I was hardcore back into metal back from when I was middle school up until like college...still really enjoy the music though my tastes have expanded quite a bit since then to include a lot of stuff I would have been embarrassed back to be caught listening to back in then. In high school I was known as the metal guy - walking around with my Slayer "South of Heaven" and Cannibal Corpse t-shirts and long hair. I can tell you that the metal scene is mostly a massive sausage fest and like any other male-dominated subculture, a good percentage of the few girls who are involved in it are there because they know just by virtue of being female they are going to stand out. A good example of this is all the girls claiming to be "nerds" and trying to attention whore in the video game scene these days.
The truth is that women generally don't develop interests in hobbies, skill sets, ideas in the same way men do. Men, when they become interested in music, sports, or hell even video games usually also develop a desire to MASTER it in some way - whether directly or indirectly. Mastering used in this context doesn't mean necessarily mean directly performing the activity they are interested in. For example, a guy who is really into sports but isn't athletic himself might instead just work on "mastering" sports in an indirect way such as memorizing statistics and plays. A guy who doesn't have musical talent himself and is incapable of directly mastering music might instead do something like memorizing the discography of his favorite band and learning about the trivia surrounding the recording of his favorite songs.
Women on the other hand, when they get involved in the scene that surrounds a particular band, a sports team, or whatever don't care about the actual band or team or whatever. What matters to them instead is the SOCIAL elements of the scene. A good example of this is sports, particularly with college football. Any time I see females in a crowd at some college football stadium I already know half of the girls in the crowd have no idea what's going on the in the game outside of the fact that the ball being closer to the other team's goal = good. For them, the enjoyment doesn't come from the game itself but from feeling like they are part of something and that they are bonding with other people. The fun for them is everyone wearing the same colors and cheering in unison with other people. A guy might watch a game by himself on a couch while drinking a beer if for some reason he can't go out with buddies to watch it. Can you imagine a girl doing the same? When a girl bangs the alpha male of a particular scene whether it be the quarterback of a football team or some local popular hipster guitar player she doesn't care about his actual accomplishments or skills. What actually turns her on is the man's status in the scene and how he is respected and exalted by other men.
Good 'ol Arthur Schopenhauer actually talks about this in his infamous "On Women" essay:
"This makes them incapable of taking a purely objective interest in anything, and the reason for it is, I fancy, as follows. A man strives to get direct mastery over things either by understanding them or by compulsion. But a woman is always and everywhere driven to indirect mastery, namely through a man; all her direct mastery being limited to him alone. Therefore it lies in woman’s nature to look upon everything only as a means for winning man, and her interest in anything else is always a simulated one, a mere roundabout way to gain her ends, consisting of coquetry and pretence."
I was about to reply but this post summed it all up.
While I've never grown my hair out long, there were a few years when I would hang out at my friends' completely fucked up apartment with beerstained carpets, videogames, bongs, and trash lying everywhere, and a table set up with CDs laying everywhere. I can't remember how many nights we spent drunk and/or stoned as fuck, or on mushrooms, blasting Metallica, Slayer, Death, Dream Theater, Ratt, Scorpions, Maiden, and every time we'd just nerd the fuck out on it. Start talking about compound time signatures or ascending diminished 7th patterns (half of us were music majors at the time).
Occasionally some girls would be over, and it was weird. They'd look at us as if we were zoo animals. 9 times out of 10 the girls would leave, never to come back. Over those few years, about 4 of them became regulars. They weren't very cute but they liked hanging out with us because we were weird, wasted, and destructive.
Some nights we'd be headbanging and air guitar to Metallica, other nights we'd try to figure out the deeper meaning to a Dream Theater album (Awake, anyone?)
It was a lot of fun, but bitches don't know shit about having fun.
