When someone first contracts the virus their viral load will shoot up to ~2million copies per ml of blood. During this stage (before the body produces antibodies) they are highly contagious and any form of penetrative sex carries a high risk of transmission( 20%+).

After the body identifies the virus then it will start to produce antibodies and the transmission rate falls rapidly. Then for 3-10 years the transmission rate will be quite low (assuming not on HAART) and will increase gradually each year until progression to AIDS.

So those numbers are very misleading. If you are involved in a promiscuous scene like the nightlife scene and you have unprotected sex with someone who just seroconverted then the risk of transmission is very very high.

Those statistics are actually dangeorus and were partly the reason why I was so blase about protection.
