I saw Slayer opening for Marilyn Manson. No moshing though cause it was in an amphitheater with bolted down seats. I, along with a good portion of the audience bailed after Slayer was done with their set and it was time for MM to begin their set. As my buddies and I were walking out we heard a guy scream "MANSON SUCKS"

I saw the Melvins last night and there were a lot of girls there. I even saw two walk in ahead of me that were dressed as if they were going to a dance club. I'd say most were with boyfriends, but they looked like they were into the music too.

This is kinda the reason why I only wear my Guns N' Roses, Ramones and Rolling Stones t-shirts if I go out with a 'rocker' look.

Most girls won't know who the hell Deftones or Queens of the Stone Age are, especially in Taiwan, so if I wear one of these t-shirts it might not make the desired mental trigger. My Deftones t-shirt has a giant white pony on it, if a girl doesn't know who the band is, it might just make me look like a horse enthusiast. In Taipei, no one has even heard of Nirvana, (although the Linkin Park show is nearly sold out despite the $200 (US) ticket price.)

On the subject of live bands, the best band I've seen is still Rage Against the Machine back in 2010. Refused were pretty damn good too.

Also, nice picture MustardTiger. Misfit Love is a MONSTER!

I wouldn't lump them all in one group - deathmetal, pirate/viking/dragon slaying metal, slipknot clown metal, give the genre a bad name. Mostly goth dudes with a few introverted fatties.

Tons of hot girls at hardcore/metalcore shows. In Europe, many of them wear completely normal clothes and you'd never expect they listen to it.

I also agree, kirk isn't the best. But when it comes down to who's best, its all really a matter of preference. There really is no BEST.

Both technically and melodically, Marty Friedman (Megadeth's lead guitarist during their pinnacle) blows him out of the water.

In terms of image, absolutely.

Does Guns N' Roses count? I see alot of giels wearing T Shirts from that band. I think the young kids of today see Guns N' Roses as the new Rolling Stones. Just a band that stands for total awesomeness all round.

A lot of people in my age group wear shirts of Nirvana and the smiley face, even though Cobain died before they were born.

I was talking to one kid with the shirt about how I think Love killed Cobain, their reaction: "Who's Courtney Love and whos Kurt Cobain?"

Great opener for offending and ending the conversation with hipster girls. "Oh cool, you have a Ramones shirt! - Name three of their songs."

I've seen Nightwish twice and they were the only "metal" concerts i've been to where quite a few girls were normal and attractive. Part of the reason is Nightwish is not hardcore enough to draw in rebellious girls with family issues. Their lyrics are pretty sentimental and the songs aren't overly technical like many other metal bands, which makes them much more accessible to women.

I don't know if you can even consider Nightwish a proper metal band. They're basically somewhere between Disney Metal and pop now.

Listen to what they sounded like 14 years ago, there was definitely an effort to water down their sound and make them as pop/rock oriented as possible as opposed to the Neoclassical influences in this video:

I know what they sounded like 14 years ago, I have heard all of their albums. In my opinion Nightwish didn't get good until Century Child.

They are definitely not a "proper" metal band, and that's what i like about them. When i grew out of my metal phase, the only 3 metal bands i still had regular interest in listening to were Opeth, Alice in Chains and Nightwish. The main reason i stuck with those three is they never had any interest in being heavy just for the sake of it. I also don't consider pop an insult. There is good pop music, and bad pop music. Tuomas said himself that composing his 5 minute songs are much harder than composing his 10 minute songs.

Anyway, the reason why i brought them up is to enforce the point that girls don't like the kind of metal that is typical in the genre. Girls don't care about lengthy guitar solo's, they don't care about overtly violent lyrics, and they don't care how underground a band is.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm a real metalhead myself, though I'm the kind of metalhead who keeps it to himself usually. I don't have long hair, I don't have a big viking beard and I don't wear band merchandise. I've long since grown past that superficial bullshit, but I still love the music. We're talking about real metal here, like Ajattara, Naglfar, Blut Aus Nord, etc. I also used to play in a real black metal band for 5 years as a guitarist, but that's also a thing of the past.

