved lifestyles are actually bad. (There are, by the way, almost no facts in the video. It's a mood piece, but there are no numbers, no evidence supporting the woman's claims, little except scenic photography. But the purpose of the piece was to allow Times readers to say, "Oh, I saw something in the Times about how bad it is to live in the oil towns, especially for women." So mission accomplished.)

Red Staters with no interest in college are making good money in their twenties by working in brown energy -- and this irks some people at the Times no end.

This kind of thing seems right up my alley. Having the toughest time finishing out my degree because I'm so disillusioned with school and the uselessness of it. I think something like this, like legitimate hard fucking work that actually pays well, would make me a much better person. Something I'll think about over the next few months.

In mid 2012 I was getting emails from heavy hitters like Calfrac for solid FSR jobs, probably starting @ $30 hr, or over. Fast forward to spring '13, and the only companies that were responding to my search was shit companies wanting me to work on Xerox machines or Halliburton for $15 hr. Fuck is wrong with these people?

Things have slowed down, and two guys I know up there never moved into better jobs, and their hours have been cut to shit. They are stuck in a rut. You can still get a good job, but need to know someone. In my professional opinion, look to the GOM or W Texas to cash in on the front side of those booms.

Not too unrelated, but do you foresee the type of high-paying OCONUS work that was plentiful in the Bush era making a return? Man, some of those dudes caked up HEAVY. I'll never forget how my former landlord was ballin' hard from Iraq DOD money. With a devoted wife and growing baby, he stashed most of his bread and easily became a millionaire while still relatively young.

OCONUS money is gone, and I predict that next round of war the guv will cap salaries for contractors. Unless its real bad conditions, or you have a extremely niche skill, long gone are the days of 1K per day salaries.

@Ali-B What kind of intel do you have on the Gulf of Mexico opportunities? Are you saying they've started to extract natural gas from beneath the Gulf of Mexico?

They're fracing, and I believe now with tech, its more profitable to sell the natural gas and process the byproducts. But they will be 50k tradesmen short by next year. The worldwide energy sector is hard up on help, that why the salaries are so big here, Canada, and the OZ. For GOM jobs, start searching on rigzone and oilcareers. A lot of these places will hire on the spot, so stack some cash and hit some job fairs in Odessa or Houston, Tx, or anywere around Lake Charles, LA.

If I was on the ground right now I could give you guys a place to stay and help get you in the door. But I'm stuck as a mother fucker right now.
