Hammett is generally considered one of the best guitarists of all time. From my perspective, his solos in "Fade to Black" and "Master of Puppets" are on another level. In particular, his solo in "Fade to Black" is incredible.

Compared to so many other guitar virtuosos out there Kirk really can't compete. However I do agree completely with his solos in many of Metallica songs, they are just the way they should be and nothing can take that away from Kirk.

Kirk is a really really good guitarrist, you can clearly see/hear it by his solo composition in many songs, his playing speed and use of different picking techniques through the years. His live playing is also really good. You don't have to like Metallica to recognize this.

Also Kirk is one of many early influences to young guys just starting to play guitar. Ask any veteran experienced guitar player about his early influences, chances are Kirk is on his list.

Agreed! There are so many guitarists out there that are way better than Kirk. Kirk is a great guitarist, but by no means is he among the best guitarists in the world. Exceptionally talented guitarist include : Zakk Wylde, Malsteen, Steve Vai, Marty Friedman, Slash, Michaelangelo Batio, Van Halen, Alex Skolnick, Jeff Waters etc
If you listen to their solos and compare those to Kirk's solos, you'll understand what I'm talking about.

I also agree, kirk isn't the best. But when it comes down to who's best, its all really a matter of preference. There really is no BEST.

Zakk Wylde sucks balls. Even his name is [Image: gay.gif]

He lives in the shadow of Randy Rhoads. Sure he can play all the old Randy songs note for note perfect but he's horrible at writing his own music.

Anyone who argues that James hetsfield is better than Kirk hammet clearly doesn't know what they are talking about. I cold argue that Earth is flat but that wouldn't make me right.

Comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges. James Hetfield is arguably the greatest rhythm guitarist ever. You don't hear that mentioned very often, but it is true. Kirk Hammet is pretty much a pure lead guitar player. He plays little or no rhythm. Hetfield plays some lead, but his lead playing is generally melodic and pentatonic-based. He cannot and does not play the type of leads that Hammet does. Each of those guys serves an entirely different purpose.

There's no way to measure who is a better musician. It's all a matter of taste. And like the old saying goes ...There's no accounting for taste.

Album sales mean shit. Michael Jackson sells billions of albums in Japan. They love him there. Is he a talented singer and musician? Sure. Would I ever buy any of his albums or go see(previously) him in concert? He'll no. Because I can't stand his style.

You like what you like. It's fun to discuss the subtle differences between artists. Everyone does it. Maybe you'll get turned on to something new in the process. That's the whole point. But it's pointless to say any one musician is better or worse than any other.

People will always have personal tastes, but the musician that is the most successful is considered the best.

Yes. I am going to start posting on the Lindy W forum and become a staff writer at Return of Fatties. My posts will run every Sunday during brunch hours.

Speaking of metal: I propose a RVF metalhead meetup at this festival

http://www.noctisvalkyries.com/

its fucking insane. nearly all the headliners are the top of their genres. Blasphemy started an entire genre as did Candlemass. Carcass spawned a ton of copycats and Gorguts flipped death metal on its head.

Plus there might be THREE hot chicks in the entire venue

Blasphemy shows always inspire some quality violence. I'm down. Blasphemy is one of the few extreme metal bands that cultivate a violent and satanic message and image they actually live up to and practice. Lots of of documented stories about Satanic grave desecration at Ross Bay Cemetery and tons of brawls the members always got into.

Oh shit, Revenge and Possessed are playing too. Awesome

I was hardcore back into metal back from when I was middle school up until like college...still really enjoy the music though my tastes have expanded quite a bit since then to include a lot of stuff I would have been embarrassed back to be caught listening to back in then. In high school I was known as the metal guy - walking around with my Slayer "South of Heaven" and Cannibal Corpse t-shirts and long hair. I can tell you that the metal scene is mostly a massive sausage fest and like any other male-dominated subculture, a good percentage of the few girls who are involved in it are there because they know just by virtue of being female they are going to stand out. A good example of this is all the girls claiming to be "nerds" and trying to attention whore in the video game scene these days.

The truth is that women generally don't develop interests in hobbies, skill sets, ideas in the same way men do. Men, when they become interested in music, sports, or hell even video games usually also develop a desire to MASTER it in some way - whether directly or indirectly. Mastering used in this context doesn't mean necessarily mean directly performing the activity they are interested in. For example, a guy who is really into sports but isn't athletic himself might instead just work on "mastering" sports in an indirect way such as memorizing statistics and plays. A guy who doesn't have musical talent himself and is incapable of directly mastering music might instead do something like memorizing the discography of his favorite band and learning about the trivia surrounding the recording of his favorite songs.

Women on the other hand, when they get involved in the scene that surrounds a particular band, a sports team, or whatever don't care about the actual band or team or whatever. What matters to them instead is the SOCIAL elements of the scene. A good example of this is sports, particularly with college football. Any time I see females in a crowd at some college football stadium I already know half of the girls in the crowd have no idea what's going on the in the game outside of the fact that the ball being closer to the other team's goal = good. For them, the enjoyment doesn't come from the game itself but from feeling like they are part of something and that they are bonding with other people. The fun for them is everyone wearing the same colors and cheering in unison with other people. A guy might watch a game by himself on a couch while drinking a beer if for some reason he can't go out with buddies to watch it. Can you imagine a girl doing the same? When a girl bangs the alpha male of a particular scene whether it be the quarterback of a football team or some local popular hipster guitar player she doesn't care about his actual accomplishments or skills. What actually turns her on is the man's status in the scene and how he is respected and exalted by other men.