Most girls I date don't know about my love for metal, I usually keep it to myself, but this one girl I dated and currently am in a LTR with told me she likes metal. I did not expect that from her truth be told. She doesn't look like a typical metalhead or metal groupie and she's far from an attention whore. She looks fairly normal and her wardrobe is rather up to date with the latest fashion trends.

Not to mention that I know plenty of girls who actually know more about metal than I do and are more into it than I ever was. Some of these women are friends (with benefits) of mine who I know fairly well. I doubt they are fake or posers. So I'm not sure if the OP is 100% correct.

I don't know where you come from, but over here the hardcore/metalcore listeners are the most obnoxious "metal" listeners I know. Nothing but posers, losers and attention whores. Not to mention that hardcore/metalcore is more often than not rather low-quality repetitive and predictable crap. Hardcore/metalcore the McDonalds of the metal genre.

There's some very interesting bands that have grown out of the Metal scene, but I can't say that I get too worked up about Metal as a whole. I had a roommate in college who was deeply into Metal, and introduced me to a lot of bands I enjoy, but I just felt like a lot of bands and songs didn't have enough of a distinct identity to them to really enjoy it. Probably due to the whole subculture purist mindset that seems particularly strong in Metal communities.

Metal listeners tend to be pretty intelligent and discerning about music in a way that I generally am not. I think listening to Metal and learning to appreciate some of its elements improved my musical taste, but in the end I'd rather listen to Classical or ambient or something.

Spot on.

I used to be one of those "purists", but when I actually got to play in a metal band myself, I quickly learned that such a mindset severely limited my creativity.

Also; kudos for liking classical and ambient music. Those are among my favorite genres next to metal.

I used to listen to Oceanborn over and over again in high school. I stopped following them actively after Century Child even though I did hear about how Tarja booted out of the band and then all the complaints there were over Anette. While Anette definitely didn't have the same power and technical ability that Tarja did (Anette can't hit the high notes when she sings Ever Dream live) I did like her voice. I think what really turned people off of her is that she had a very pop music style voice and as well know, metalheads pretty much hate anything that is connected with pop.

I finally bought their debut album, Angels Fall First over the summer and really enjoyed it. The album made me wanted to start getting back into the band again so I started to see what they were up to these days and I saw that they had yet another new vocalist - Floor Jansen. I saw her perform Ghost Love Score live on a Youtube video and was pretty floored (har har). Personally, I think she's better then Tarja since she can do the epic vocals as well as her but at the same time she also has more of a rock/metal vibe that Tarja always lacked.

Check out her chops at 9:20...amazing. Her headbanging afterwards was cool too...had no idea it was possible to headbang in a feminine way lol

Yeah metal is definitely one of the most elitist scenes there is. I'm sure most metalheads hate hipsters but ironically enough no other type of music fans are as hipsterish as metalheads. I know this because that's the exact type of fan I was back when I was the most hardcore into the music. Back in high school I had the long hair, was rocking Cannibal Corpse and Iced Earth shirts, and even played in some shitty ass band that broke up after our first show. I would always make my disdain for mainstream music known whenever possible - especially for the nu-metal bands like Korn and Slipknot that were big at the time and I pretty much refused to get into most other music even though I would make random exceptions.

Just look at the Youtube comments for any metal music video or song. Half of it is going to some guy ranting about how much he hates Justin Bieber or One Direction and the other half will a person mocking another person for listening to "poser" bands followed by that person showing off by listing all the bands that he listens to (the more obscure the better of course).

As for listening to other genres, I always got the feeling there are certain genres that are acceptable for metalheads to listen to while other ones are off limits unless you want to be abused with comments of being a poser or mallcore kid. Acceptable genres would be classical music, old school hard rock, ambient, blues and maybe jazz. Some black metal guys seem to like electronic music too. Unacceptable genres would be pop, rap, R&B, or pretty much anything that's on top 40 radio.

Pretty much every video on youtube has retarded people finding dumb things to argue about so I don't think this really proves anything. Youtube comments are like the Wal-Mart of the internet.

Back to the original topic, can you guys picture a feminine girl listening to Impaled Nazarene?
