@speakeasy - So why aren't people shooting each other up in England on a mass scale? You can get guns illegally there too.

The cops were smart to think that his apartment might be booby trapped, it sounds like he rigged it up pretty good, and could have killed even more people had they not sent in the bomb technicians.

Thedude, the gun accessibility just gives these borderline cats the opportunity to wet multiple cats for no reason. I like Batman. Imagine I am there watching it with some friends and some sick fcuk comes and sprays the place. The gang bangers, it goes hand in hand regarding the goon game but for civvies, it seems unfair. Imagine you are in there with your innocent son or daughter and this deprived maggot starts lighting the place up..?
Everyone defaults to gun control arguments. You could make guns completely illegal tomorrow and that's not going to stop people from acquiring them anymore than you can stop people from getting illegal drugs. Think about that... Drugs have been illegal forever with harsh penalties yet I could get any drug I wanted within 15 minutes. Why would it be any different with guns?
I kind of agree with this, but I don't really think it's a fair comparison, because way more people use drugs and on a regular basis then people who want to buy and use guns. You only need so many guns, but a bag of weed or coke will run out fast before you need another one. Not to mention that drugs are addictive which creates a constant demand
Being a pragmatist it's easy to say that guns will always be available in the U.S. because there are already so many of them and such lax gun laws. However, in some countries where they've had tight regulation for years, guns are hard to come by, there is a long and well documented process to obtain one, and to obtain one illegally would require knowing the right people and exposing yourself to a criminal underworld, which most people will never come into contact with.

Moma, you are missing the point of the thread.
Taking away guns won't deal with the underlying issues that make these people do these type of things.
It would be easy to blame guns and gun control. It isn't like these people are magically changing when they get a gun. They are fucked up and something in our culture is making them fucked up.
I don't think enough people are interested in knowing why but would rather mask the problems with drug prescriptions, arguing about gun control or making other unreasonable assumptions.
We have always had guns. This type of behavior wasn't prevalent in the older days. As far as I understand that is. What has changed so much to make people go so crazy?

Man the comments on that Washington Post article are depressing. First one I read was blaming the NRA.
Why does the NRA get so much flak after this type of tragedy anyway?
Is an AR-15 even legal to own?

Yeah that's not as bad as the few nut jobs blaming Obama.

Population pressure, status frustration, laissez-faire attitude of the public, advertising that exacerbates existing feelings of shortcomings, increasing proportions of individuals with acquired or inherited dispositions to violence?
Some combination of the above, anyway. It's not that people are that different, but there's so many more things to push somebody over their own personal edge, and too many things that remove checks and balances on behaviour like this.

Yep, whenever i read news online, i remember why there's freedom of speech: nobody would pay to listen to what the commenters have to say. Makes me long for the days when print and TV ruled and the letters to the editor were chosen for clarity.
What is Obama's stance on guns anyway? I can't remember him ever commenting on shootings

Just as a background. I am an extremely pro-gun American who has been supporting the gun-rights cause for going on 20 years now (before I could even vote). Regarding the whole gun control issue, I have a couple of points.
First, the problem isn't the guns, it is the culture. We have a culture that worships the gunfighter. The archetypical American hero is the cowboy who settles his problems with his six-shooter. This is part of the reason why countries with high ownership (like Switzerland and Finland) don't have the problems we have with our firearms. Attempting to get rid of guns is not going to solve our cultural problem.
This problem is exacerbated IMHO by our twofold effort to glorify fantasy violence in movies (usually involving guns), while condemning and punishing HEALTHY EXPRESSIONS OF AGRESSION during childhood. This zero tolerance for fighting bullshit has created a huge swath of pussies in this country.
I am astounded by how many guys I have met who have never been in a fight. Not even when they were kids. This creates potential for individuals who don't know how to channel their anger. They take shit and take shit without knowing how to appropriately express anger, until the switch gets flipped. When that switch flips for some of these kids, they completely skip the fist-fight stage and go straight to spree killer stage.
Second, the gun genie is out of the bottle. No use trying to put it back in. There are 270 MILLION privately owned firearms in this country. How in the world could the government confiscate 270 million of anything?
Third, I guarantee you, ANY ATTEMPT to confiscate guns or enact strict gun control will spark levels of domestic terrorism that will make this theater shooting look like a pleasant memory. There are a bunch of complete fucking wackjobs out there that already think "Obama is going to take my guns". If he actually started doing that shit, well... you might want to invest in some body armor and avoid going to ANY government buildings for the next few years.
I am being dead serious guys. I first got interested with the Patriot/Militia movement back in the early '90s (around the time of the Clinton assault weapons ban). I have met these people, and they are some of the scariest mother fuckers you will ever encounter. They are our version of radical islamic fundamentalism, just with more conspiracy theories. These are 100% true believers.
Fourth, this is all a moot point because both political parties are scared shitless of the NRA and the gun lobby (as they should be). Even though the NRA is specifically targeting President Obama for defeat. If he actually started pushing stricter gun control, his campaign would be dead in the water, and he knows this.

Several points, in response to various comments above (in no particular order):
1. Game doesn't solve everything, but pussy would have prevented this killing, and many others. Pussy is the palliative ointment that soothes angry nerves. You'll never see a (true) player go on a mass killing spree. You have one have a BBL Meltdown, but not kill dozens.
2. How did this become a race thread?
3. A dude in a Batman suit saving the day would have been hilarious but, sadly, the type that would have a Batman suit in his closet is the same kind of guy who does this kind of shit.
4. I think this kind of thing happens in places like Colorado because of attitude toward guns more than the presence of guns themselves (they're somewhat correlated, I understand). That fiercely independent, Western, cowboy-ass spirit makes people think about guns early in the decision-making process that goes into solving your problems.

I'm surprised this stuff doesn't happen more often in America.