Good 'ol Arthur Schopenhauer actually talks about this in his infamous "On Women" essay:

"This makes them incapable of taking a purely objective interest in anything, and the reason for it is, I fancy, as follows. A man strives to get direct mastery over things either by understanding them or by compulsion. But a woman is always and everywhere driven to indirect mastery, namely through a man; all her direct mastery being limited to him alone. Therefore it lies in woman’s nature to look upon everything only as a means for winning man, and her interest in anything else is always a simulated one, a mere roundabout way to gain her ends, consisting of coquetry and pretence."

I was about to reply but this post summed it all up.

While I've never grown my hair out long, there were a few years when I would hang out at my friends' completely fucked up apartment with beerstained carpets, videogames, bongs, and trash lying everywhere, and a table set up with CDs laying everywhere. I can't remember how many nights we spent drunk and/or stoned as fuck, or on mushrooms, blasting Metallica, Slayer, Death, Dream Theater, Ratt, Scorpions, Maiden, and every time we'd just nerd the fuck out on it. Start talking about compound time signatures or ascending diminished 7th patterns (half of us were music majors at the time).

Occasionally some girls would be over, and it was weird. They'd look at us as if we were zoo animals. 9 times out of 10 the girls would leave, never to come back. Over those few years, about 4 of them became regulars. They weren't very cute but they liked hanging out with us because we were weird, wasted, and destructive.

Some nights we'd be headbanging and air guitar to Metallica, other nights we'd try to figure out the deeper meaning to a Dream Theater album (Awake, anyone?)

It was a lot of fun, but bitches don't know shit about having fun.

"...so I gave her an STD, and she STILL wanted to bang me."

99% percent of girls who listen to metal, it's because "my boyfriend got me into it." After about 14 years if going to metal concerts I feel like I can safely conclude that they're sausage parties, but I go for the music.

It's just a masculine form of music. You wouldn't expect 30 year old males to listen to Miley Cyrus unless there was something wrong with them right? Same goes for girls and heavy metal.

To give an example, this shit is like the battles from Braveheart set to music:

Would any feminine woman listen to this? Probably not. Should guys with a pair of balls listen to this? Probably yes.

I'm the vocalist and bass player for an industrial rock band. I do it because I like what I do and that I really like the music that I write, but I can attest that our scene girls are generally awful and that if I had picked a genre of music to specifically swoop girls, I'd have done something like indie acoustic rock or whatever.

Check out my occasionally updated travel thread - The Wroclaw Gambit II: Dzięki Bogu - as I prepare to emigrate to Poland.

I don't even think scene girls are worth messing with, usually. Who wants to fuck some chick who is leftovers from all the other area bands? [Image: wink.gif]

I focus my attention on girls who end up at our shows somehow but aren't part of the scene, somebody who came along with a friend of a friend or whatever... I've learned most girls could give two shits what kind of music you're even playing, there is just an inherent appeal to talking to a guy who was up on stage in front of everyone.

Finland? Then again, that seems to be the only country that has a significant of female metal fans.

been listening to and going to metal shows since around '87. we had these groupies that hung around my friends and I through all of it, metal, grunge and hipster shit. we had all of the girls who wore the black concert shirts and poof hair and hung out with us but they knew dick about music, the bands, the songs, etc etc and I would never talk to them about music anyway, they were there to smoke and drink and be rebellious. but who really cares, I have met women with good taste in music but they knew nothing about it, and had zero musical ability.

btw this NIN livestream from lollapalooza is bad as hell, definitely going to see them when they tour this year. saw them as a local band in my hometown before they made it big.

James is hands down a better guitarist then Kirk. James WRITES all of their music, AND, most of Kirks leads. When James solos, they are technically amazing melodic rhythm solo's. Kirks technicality has never impressed me, and his solos are pretty easy to play. He had one of the greatest guitarists as a teacher, but he was always a role filler and not an integral part of the band. Kirk has memorable solos, but in the same company as VH and Django.. dont think so..

Anyone here get a chance to see Slayer live during their prime?

Or any stories from favourite thrash metal shows?

I saw Danzig punch a guy in the face, he stopped the show, he pointed the guy out because he threw something, then the crowd threw him on stage while the guy was kicking and screaming, and BAM he laid the guy out and they kept playing. 1990 Supposedly his gloves were packed with metal, ha! On that bill, Danzig, Soundgarden, COC. COC was fucking awesome. Soundgarden opening, blew everyone away. Probably one of my all time best shows.

Saw Slayer on Seasons of the Abyss and Diablos, technically perfect and loud as fuck, both in a smaller club.

Metallica many times starting with Justice.

Not really metal but I saw Ice T and Body Count run security during a riot for a Janes Addition show and literally beat the shit out of many many people Compton style, that was cool. '89.

NIN ended in a riot, 1990, Trent ended up with a broken arm and they canceled the tour, watched it happen right in front of me.

The first time I saw Slayer live was in the late 90s on Ozzfest. Hanneman and King had their huge fucking Marshall stacks. I was hooked after seeing how intense they were live. I saw them probably about 5 times over the next 10 years. They really are one of the most important bands to ever play heavy music and Hanneman wrote most of their best songs, it really sucks he's dead now. Glad I got to see them live several times before he basically drank himself to death.

Never did I think I'd hear the likes of Blasphemy and Revenge mentioned on a Game forum. I've actually passed by Ross Bay cemetery. Fallen Angel of Doom for life.
