I'm sure you get your posers in any scene, but I've known quite a few girls who were and still are genuinely into heavy metal music, some for over a decade now. Also, it's a myth that metal fans are just angry frustrated boys, as there have been psychology studies which have shown that personality traits between heavy metal and classical music fans are very similar, if not, practically identical. Heavy metal is also the music of choice for the intellectually gifted.

It's all about image. While there are some, very few, girls that do like metal, most of them are just posers, they claim they do just to look cooler than all the other "conventional", "normal" chicks and because some also like the bad boy look of some metalheads. That's it.

And if you went to their myspace/facebook/whatever page you'd always find as favorite bands this huge list with all the cool and "need to like" names of the scene, sprinkled with some more obscure names that they probably found on some website to make it look like they actually knew something about the scene but then I can't remember how many times I've heard girls , not only in the metal scene but also in the goth scene saying things like:

her: band X is my favorite band ever, I love them
me: oh, cool, what's your favorite song/album, whatever...
her: oh, you know, I'm not good with names, I just like them.



It's all about image.

And then there's always those girls, and guys too, that wear band shirts not even knowing who said band is, that actually irritates me, you're not cool, you're just an idiot.

Exactly, I doubt that girl can name one Iron Maiden song, and with all those tattoos it just screams "look at me", "look at me", "I'm pretty but I'm not like other pretty girls", "I'm so cool", "look at me".

I've been going to metal shows, off and on for the past 18 years or so, my brother is really into punk and metal, not main stream stuff either, like GG Allin and Anal Cunt. He's dated some fucked up metal chicks and most of them have very low self esteem and would want him to do some nasty shit to them, one girl would lay in the bath tub and he'd take a big piss all over her! I've gone to a few shows with some guys from work in Edmonton (which gets really good tours) and they're almost always a big sausage party, a lot of poseur type people. It seems that in North America, there's only two types of metal girls: suburban poseurs or hard core ones with mental problems and drug addictions.

Now contrast that with Colombia, I guarantee you if you walk around the neighborhoods of Chapinero and Sante Fe, you'll never see so many cute, sexy girls rocking metal tees. They get decent shows there as well, Megadeath and Hate Breed played while I was there. Some of the most vile and violent sex has been with a metal girl/fetish model. She genuinely liked both metal and pain. I pull metal girls pretty easily because I truly what many beta metal heads aspire to be: violent and malevolent, and they sense that. I also know more than I care to admit about old school black and death metal.

I was hardcore back into metal back from when I was middle school up until like college...still really enjoy the music though my tastes have expanded quite a bit since then to include a lot of stuff I would have been embarrassed back to be caught listening to back in then. In high school I was known as the metal guy - walking around with my Slayer "South of Heaven" and Cannibal Corpse t-shirts and long hair. I can tell you that the metal scene is mostly a massive sausage fest and like any other male-dominated subculture, a good percentage of the few girls who are involved in it are there because they know just by virtue of being female they are going to stand out. A good example of this is all the girls claiming to be "nerds" and trying to attention whore in the video game scene these days.

The truth is that women generally don't develop interests in hobbies, skill sets, ideas in the same way men do. Men, when they become interested in music, sports, or hell even video games usually also develop a desire to MASTER it in some way - whether directly or indirectly. Mastering used in this context doesn't mean necessarily mean directly performing the activity they are interested in. For example, a guy who is really into sports but isn't athletic himself might instead just work on "mastering" sports in an indirect way such as memorizing statistics and plays. A guy who doesn't have musical talent himself and is incapable of directly mastering music might instead do something like memorizing the discography of his favorite band and learning about the trivia surrounding the recording of his favorite songs.

Women on the other hand, when they get involved in the scene that surrounds a particular band, a sports team, or whatever don't care about the actual band or team or whatever. What matters to them instead is the SOCIAL elements of the scene. A good example of this is sports, particularly with college football. Any time I see females in a crowd at some college football stadium I already know half of the girls in the crowd have no idea what's going on the in the game outside of the fact that the ball being closer to the other team's goal = good. For them, the enjoyment doesn't come from the game itself but from feeling like they are part of something and that they are bonding with other people. The fun for them is everyone wearing the same colors and cheering in unison with other people. A guy might watch a game by himself on a couch while drinking a beer if for some reason he can't go out with buddies to watch it. Can you imagine a girl doing the same? When a girl bangs the alpha male of a particular scene whether it be the quarterback of a football team or some local popular hipster guitar player she doesn't care about his actual accomplishments or skills. What actually turns her on is the man's status in the scene and how he is respected and exalted by other men.

Good 'ol Arthur Schopenhauer actually talks about this in his infamous "On Women" essay:

A man strives to get direct mastery over things either by understanding them or by compulsion. Yea, and anger is an emotion that has been repressed in men since feminism took over. Thank God for metal. Granted some of it is talentless garbage like any style. However, IMO, it takes 10x the talent and effort to perform than most other "pop" styles ever will, and it is one of the last bastions of men not yet destroyed by feminist culture.

Even people who aren't into metal and find it cheesy and over the top have to admit that it's more technical and requires higher levers of musicianship to play the the majority of modern music. Yngwie Malmsteen's music is pure cheese but all those hipster indie guitar players wouldn't be able to do the same things he can do on the guitar.

I was at a concert a few weeks ago and a local metal band started playing. The pit forms and some white girl with dreadlocks (wtf haha) is on the edge pushing people as they pass by. Somehow, she got thrown into the pit and they had to stop it so she could get out lol.
